Out of the Pit, Not Just Quieter in It

Nine forty. That is the hour, and he could not tell you when it became the hour, only that it did. The dishwasher is on. Upstairs has gone quiet. The last message has been answered. And from nine forty onward the evening belongs to the thing, and the thing has furniture now. A particular corner of the sofa with the shape of him worn into it. A particular mug. The lamp on the low setting, because the big light is honest and he does not want honest.

This is what nobody warns you about. Everyone warns you about the fall. Nobody warns you about the settling. He did not slide down there in one night. He arrived, and then over about four years he carried things down with him one at a time, the way a man furnishes a flat. A cushion for the corner. A rule about weekdays that makes the whole arrangement feel governed. A private vocabulary in which it is not a problem, it is a wind down, and a wind down is a reasonable thing for a tired man to have.

He has stopped saying last time. He used to say it, and mean it, which at least meant he was still pushing at the walls. Somewhere in the third year the saying stopped, and what replaced it was quieter and much worse. He made the pit liveable. He got the light right. And a pit with the light right does not feel like a pit. It feels like the only room in the house where nobody wants anything from him.

Which brings me to you, and to a sentence you may never have said even silently. You are not down there because you failed to climb out. You are down there because you got good at being down there. You know the hour. You know the chair. You have arranged the entire thing so that it costs the least and asks nothing, and the frightening part is no longer the pit. The frightening part is that you would miss it.

Four verbs, and most of us only ever ask for the first

David wrote a line about this that is usually read too fast.

He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.Psalm 40:2

Count the actions. Brought up. Out of the clay. Set my feet. Established my going. Four, and they are not four ways of saying one thing. They are a sequence, and almost everybody who prays about this only ever asks for the first one.

Start with the ground. The Hebrew calls it a pit of tumult, and then it names what is at the bottom of it: tit hayaven, mire, the kind of mud that behaves like a hand. That detail is the whole diagnosis. A pit with walls can be climbed and you would have tried. Mire does not need walls. Mire holds you by suction. There is nothing to push against, nothing to grip, and every honest effort you have made has come with that particular sound of a foot coming half out and going back in.

So hear this before anything else, because you have probably been carrying the opposite for years: the fact that you are still down there is not a measurement of how much you wanted out. People who wanted it desperately are down there. People who prayed with everything they had are down there. Whoever taught you that your continued presence in that corner is a verdict on your faith told you something that is not in this psalm and is not in the heart of God. Set it down. It was never yours to carry, and it is ours to carry, not yours. Psalm 40:2 puts four verbs in God's hands and not one of them in yours, and the Holy Spirit is already down in the mire beside you, at nine forty, in the corner of the sofa with your shape worn into it.

Now let me say the part that is harder to hear and gentler than it sounds.

The settling is real, and you know it better than I could describe it. Somewhere between the fighting and now, the thing stopped being an enemy and became a comfort, and comfort is a much harder thing to be freed from than pain. Pain motivates. Comfort negotiates. Comfort is why the prayer you actually pray, in the quiet, when you are being fully honest, is not take it from me. It is closer to make me feel less awful about it. That is a prayer for a better lamp. And God, being kind, is not going to answer a prayer for a better lamp. His Spirit is not in the business of improving the lighting. What is written is that He brought a man up and out, and out is what is being held open to you tonight, not a softer corner and a kinder bulb.

Look at the psalm again. He does not tidy the pit. He does not improve it, ventilate it, or make it more bearable. He takes the man out of it entirely, and then, because being lifted out of mud does not by itself give a person the ability to walk, He puts the feet on rock and steadies the going.

That last verb matters enormously to you. Established my goings is about the ordinary walking that comes afterward. The Tuesday. The nine forty that arrives anyway, because nine forty is coming tonight and it is coming tomorrow. God is not only interested in the moment of extraction. He furnishes the walking. He builds the new evening. He is as concerned with what you do at nine forty next week as He is with tonight, and He does not consider that the boring part.

And yes, He still does this. Now. In this decade, for people with jobs and school runs and a corner of the sofa. This is not a story about somebody else's ancestor. Freedom is being handed out today, in ordinary houses, at ordinary hours, and there is one being handed to you.

I want to say something about the first line of that psalm as well, because you may have been using it against yourself. David begins by saying he waited patiently for the LORD. In the Hebrew it is a doubled verb, waiting upon waiting, the sort of phrase you only reach for when the waiting has gone on long enough to become its own subject. He is not describing a quick answer. He is describing a stretch of time that had begun to feel like being ignored, and he writes about it from the far side, on the rock, with his feet under him.

Which means the years in the corner are not disqualifying. They are the part of the account that comes before the verbs. If you have been down there four years, or fourteen, that changes nothing about what God does next, because nothing in this psalm is priced by how long the mud held. That is His word over your four years or your fourteen, and the Spirit who kept David writing from the far side of that wait is the same Spirit sitting with you on this side of it, at nine forty, with the dishwasher going.

And one more honest word. If the thing that has a hold on you has your body involved, if stopping suddenly would be dangerous, or if there is a doctor or a counselor already walking this with you, keep every one of those appointments. God works through hands He has placed in your town on purpose. Freedom and good care have never once been rivals.
