He says it in the car.
Out loud, to nobody, both hands still on the wheel, in a car park he had not planned on being in tonight. And the sentence is: that was the last time.
He means it. That is the part outsiders never understand about him. He is not lying to himself in that car. In that moment he is the most sincere man in the county, and if you could bottle the sincerity coming off him you could run a small town on it. He means it the way you mean things at the bottom.
He has said it before. He could tell you roughly how many times, if you caught him at the right hour and asked kindly. There is a note on his phone titled Day 1. He has not made a second note. He edits that one. The original date is long gone, written over so many times that the note is less a record than a small, private archaeology.
And here is the shape of it, which he cannot see from inside. The freedom he believes in is real, and it is entirely located in the future. Later. After this stretch at work. When the kids are a bit older. When he has strung enough good weeks together to have earned the right to call himself a free man in front of people who know him. He is not a man without hope. He is a man whose hope has an appointment, and the appointment keeps being moved, politely, by him.
And you have your own version, and it may not be a bottle at all. It might be the thing you look at. The way you speak to the people in your house on the third bad day in a row. The food, or the not eating. The phone at one in the morning. The anger that arrives so much faster than it used to and takes so much longer to leave. You know its name. You have said its name out loud to somebody, once, and it cost you something to do it.
And you sincerely believe you are getting free of this. Just not today. Never today. Your freedom lives in the future tense, and I want to tell you gently why that is: the future tense is the safest place on earth to store something. Nothing ever has to happen there.
Come and stand at the door with me a minute.

Freedom Is a Status Before It Is a Feeling
Before anything else, I want to take something off you, because I think it has been on your shoulders for years and it has slowed you down more than the thing itself.
If you are not free yet, that is not a verdict on how much you love God. It is not a shortage of wanting. You have wanted this more than anyone around you will ever know. You have wanted it in car parks, in bathrooms, at four in the morning, in the specific silence after everyone else has gone to sleep. Nobody in your life has spent more hours on this problem than you have. Whatever the reason is that the chain is still there, the reason is not that you did not try hard enough or believe hard enough, and I will not stand here and hand that to you. We carry that. You do not. The word that named you free never attached a clause about how many times that note has been written over, and the Holy Spirit is in the car park with you at the worst hour of it, not waiting at the far end of a good stretch to be introduced.
Now. The worst part is not the act. You know that already. The worst part is the twenty minutes afterwards, and the small collapse in your chest, and the way you cannot look at your own reflection while you brush your teeth, and the fact that you promised, out loud, in a car, and here you are.
Shame will tell you that the promise was the problem, that you should stop making them, that hoping is what keeps hurting you. Shame is a very confident liar and it has never once helped anybody.
Let me put a different sentence in the room.
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.John 8:31 and 32
And a few sentences later in the same conversation, He says that if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed. The word underneath "indeed" is not decoration. It means actually. Really. In fact rather than in theory. And it is His Spirit, not the strength of your grip on the wheel, who carries a sentence like that off the page and into the car park where you said the other one.
So here is what I need you to see, and it changes the whole geometry of your fight.
Freedom is a status before it is a feeling.
Think about what happens when someone is legally released. The moment of freedom is not the moment they feel different. It is not the moment they walk out of the gate, or the moment they get used to the street, or the first morning they wake up without bracing. The moment of freedom is a signature. Everything after that is a free person learning what to do with their hands.
And the walking does not create the freedom. The walking expresses it. A person can be legally free and still flinch at the sound of a bolt. That flinch is not evidence that the paperwork failed.
This is my whole name, so let me tell you where I got it.
In the book of Leviticus, God set a rhythm into the calendar. Every fiftieth year, on the Day of Atonement, a horn was sounded across the whole land, and liberty was proclaimed. Anyone who had been working off what they owed was released. They went home. To their own family, to their own ground, no matter what the last ten or twenty years had looked like.
Notice how that freedom arrived. Not by effort. Not by achievement. Not by a run of good weeks. It arrived as an announcement, on a day nobody could earn, and the announcement was sounded on the very day the price was paid. The freedom and the atonement were one sound.
And imagine, as I do, that some of them stayed at the bench a while. Habit is a heavy thing and fifty years is long enough to forget there was ever another life. Some of them, I would guess, kept working through the afternoon. And the horn did not sound again for them. It did not need to. It had already sounded, and their status had already changed, and every hour they stayed was an hour a free person spent at a bench.
Then Jesus stood up in a synagogue, read the passage about liberty for the captives, sat down, and said that the scripture was fulfilled that day, in their hearing.
That day. In their hearing. He did not schedule it.
So I am not asking you to believe that the pull is gone this evening. I am not going to promise you an easy month, and I am not going to hand you a date, because dates belong to God and He has not given me yours. What I am telling you is that the ownership has changed. And a pull from something that does not own you is a different animal entirely from a pull from something that does. One of them is a war. The other one is only weather.
So we move it. Right now, out of the future tense and into this hour, because that is where it was always kept and you have simply been reading the wrong calendar. John 8:36 is the signature, and the ink on it is long dry. What the Spirit does tonight is carry that off a page and into the hour you are actually standing in, keys still in your hand.
Two honest things, and then we act.
First: tell one human being tonight. A friend, a pastor, a group of people who have walked this road. Freedom held in secret stays theoretical, and this is not because you are weak, it is because that is how people are built and God built them that way on purpose. James 5:16 puts confessing and healing in the same breath for exactly that reason, and His Spirit does some of His plainest work in a room with a sink in the corner and a stack of chairs still to be folded.
Second: if what has a hold on you is something your body has come to depend on, please do not stop suddenly and do not do it alone. Talk to a doctor. There is nothing spiritual about gambling with a body God made, and He is not asking you to.
Now stand up, if you can. This next part is small and it is not symbolic. Your body is going to hear you say something true, and your body has been listening to the other thing for a long time.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud in the present tense and listen for the moment your mouth wants to move them into the future. That is the whole fight. In Christ the freedom is already purchased, so you are stating a fact rather than requesting one, and what settles it is Scripture rather than the steadiness of your voice. If the pull is back tomorrow at one in the morning, that is weather and not a reversal, because what John 8 settled is not re-argued by a bad Tuesday. His Spirit is why three spoken sentences land in your chest instead of dying on the windscreen, and why the signed papers stay in His keeping rather than being handed back to you to guard. Refuse someday the appointment it keeps asking for, and leave His timing to Him.
- Freedom, you are not in my future, you are in my mouth today. The Word of God says ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, and the Truth is a Person who is already here.
- Someday, get out in the name of Jesus. I stop postponing what Christ has already purchased, and I put my freedom in the present tense where He put it.
- Jesus, You are the Truth and You have already made me free. I stop waiting to feel released and I live as a person whose papers are signed, because everything after the signature is only me learning what to do with my hands.
