Seen in a Room Where Nobody Knows You

The urn has a little red light on it and she has been looking at that light for a while now, because looking at it is a thing to do with her eyes.

Half eleven on a Sunday. The chairs are going up in stacks of eight at the far end, and somebody has put on the good playlist, and the hall smells of hot water and biscuits. There are nine conversations happening. She counted. Every one of them started before she got to the tea table, the way conversations always seem to have done, and every one of them has that shape a group makes with its shoulders that is not unkindness and is not an invitation either.

She has a polystyrene cup in her hand that she does not want. She is drinking it slowly because an empty cup means leaving, and leaving at twenty to twelve looks like something, and she cannot decide what.

So she goes to the noticeboard.

She reads the poster about the walking group. She reads the rota with the names in biro down the side, all of them written by somebody who knew how to spell them. She reads the poster about the walking group again, and this is the third week she has read that poster, and she could tell you the dates on it in her sleep.

Eleven weeks. That is how long she has been coming. She has a sentence prepared for the tea table, a small ordinary one about the weather or the parking, and it has been in her pocket for eleven weeks, and there has not yet been a gap in the air big enough to put it in.

And I am going to stop saying she now.

Because you know the noticeboard. You know the wall you go and stand at when standing in the middle of the room has become unbearable. You know how it feels to be perfectly welcome and entirely unknown at the same time, which is a specific loneliness and one of the loneliest there is, because there is nothing to complain about. Nobody has been rude to you. Everybody smiled. They just did not learn your name, and you have stopped offering it, because offering it and watching it not land is worse than not offering it.

And here is the part you have not said to anybody. Somewhere in the last few weeks a quiet suspicion moved in and made itself comfortable, and it goes like this: perhaps I am not the kind of person a room learns.

You put the cup in the bin on your way out. Nobody sees you go, which is the same as nobody having seen you arrive.

Somebody in this story finally uses her name

I am not going to make a case for you. That is what people usually do here, and it never works, because the moment your worth becomes an argument you are already standing in the dock. You do not need a better case. You need to be seen, and I want to show you the place in Scripture where that actually happens, to a woman in a worse room than yours. It is not an illustration I went looking for. His Spirit is why a desert story still finds people standing at noticeboards on a Sunday morning.

Her name was Hagar. She was a foreign servant in a household that was not hers, in a country that was not hers, and she had just run away into open desert while pregnant, which tells you exactly how bearable the house had become.

Now watch the names in that story, because this is the thing I want you to see and I have never been able to unsee it.

The mistress of the house talks about her and calls her my servant. The master of the house talks about her and calls her your servant. Everybody in the story refers to her by her function and her position and her usefulness, over and over, and not one of them says her name out loud. She is the girl. She is the help. She is the arrangement.

Then she is out by a spring in the wilderness with nothing, and a voice says: Hagar.

Her name. First word. Before anything else. And then a question, which is the second thing nobody had given her in years: where have you come from, and where are you going.

She had not been asked anything in a long time. She had been discussed.

And here is what she does with it, and she is the one who does it, this runaway servant girl nobody was out looking for:

And she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "You are the God who sees me." For she said, "Have I also truly seen here the One who sees me?"Genesis 16:13

She gives God a name. Sitting in the dust by a spring on the road to nowhere, a woman whose own name nobody in the house had bothered to say, turns round and names Him, and the name she chooses is the God who sees me. Nobody coached her into it. The Spirit of God was out in that wilderness before the voice was, and He is the reason a servant girl had any words for Him at all.

Not the God who is powerful. Not the God who is holy, although He is. She had no shortage of things she could have called Him and she picked the one thing she had been starving for.

And then the strangest, tenderest detail in the whole passage. They named the well after it. A place on the map, a real spring with real water that other people would water animals at for generations, got named for a moment when nobody else was present. Somebody wrote that well onto the map, and the map said, in effect: this is where the unseen one was seen.

Nobody argued Hagar into feeling valuable. Nobody gave her a speech about how she mattered. He said her name, He asked her a real question, and He let her go on being seen until she could feel it.

That is what is happening to you at the noticeboard.

He is not scanning the room and eventually landing on you. He was looking at you before you found a parking space. He has never once had to ask anybody who you were. And He is not waiting to see whether the room learns your name before He decides how much you are worth, because He has never used their method of finding out. None of that is my encouragement to offer. Genesis 16:13 put it on record beside a spring, and His Spirit has been holding it over you since well before the parking space.
