Forty one days. He knew the number without checking, the way you know your own address.
And then it was zero again, and he was sitting on the back step at ten past five in the morning with the security light going off every time he stopped moving, watching the garden come up gray out of the dark. Not crying. Past that. Just sitting there with the arithmetic.
Because the arithmetic is the worst part, and nobody who has not done this understands that. It is not the thing itself. It is the reset. It is knowing that forty one days of quiet, hard, unglamorous holding on, days nobody applauded because nobody knew, have gone back to nothing on the counter, and that if anyone ever asks him how long, he has to say a number that makes the last six weeks sound like they never happened.
He had said it out loud last time. Actually said it, in the kitchen, with his hand flat on the worktop. That was the last time. He had meant it in a way he could feel in his chest. He had not been careless. He had not gone looking. He had just been tired on the wrong evening, in the wrong ten minutes, and the ten minutes had been waiting for him, patient as a lender.
And now he is on the step doing the thing he always does next, which is the closing argument against himself. The one he has had years to polish.
You know the argument. I know you do, because you are the one sitting on the step.
So before you finish delivering it, I want to interrupt you, once, and ask you something you have never been asked about this.
What exactly do you think you have been failing at?

Freedom was never a streak to maintain
I want to take the question seriously, because your answer to it is the whole problem.
You believe you have been failing to maintain something. A run. A streak. A record of clean days that you personally hold up, and every time it comes down, the collapse is read as evidence about you. So the count starts again, and the count carries the shame, and the shame is heavier this time than last time, and heavier again the time after that, because now it has history.
Here is the thing I have watched break people, and I am going to say it as a man who knows structures. What follows is not my assessment of you. It is what is written. The Spirit who breathed it has never once counted your days the way you have been counting them.
You have been living as though your freedom is a wall you are holding up with your arms.
Of course you fall. Everyone falls under that. It is not a moral result, it is arithmetic about arms and hours. Nobody in this world can hold a wall up with their arms indefinitely, and the fact that you managed forty one days is not the failure in this story, it is an astonishing amount of strength spent on the wrong job.
Freedom was never something you hold up. It is something that was granted, and it is meant to be holding you up.
Now, before I take you any further, let me name what this has actually cost, because I do not want to lift anything before you have been seen in the low place. The Spirit was on that step before I got here, and His word has never been embarrassed by an honest accounting of the damage.
It has cost you your own word. That is the deep one. You used to be somebody who meant what he said, and now there is a private list of promises you have broken to yourself, and you have stopped making new ones out loud because you cannot stand hearing your own voice make them.
It has cost you honesty with the people closest to you, not because you lie to them, but because there is a room in the house they are not allowed into, and you feel the door every time you sit down to dinner.
It has cost you church, or prayer, or whatever your version of drawing near is, because there is a rule in your head that says you go back when you are clean, and you have not been clean, so you have not gone back, and the loneliness of that has been feeding the very thing you are trying to leave.
And it has cost you hope, which is the most expensive item on the list. You do not really believe the next attempt is different, and you are so tired of hoping and then sitting on this step again. Hope is the one item the Holy Spirit refuses to write off, and John 8:36 was standing over that step before you sat down on it.
I am not going to tell you that you did not believe hard enough. That is a lie people tell the hurting so they do not have to sit on the step with them. Your freedom does not run on the strength of your believing. If it did, it would be one more wall for you to hold up with your arms, and I have already told you how that ends.
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.John 8:36
Look at who is doing the verb. Not you. The Son makes free. It is His work, His act, His authority, and the freedom that results is called free indeed, which is a phrase meaning real, actual, in fact, as opposed to nominal.
Which means freedom is not your performance record. It is your legal standing, granted by Someone with the authority to grant it, and your good days are evidence of it rather than the ground of it.
And I need you to hear that this is for you, personally, this morning, in the state you are actually in. Not for the version of you who gets it right first. Jesus never once required somebody to arrive clean before He would touch them. Not once. He was famous for it, and it scandalized the respectable people of His day so thoroughly that they wrote it down as a complaint, and the complaint is now one of the best pieces of news in the book. His Spirit is why it reads in the present tense at ten past five in the morning. It was written down and it has not been amended since.
He is not waiting at the end of a streak for you to prove yourself. He is on the step.
And think about Peter for a moment, because his worst night is in the book on purpose. He did not slip quietly. He denied he even knew the man, out loud, three times, to strangers, in a courtyard, after swearing in front of everybody that he never would. If ever a record was finished, that one was. And what Jesus does with him afterwards is not a lecture and not a probation period. It is breakfast on a beach and a job. The very thing Peter had disqualified himself from is handed back to him over a fire that someone else built and cooked on.
That is how this works. Not because the fall did not matter. Because the standing was never resting on him in the first place.
So here is what happens now, and it happens where you are, not after a better week.
You are going to stop counting. Not the practical part; keep whatever helps you, keep the meetings, keep the accountability, keep the person you telephone, keep the professional care if you have it, because those are good and God works through them. Stop counting in the way that decides your worth. Your worth was written elsewhere, and the Spirit who wrote it does not keep a second ledger.
The thing has had a name in your house for a long time, and it has mostly been spoken in your head, at night, in the voice that accuses. Today it gets said once, out loud, in daylight, in a flat voice, by you. Not to shame you. To move it from being your identity to being an object you can put down.
Then it gets renounced. Renounce simply means you publicly withdraw your agreement with it. You have been in agreement with it, quietly, for a long time. That agreement ends today.
You do not have to feel free to be free. Feelings will catch up in their own time and they take longer than we would like. What matters is who holds the standing, and it is not you, and it never was, and that is the best news on this page. The Holy Spirit does not wait for your feelings to sign anything off. The written word says the Son does the making, and the making was finished long before you sat down on that step.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, knowing you have said things like this before. Your track record is not what makes them true; being in Christ is, and He is the One who makes free. Speak to the voice that reminds you, believing and not doubting, and the outcome is His. You are not building the freedom by saying these. John 8:36 built it. What the Spirit of God does is carry the words further than the room you are sitting in.
- Broken promise, you are not my identity and you do not cancel His. The Word of God says if the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed, and my track record was never what made that true.
- Voice that says I have said this before, get out in the name of Jesus. He is the One who makes free, so the freedom has never depended on how many times I have tried it.
- Jesus, You make me free indeed, and You do the making. I stand on Your work today, because You have never once broken a promise back to me.
