Breaking FreeEphesians 4:31

The Voice That Arrives Before You Do

This message is for the temper that is already loud in the room before you know you raised your voice

The tea towel is on the floor by the oven door and nobody has picked it up.

That is the first thing he notices when the room comes back to him. The towel, the striped one, lying folded over on the tiles where it fell off the rail when the chair went back too hard. The kettle is going. That is the second thing. It was going before, and it is still going now, and somehow it is obscene that a kettle would carry on like that.

He is standing in the doorway with both hands on the back of a chair. His own kitchen. Ten past six on a Wednesday, and he has been home nineteen minutes.

The question had been asked twice. That is all. Something about whether he had rung the garage. And it was asked in a particular tone, or it was not, and either way the answer was out of him before he had decided anything at all, and it was loud, and it went on for longer than the question deserved by a factor of about forty.

His son had been standing at the fridge with the door open. The boy closed it very gently. That is the part that is going to stay with him tonight, at half past two, when he is awake. Not the shouting. The gentleness of the fridge door.

His wife is upstairs. The house has that sound a house makes when everyone in it has gone quiet on purpose.

And here is the thing he cannot explain to anybody, and has never tried to: he does not remember the decision. There was no moment where he thought, right, now I am going to raise my voice. The voice was simply already in the room. It got there first. It arrived a half second before he did, and by the time he caught up with it, it had already said everything, and everyone had already heard it.

He picks the tea towel up. He folds it over the rail. He straightens it, twice, like a man doing something useful.

Now I am going to stop saying he.

Because you know that kitchen, and you know the half second, and you know exactly what it is like to arrive in a room where your own voice has been talking without you. You have said sorry so many times that the word has gone smooth in your mouth. You have made promises in the car park at midnight, to yourself, to God, real ones, meant with your whole chest, and then some Wednesday comes and a question gets asked twice.

And underneath all of it, the thing you actually believe about yourself, the thing you have never once said to another living person: that this is what is really in there, and the calm one is the act.

The house is quiet. You are standing in your own kitchen holding a tea towel and you have no idea how to walk up those stairs.

The Voice That Arrives Before You Do

It got there before you did

I am going to stay in this kitchen with you a minute, because I do not think this room has ever had company in it.

Two things are true at the same time tonight and I am not going to trade one for the other.

The first is that it did damage. The boy closed the fridge door softly and you saw it and it went into you like a splinter, and you are right that it matters. I am not going to smooth that over. Love does not tidy up the harm it caused and call the room clean.

The second is that the shouting is not the truest thing about you. It is the loudest thing about you, and you have spent years confusing those two, because loud feels like true. It is not. A siren is louder than a heartbeat and it tells you far less about a person. And that is not my kindness talking. The word coming next in this message names the clamor and sets it outside you, where it has always belonged, and the Holy Spirit carries that sentence far enough in to reach a man standing on these tiles at ten past six.

Now hear what the Word says, and hear who it is speaking to.

Let all bitterness and heated anger and wrath and shouting and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.Ephesians 4:31 and 32

Read who that letter is addressed to. It is written to people who are already His. It is not a list of conditions to meet before you belong. Paul is not standing at a door deciding whether to let you in. He is standing inside the house you already live in, saying, this can be put down now, because of what has already been done for you.

That last clause is the ground of the whole thing. As God in Christ has forgiven you. Not as you manage to hold yourself together. Not as you improve. The forgiveness came first and it is finished and it is behind every other instruction in that sentence.

And notice what it does not say. It does not say grip harder. It does not say get a better lid.

That is what you have been doing, and I want you to hear that it was never the answer, and that its failure is not a character verdict on you. You have been holding a door shut with your shoulder for years. Every day you did not shout was a day you held it. And a person can hold a door for a very long time, but nobody holds a door forever, and when it goes, it goes all at once, and then you stand in a kitchen and hate yourself for the strength you did not have. The verdict on you was written down long before you ever took hold of that door, and it reads forgiven. The Spirit who breathed that sentence into Paul is in this kitchen tonight, and He is not going back over your record with a pen.

Freedom is not a stronger shoulder. Freedom is the day the thing behind that door is dealt with by someone else.

Let me tell you what I understand about that half second, because it matters that you know it is not a mystery and it is not a demon of your own making. Something old is wired into that alarm. A house you grew up in, a voice you learned it from, a season where being loud first was the only way anything got heard. Your body filed it and kept it, and it still fires the whole thing off before your mind is even in the room. That is not you choosing. That is old wiring in a house that is not on fire any more.

And God is not standing at the end of that half second with His arms folded.

Here is the freedom, and it is real, and it is his work and not your grip: what Christ finished on the cross reaches back into that wiring. The old self is not being renovated. It is dealt with. You are not being asked to become a person who never feels the surge. You are being asked to receive a Man who steps into the half second with you and is not in a hurry. And He does not step in from across the room. Two verses above the ones I read you, Ephesians 4 calls Him the Spirit you were sealed with, and sealed is a finished word. It was done at the door of you. It is not pending your behavior this week.

And there is something practical I want to say plainly, because love is practical. If anyone in your home is frightened of you, tell one safe person and get real help. That is not a confession of failure. That is the strongest and kindest thing a man or a woman can do, and God is nowhere near ashamed of the person who does it.

The breakthrough

So put the tea towel down.

You have been standing in that doorway holding a folded cloth like it was evidence you were still a decent man, and you do not have to build a case tonight. The case was closed a long time ago at a cross, by someone else, in your favor. That is not a good mood I am handing you. Scripture puts the forgiveness first and every single instruction after it, and the Spirit standing where the tea towel fell has no interest at all in reopening a closed case.

This is where a held door becomes a handed one. Not next Wednesday, when you have proved something. Now, while the house is still quiet and you can hear the kettle.

You are not being asked to feel calm and you are not being asked to promise. Promises are what you have been making for years and they are not what is required of you. What is required is that you stop holding it alone. Hand it over in the plainest words you own. The written word never once asked you for eloquence, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better Wednesday to begin; He is nearer to you in this quiet house than the kettle is.

Freedom is yours. Not as a reward for a quiet week. As a gift, from the One who has already dealt with everything behind that door.

Declare this over yourself

Say them before the room fills up, out loud, in the morning, while everything is still quiet. In Christ you have standing to put a thing away and to put another thing on. Speak to the clamor, never to the people who receive it, and leave the outcome to Him who is teaching your mouth. The standing is not yours by temperament. It was given to you and promised to you in the same chapter you are about to quote, and the Holy Spirit is the breath under the words on a morning when your own voice comes out thin.

  1. Temper that arrives before I do, you are put away. The Word of God says let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.
  2. Raised voice, get out of my house in the name of Jesus. The very next verse says be ye kind one to another, and kindness is what moves in when clamor moves out.
  3. Lord, You are tenderhearted toward me and You are teaching my mouth. I receive kindness in the place of clamor, and I speak out of what You gave me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
