Breaking Free1 Corinthians 6:12

The Door You Keep Walking Back Through

This message is for the person you keep going back to who costs you everything each time

Eleven fourteen at night, and the truck is idling on the gravel with the heater on, and Ray has been sitting in it for nine minutes without moving.

The porch light is on up at the house. It is always on. That is part of it. There is a light on for him whenever he comes, and it has taken him four years to work out that a light being on is not the same as being wanted, and knowing that has changed absolutely nothing about the nine minutes.

His phone is face down on the passenger seat. He knows what the message says. He has read it eleven times. It is three sentences long and every one of them is exactly engineered, though he would never use that word, because using that word would mean admitting what he already knows.

Last time he lost a job over this. The time before that he lost most of a friendship, because Dan finally said the plain thing at the kitchen table and Ray could not hear it and has not called him since. There has been money gone that he cannot account for. There is a whole year in there he could not describe to you if you asked.

And here is the part nobody tells you about a door like this. It is not that he does not know. He knows. He could give you the entire diagnosis of his own situation in about four minutes, in accurate language, with dates.

Knowing has never once been the difficulty.

The difficulty is that at eleven fourteen at night, with the heater going and the gravel under the wheels, the pull is not an idea. It is weather. It comes up through the floor of him and there is no argument in his head large enough to stand in front of it.

He puts his hand on the gearstick. He takes it off again.

And you can stop pretending this is a story about Ray now, because you have sat in that car.

Maybe yours is a phone number and not a driveway. Maybe it is a person who was never cruel once, not once, and still costs you every single time. Maybe it is somebody you love and would defend to anyone. You know the weather. You know the nine minutes. You know the small sick certainty of watching yourself do the thing again while some quiet part of you stands off to one side saying oh, we are doing this.

And afterwards you are the one who has to live in the wreckage, and pay for it, and explain it to nobody, because there is nobody left you have not already used up explaining it to.

The Door You Keep Walking Back Through

Freedom is not a reward for letting go properly

Let me get one thing out of the way, because I suspect it is doing more damage than the door is.

Nobody is going to tell you here that your grip is the problem. Not me, and not this message, and not the God who is in that truck with you at eleven fourteen. The idea that if you had just held on a little less tightly, wanted a little less, been a little less weak in the chest, then you would be out by now, is a cruelty dressed as advice, and it has never freed one single person in the history of the world. It only ever adds a second weight to somebody already carrying the first one.

Here is the pit, said honestly. You are not stuck because you are ignorant, and you are not stuck because you are bad. You are stuck because something got its hands on the part of you that decides, and it is very strong, and it is stronger at eleven at night than it is at two in the afternoon, and you have been trying to out-think weather.

Now hear what the Word actually puts in your hands. It was written down centuries before there were trucks or gravel or phones lying face down on a passenger seat, and the Holy Spirit is why it arrives in the cab with the heater going instead of staying back there with the ink.

All things are permitted for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are permitted for me, but I will not be brought under the power of anything.1 Corinthians 6:12

Read that second half slowly, because it is the sentence, and almost nobody notices what kind of sentence it is.

It is not an instruction. It is not you must not be brought under the power of anything, delivered from above by somebody with folded arms. It is a man standing up and saying what is true of him now. Paul is not straining. He is describing.

Freedom, in this passage, is not a prize handed out at the end for good performance. It is the standing condition of a person Christ has already bought and already opened. The door is not locked. It has not been locked for a long time. What has happened is that the weather comes up at eleven fourteen and you cannot see the door in the dark.

So this is not a message about trying harder at the handle. It is a message about the light coming on in the hallway.

The breakthrough

Here is what I want you to see, sitting there with the engine running.

You have been waiting to feel free before you act free, and that order does not exist anywhere in Scripture and it has never worked for anybody. Nobody in the whole Book gets a feeling first. They get a word, and then they move, and the feeling arrives somewhere down the road, usually late, usually smaller than they hoped, and completely real.

Christ did not buy you a discount on the door. He bought the whole of you, outright, and nothing gets to hold what He has already paid for. Not that number. Not that house. Not the weather at eleven fourteen. It is permitted to shout. It is not permitted to own, and it does not own, and it has not owned since the day He said finished. Paul was not straining toward any of that when he set down 1 Corinthians 6:12. He was reporting it. And the Spirit of God is in the truck tonight, turning that report into one about you and not only about him.

You are not building freedom tonight. You are standing in it, in the dark, waiting for your eyes to adjust.

And if you went back last week, or last night, that has not undone anything. There is no counter. The door was never re-locked while you were not looking. It is open now, this minute, in exactly the way it was open before. Nowhere in the written word is there a tally of the nights you turned in at that gate, and the Spirit did not get out of the truck on a single one of them.

Declare this over yourself

Say them in the car with the engine running, before you decide which way the gravel goes. In Christ you have standing to refuse to be brought under the power of anything. Speak to the pattern and never to the person, bless them and command the pull, and leave the outcome to Him. The ground under the words is 1 Corinthians 6:12 and not your volume, and the Holy Spirit is the breath in them.

  1. Door I keep walking back through, you have no power over me. The Word of God says all things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
  2. Pattern of going back, get out in the name of Jesus. A thing that costs me everything each time is not a choice I am making freely, and I refuse to be brought under its power.
  3. Lord, You are Lord over my going out and my coming in. I choose the door You opened, and I stop paying rent at the one that costs me everything.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
