The Mirror Has Been Lying

The photographs came through nine days after the wedding, four hundred and something of them, and everyone in the family group chat was delighted. Somebody said her sister looked radiant. Somebody said the light in the marquee was perfect.

She opened them on her own, at night, with the lamp off so the screen was the only thing in the room. And she was fast. That is the detail I want you to hold on to. She did not study them. She did not weigh anything up. In the time it took each picture to load she had already reached a verdict on her own face, and it was the same verdict every time, delivered before she had finished seeing the image. Her arm. Her chin from that side. The way she was standing. The expression she apparently makes without knowing.

She deleted eleven of them off her own phone. Then she went back into the chat and typed something warm about her sister, and meant every word of it, and it cost her nothing at all to be generous about somebody else's face.

Nobody in her family has any idea this happens. She has never once said it out loud. If you asked her she would laugh and say she is just not photogenic, and the laugh would be real, and underneath it there would be a thing she has believed about herself since she was about eleven years old.

I want to talk to you about the speed of it.

Because whatever you think about your own face, you did not arrive at it this evening in front of the glass. Something that fast is not a judgement. It is a setting. And somebody set it.

Somebody set that instrument, and it was not you

On a build there is a thing that will ruin you quietly, and it is not bad workmanship. It is a good instrument that has been knocked out of true.

If your level is off by a fraction, everything you build with it comes out wrong, and here is the cruel part: every single wall will read as plumb. The instrument will confirm you at every stage. You will not find the fault by working harder or measuring more often. You will find it only when something else, something you did not calibrate, is laid against the same wall.

You have been reading yourself off an instrument that was knocked out of true a long time ago, and it has been confirming its own answer ever since. That is not something you have to confess to me. His Spirit has known the level was out since the day it was knocked, and He has held a written reading of His own the whole time.

I am not going to guess who did it, because I do not know and I will not invent it. But I know how it usually goes. It is rarely one dramatic event. It is a remark from an adult who thought you were out of the room. It is being the one who was compared. It is a stretch of years where affection had to be earned by performance, so that being loved and being useful fused into one thing in your head and have never fully come apart since. It is a hundred small readings taken with a bad level, until the reading stopped feeling like a reading and started feeling like simple fact.

And I know what it has done to you, because it does the same thing to everyone it gets.

It has made you brilliant at being generous to other people and unable to accept a compliment without deflecting it inside two seconds. It has you leaving photographs. Not appearing in them, leaving them, so there is no record. It has you apologizing for existing in small ways all day long, for taking up a seat, for asking a question, for being an interruption. It has you assuming that anyone who likes you has been given incomplete information. And on the days when God feels near to somebody else, it has you standing at the back of your own life, quietly certain that He helps people, and privately unconvinced He would go to the trouble for you.

I am not going to argue you out of that. Nobody has ever been argued into knowing they are loved, and if arguing worked you would have been free years ago, because you have heard every good sentence there is.

So instead, let me lay something else against the wall. It is not my sentence and it is not another good line. It is written. His Spirit is holding the other end of the tape.

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.Psalm 139:14

Fearfully and wonderfully. Not adequately. Not acceptably, on a good week, with effort.

And read the verses around it sometime, because the psalm does not stop there. It says the frame of you was not hidden from Him while you were being made in secret. It says His eyes saw your substance before it was finished, and that the days written down for you were written before there was one of them. Which means the appraisal on file was filed before you had done a single thing, good or bad, that anyone could have graded you on. His Spirit did not take that reading in hindsight.

That is the reading that was taken with an instrument that has never been out of true.

And now the thing that costs the most to receive, so I am going to say it slowly. That was not written about people. It was written about a person. The psalm is in the first person singular the whole way through. Me. My frame. My days. Not a species being praised in general terms while you stand outside the group photograph again.

He is not fond of humanity and vague about you. He knows the exact face you cannot look at kindly, and He has never once looked at it the way you look at it. You are known by name and by frame, not by category. Psalm 139 is written in the singular from its first line to its last. His Spirit does not read it over you in the plural.

And I will tell you where that becomes unarguable. It is not in a compliment. It is at a cross. Whatever value you have quietly assigned yourself, and I think you assigned it low and assigned it early, God settled the matter in public without consulting your figure at all. He gave His own Son for the one you cannot look at kindly.

Nobody goes that far for something they were unimpressed by.

That is the second reading, and it was taken by an instrument that has never been knocked, never been dropped, and never once needed adjusting.
