Eleven fifty two, and the only light in the kitchen is the one inside the fridge, because she opened it four minutes ago and never took anything out.
She is on the floor. Not sitting at the table like a person, on the tile with her back against the dishwasher and her knees up, because the floor is where you end up when you meant to get a glass of water and then your thumb started moving.
She has been at it eleven minutes. She knows because the phone told her, in that gentle way it has, as though it were on her side.
And here is the thing she cannot say to anybody: she is not jealous of strangers. She scrolls past strangers like weather. It is the four people she loves most in the world who are taking her apart tonight. The friend from university with the key in her hand outside a front door with a red gate. The girl she led to Jesus at eighteen, now speaking somewhere with a lanyard on. Her cousin, three years younger, with the ultrasound picture and the caption that just says finally. And her oldest friend, who did nothing at all except post a photograph of a Tuesday dinner that looked like a life.
She is happy for them. That is the part nobody believes. She typed a real message to her cousin with real exclamation marks in it and meant every one, and then she put the phone face down on the tile and cried without making any noise, which is a skill she did not have two years ago.
Because somewhere in those eleven minutes, without ever deciding to, she totted up the score. Twenty nine. No red gate. No lanyard. No ultrasound. Same job, same flat, same Tuesday.
She picks the phone up again. Puts it down. The fridge hums.
And now I am going to stop calling her she.
Because you know that floor. You know the exact four people, and you know that the awful part is not envy of enemies, it is loving somebody and losing to them in the same breath, and you know you would never say one word of this out loud because it would sound so small and so ugly and you are supposed to be past this by now.
Do not get up yet. Stay there a minute. I have something to tell you and it is not a pep talk.

Nobody entered you in it. Somebody named you.
Let me be honest about what that floor actually costs, because a person who skips it has not earned the right to say anything after it.
It costs you your own good news. That is the cruellest bit. You had a decent week. Something went right on Wednesday and you were quietly pleased about it, and then eleven minutes with a screen and Wednesday is gone, not disproved, just made small, the way a candle is made small by a floodlight. Nothing was taken from you. It was reclassified.
And it costs you people. Not on the outside, on the inside. You still turn up, you still send the message, and something in you has started keeping a private ledger against people you would take a bullet for, and you hate that ledger, and it will not close. It was never yours to close. Galatians 6:4 takes the neighbor out of the measurement altogether, and it is the Spirit, not your willpower at midnight, who reaches down to where that ledger actually lives.
Now watch what Paul does with all of this. He does not tell you to try harder at being content. He does something much stranger. He removes the other person from the instrument.
But let each one test his own work, and then his reason for boasting will be in himself alone and not in his neighbour.Galatians 6:4
Read what is missing. There is no comparison in that sentence. Not a favourable one, not an unfavourable one, none. Paul does not say, measure yourself against your neighbor and you will find you are doing fine. He says the neighbor is not a unit of measurement and never was.
Which means the score you tallied on that floor tonight was not a bad result. It was not a result at all. It was a sum from an exam that was never set, marked by a scheme that does not exist, in a race that has no entry list, because there is no race, and there is no lane, and there is no finishing order between you and the girl with the red gate. You have been quietly losing something that is not happening. The word never set that exam, and the Spirit does not read your life off a scoreboard He never printed.
But I am not going to try to argue you off that floor, because the ledger is not in your head. It is lower down than that, and arguments do not reach it.
So let me not make a case. Let me just tell you about a man under a tree.
Nathanael was nobody's headline. He was sitting under a fig tree in the middle of an ordinary afternoon, doing whatever a man does under a tree, seen by no one and posting nothing. His friend came running and said, we have found Him, and Nathanael, who was not in a good mood, said the thing everyone quotes, can anything good come out of Nazareth.
Then he walked up. And before he could say a single word about himself, before any case was made, Jesus looked at him and said, there is a man with nothing false in him.
Nathanael said, how do you know me?
And Jesus said this. Before your friend ever called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.
That is the whole thing. That is what breaks a man in one sentence. Not an argument, not a compliment, not a rebuttal of his sarcasm. Jesus told him where he had been sitting when nobody was looking. John 1:48 has it in writing, and the Spirit is why it is not only Nathanael's afternoon being described there.
He saw you on the tile. He was not scrolling past you. He knows about the fridge light and the eleven minutes and the message you typed to your cousin that you actually meant, and He is not comparing that to anybody. He has never once put your name beside another name to work out where you stand.
You do not have a low position in the ranking. You are not in a ranking. You are known, and that is John 1 rather than my kindness to you, and it is by His Spirit that I saw you lands on a kitchen tile at eleven fifty two instead of staying under a tree in Galilee.
So you are not going to win this tonight. You are going to withdraw.
Not from your friends. From the contest. Because the contest is the invention, and it has had you on a kitchen floor at midnight scoring your own life against people you love, and it does not get one more evening of you. That withdrawal is not you conceding ground. It is Galatians 6 taken at its word, and the Spirit is already loosening a grip your arguments never got near.
There is nothing to prove here and no ground to take back. The One who made you looked at a man under a tree and named the thing that was true about him before that man opened his mouth, and He has been doing exactly that with you your whole life, in every room where nobody was watching. That is not an argument I want you to accept. It is a fact I want you to notice you are already standing inside, written down in John 1 long before tonight and brought the whole way here by His Spirit.
You are not behind. You were never in the line.
Declare this over yourself
Say them with the phone face down, out loud, in your own voice, which is the one voice all that scrolling never let you hear. You are in Christ, and that is the standing these words rest on rather than any comparison you could win. Galatians 6:4 is underneath all three lines and your voice is only carrying them, and it takes the Spirit, not volume, to make three sentences do anything on a kitchen floor at midnight. Speak to the mountain, believing and not doubting, and the outcome is His, who measured your course Himself.
- Comparison, you are a race I was never entered in. The Word of God says let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone and not in another.
- Phone, you do not get to hand out my worth, and I say so in the name of Jesus. Every scroll is somebody else's finish line, and I am running a course God measured for me.
- Lord, You gave me my own work and my own joy in it. I run my race today, and I thank You that You have never once graded me on a curve.
