Breaking FreePsalm 139:7

Where You Go When It Gets Heavy

This message is for the three days you disappear for whenever life gets heavy

The thing lands on a Thursday. It is nearly always a Thursday.

A sentence in a phone call. A letter with a window in the envelope. A face at the other end of a kitchen doing something he has seen it do before. Whatever it is, he feels it go in, and he keeps talking, and he finishes the day, and he is entirely fine right up until about four in the afternoon on Friday.

Then he goes.

He does not decide to. That is the part nobody understands about it. There is no moment where a man sits down, weighs his options and chooses to disappear. There is a Thursday, and then there is a Friday, and somewhere in between his hands start doing things they have done before. The phone goes into the glovebox wrapped in a fleece, because switched off in his pocket is not far enough away. He tells one person one thing and another person something slightly different, and the two things will not survive being put side by side, and he already knows that, and he says them anyway.

And then a room. It has been different rooms over the years. The one above the shop, when he was younger. A friend's flat, twice. Lately a rented room with a kettle, two sachets in a saucer, a radiator that does not work and a curtain that does not quite meet in the middle.

The gap in the curtain is the thing he remembers about all of them, actually. On day three you can watch the light from that gap move all the way across the wall, and it takes about four hours, and you will not believe how fast four hours can go when you are watching a line of light cross a wall.

Day one is relief so strong it feels holy. Nothing can reach him. Day two is nothing at all. Day three the shame arrives, right on time, and it brings the arithmetic with it. What day it is. How many messages. Who has been ringing. What he is going to say when he walks back in, and which version he told to whom, and how tired he is of being a man who has to remember which version he told to whom.

At some point on the third evening he puts his shoes on. He always does. He always goes back.

You know that room.

Yours might not have a kettle in it. Yours might be a car at the far end of a car park, or the spare room with the door shut, or a screen at three in the morning, or a house you go to where nobody asks you anything. But you know the shape of it exactly, and you know the difference between day one and day three, and you know the walk back in.

And you have carried this for years without ever once saying it out loud to a living soul, because the moment you say it out loud you become a man who disappears, and right now you are only a man who has been very busy, or unwell, or away.

Where You Go When It Gets Heavy

The room is not off his map

Before anything else, I want to say the thing you have been braced against.

I am not here to tell you that if you had held on tighter you would not have gone. I have no interest in that sentence, and I do not believe it. Nobody ever got free because someone told them their grip was the problem. You did not go because you are weak. You went because at some point in your life going was the only door in the room, and it worked, and a thing that works gets kept. That is not a soft reading of you, it is the written one. Nowhere in Scripture is His nearness priced as a reward for stamina, and the Spirit who met David in the middle of his worst night is not squeamish about a man with his phone wrapped in a fleece.

So let us leave your character out of this entirely and talk about where God is standing.

David wrote a song about this and it is the strangest, most searching song in the book. He turns it over and over: you know when I sit down and when I stand up, you know the word on my tongue before it gets there. And then he asks the question that everybody who has ever disappeared has asked, and he asks it in the middle of the night, and he does not soften it.

Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?Psalm 139:7

He answers himself, and the answer is a list of every extreme he can think of. Up to the heavens, and God is there. Down to the depths, and God is there. The wings of the morning, the far side of the sea, and God is already there with a hand out. And then the one that matters most for you: if I say, surely the darkness will cover me, even the night is not dark to him.

Notice what the song does not do. It does not treat this as a threat. That is a modern ear reading it wrong. David is not saying there is nowhere to hide from the inspection. He is saying there is nowhere I can get to that is emptier than his company. The whole song is a man discovering, with something like astonishment, that he has never once been anywhere alone.

So take that into your room.

Day three. Curtain not quite meeting. Light crossing the wall. Kettle gone cold. God was in that room. Not standing in the doorway with his arms folded, waiting for you to be finished so the conversation could resume. In it. On the third afternoon, in the worst hour, when you had told two people two different things and the shame was doing its arithmetic.

He did not need you to come back to church to find you. He was never looking for you. He was sitting with you. You are not somebody God has to be talked into approaching. Psalm 139:7 went looking for one place a man could flee from His Spirit and came back with no address at all, and a rented room with two sachets in a saucer was never the gap in that list.

And if what happens in those three days is putting your body at risk, please tell one real person today, out loud, and let them stay near you. If it ever goes further than that, if you find yourself thinking you might not come back at all, call or text 988 in the United States, or your local emergency number wherever you are, tonight. That is not weakness and it is not a lack of faith. It is exactly how God has always sent help, through people who show up.

The breakthrough

Freedom here does not look like never going again. I want to be careful with you, because if I make that the finish line you will fail it within a month and add it to the pile.

Freedom starts as something much quieter, and it starts today, and it is this: you are not alone in that room, and you never have been. That is not encouragement. It is the plain sense of Psalm 139 and there is no way round it, and His Spirit is what carries an old song as far as a curtain that does not quite meet in the middle.

The going has had its power because it was secret. That is the whole engine. Every hour of every one of those three days has run on the belief that this is the part of your life nobody sees, not your family, not your friends, and least of all God. And that belief is simply not true. It was never true. The room has been full the entire time.

So the first thing that breaks is not the pattern. It is the secrecy. You bring the room into the light by saying it, once, to God who was already there, and then, when you can, to one human being who will not flinch.

You are not a man who has to be retrieved. You are not a project anybody is disappointed to be assigned. You are somebody God has been sitting with in the dark, and the light through the curtain gap has never been the only light in that room. That is not my opinion of you. It is written, and the Spirit of God is why it lands on the fleece wrapped round a phone in a glovebox instead of remaining a fine sentence about somebody else.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud before the phone goes off, while people can still reach you. In Christ there is no address you can take that puts you outside Him, and that standing is what makes disappearing pointless rather than shameful. Speak to the instinct, and however He answers, Psalm 139:7 already went hunting for a place outside His Spirit and came home with nothing, so He is in the room you were going to before you get there.

  1. Three days of disappearing, you are not a hiding place. The Word of God asks whither shall I go from Thy Spirit, or whither shall I flee from Thy presence, and the answer is nowhere.
  2. Instinct to vanish, get out in the name of Jesus. If I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there, so there is no address I can take that God has not already got.
  3. Lord, You are where I go, even when I go to the wrong place. I stop disappearing, because Your hand leads me and Your right hand holds me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
