The bag stayed packed for two years.
It lived under the bed in the small room at the back, and everything he owned was in it, folded, ready, zipped. He had a chest of drawers. He never used the chest of drawers. He took out what he needed each morning and put it back each night, and he did it quietly, and the family never knew.
He was a good boy in that house. Extraordinarily good. He washed his plate before anyone asked. He said thank you at a volume you could hear from the hallway, and he said it for things nobody thanks anybody for, like being passed the salt, like being told good morning. He asked before he took water. He read the room the way other people read weather warnings, and when the adults were tired or short with each other he made himself small and useful and pleasant until the air changed. He got a certificate at school and brought it home fast, and the woman who had signed the papers put it on the fridge, and he watched her face while she did it, checking.
Because that was the arrangement, as he understood it. He was allowed to be there as long as he was worth having there. Nobody had ever said that to him. Nobody in that house believed it for a second. It was simply the shape his heart had learned in the years before, and hearts keep their shape long after the room changes.
And one Saturday she was hunting for a lost shoe and found the bag, and she sat down on the floor of the small room with her back against the bed and she did not unpack it and she did not tell him off. When he came in, she said one thing. She said, you can keep that packed as long as you need to. It does not change anything. You are not a guest here, and I am not going to stop being your family while you decide whether to believe me.
You have a bag under your bed.

The house is not on approval
I know how you live in the house of God, because I have watched a hundred people live in it the same way, and I recognize every one of the tells.
You pray better after a good week. You go quiet after a bad one, not because you are angry with Him, but because you feel like you should give it a few days before you show your face. You thank Him constantly and specifically, which sounds like gratitude and is actually a receipt. You are careful, always careful, never quite at ease. You have a running total in your head that nobody else can see, and the total tells you how welcome you currently are. And when someone in a service says that God delights in you, something in you takes half a step back and says, yes, in general. In principle. For people.
Here is the thing about a certificate on a fridge. The boy in that story was not wrong that the certificate was welcome. He was wrong about what it was for. He thought it was rent. Nothing written anywhere in Scripture charges rent on a son, and the Spirit did not take you in on a tenancy.
So let me tell you where your life is actually kept.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3
Sit with the word hidden. It is not a word about being invisible. It is a word about being stored somewhere on purpose, out of the reach of anything that might get at it. Paul is saying that the deepest fact about you is not held in your performance, or your consistency, or your streak, or your feelings on a Tuesday afternoon. It is held in Christ, and it is held in God, two layers deep, in a place your worst week cannot open and your best week did not earn.
Which means the running total in your head is not the ledger. It never has been. You have been auditing an account that has nothing to do with your standing, and calling the result your identity. Colossians 3:3 filed the real one two layers deep, countersigned by the Spirit, and nothing in your week has the key to that drawer.
Now, something in you has already begun drafting the exception, and it is drafting it very politely. Yes, but that is written to the church. That is for people who are further in than I am. That is general, and I am specific, and if you knew the specifics you would understand why I keep the bag packed.
I am not going to argue you out of that, because nobody has ever been argued into feeling at home. I am going to do something else. I am going to show you the older brother.
At the end of the story of the son who ran, there is a second son standing outside a party in the dark, refusing to come in, and he says a sentence that gives him away completely. He tells his father he has served him all these years and never disobeyed, and never once got a young goat to celebrate with his friends. Serving. Never disobeying. Earning a small allowance of joy. He is describing employment, and he is standing in his own father's yard while he does it.
And his father comes out to him, in front of the guests, and says: son, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
Always. Not on review. Not conditional on the year he has had. That older brother had lived like staff in a house he already owned, and the whole time, every field he crossed with his head down had his name on it. Luke 15:31 is where that sentence is written, and the Spirit says it over you in the same tense, standing in the same yard.
Read that again as a description of your last four years, because that is what it is.
And now I want to say the hard part plainly, because it has been carried alone and it deserves to be said out loud by somebody else.
Living like a guest is exhausting in a way that never shows up on the outside. You are always slightly on. You cannot fully rest in a room you might be asked to leave, so you never rest anywhere, and it has been years, and the tiredness has gone so deep you have stopped calling it tiredness and started calling it your personality. You are the one who volunteers. You are the one who is easy to have around. You are the one who apologizes for taking up an evening, for asking a question twice, for existing on a day when other people are stressed. And under all of it there is a small, patient dread that one day the arrangement gets reviewed and the answer comes back no.
Hear me. Nobody is reviewing it. There is no meeting. There is no file with your name on it and a column marked recent conduct. You have been auditioning for a part that was written for you before the world began, and the tiredness you feel is not the cost of following Jesus. It is the cost of a belief about Him that was never true. Colossians 3:3 was written to end exactly that belief, and the Spirit did not come into you as an inspector. He came in as the proof of the address.
So here, tonight, we are going to change the arrangement, and it is not going to take a probation period, because you were never on one.
You are not a guest of God who has been given an unusually long stay. You are His. That was settled at the cross, before you were impressive, before you were useful, before you had one single thing on the fridge. Scripture says you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but the Spirit of adoption, by which you cry out, Father. Adoption is not a mood. It is a legal act that changes an address permanently and gives a name that cannot be handed back, and it is done, and it is yours, now.
So unpack. Take the folded things out and put them in the drawers. Stop reading the weather in the house. Stop keeping a receipt. You are allowed to leave your things out, and take up room, and come in loudly on a bad day, and sit down in the good chair without checking anyone's face first.
You live here. You have lived here the whole time. Colossians 3:3 says where your life is kept. That back room was kept for you by the Spirit every one of the two years the bag stayed zipped.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in the middle of the room rather than near the door, out loud, without checking whether you earned the week. In Christ your life is hidden with Him in God, and that address is the standing you speak from. The lines are not mine to grant and they were never yours to qualify for: Colossians 3:3 holds them, and the Spirit is standing in the middle of the room with you, not over by the door. Say unto this mountain, remove hence, and leave the outcome to Him.
- Good behavior, you are not my visa. The Word of God says ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God, and a life hidden there is not a guest pass.
- Feeling of only visiting, get out in the name of Jesus. Hidden with Christ in God is an address, and I live at it whether or not I have been impressive this week.
- Lord, my life is hidden in You and You are not letting go. I come home today, because home is where I already am.
