Shame Is Not the Cure for Shame

The sentencing happens in the hallway, in front of the mirror, about four minutes after it is over.

She stands there and says the word to her own reflection. One word, hard, the sort of word she would take a friend's face in her hands and forbid them ever to use about themselves. Then comes the rest of it, and she has done this so many times that it runs on rails. No food until tomorrow. No message to her sister, who does not deserve a liar in her inbox. She takes the good thing off her calendar, the one she had been looking forward to for a month, because a person like her has not earned a Saturday. And she does not tell one living soul, so there is nobody to say what are you doing to yourself.

She is not being dramatic and she is not enjoying it. She is doing what she genuinely believes is the responsible thing. Somewhere a long way back, she worked out a piece of arithmetic that has governed her life ever since: if she can make the fall hurt badly enough, she will stop falling. That is why the punishment is not cruelty in her mind. It is management. It is the only lever she has left, and she pulls it every single time, and every single time it works for about nine days.

Then it happens again. And because the shame did not stop it, she concludes the shame was not heavy enough, and she doubles it. Do you see the shape of that? She is not falling for a thing she has no defense against. She is running a machine, and shame is what she keeps feeding into it, and the machine turns and turns and she cannot understand why she is exhausted.

Beloved, put the mirror down and look at me. You are not reading about a stranger. You said last time was the last time, and you meant it with your whole heart, and here you are again in a hallway with a familiar sentence in your mouth about what you are. Come out of the corridor. There is a lamp on at the end of it and I have been waiting for you.

The whip and the wheel

Let me say your low place out loud, because a thing carried alone grows enormous in the dark.

You are tired in a way that sleep does not reach. You have made promises to God at two in the morning with real tears in them and broken them by the weekend, and now you are careful about what you promise Him, which is its own kind of grief. There is a version of you that people at church know, and it is not a lie exactly, but it is edited, and the editing costs you. You have started to flinch at the word free, because you have heard it sung a hundred times and you are still here. And underneath everything, the sentence: I know what I am. I just have to keep the lid on it.

Now hear me, and hear me as a mother would say it, with my hand on your arm. Romans 8:2 was set down for somebody standing in a corridor exactly like yours, and His Spirit carries it off the page and into the hallway.

The shame you have been using to try to stop yourself is not the cure. It is the fuel.

Look at what it actually does. Shame does not tell you that was wrong. Shame tells you you are wrong, and there is a canyon between those two sentences. The first one leaves you standing there able to turn around. The second one convicts the whole person, and a person who has been convicted entirely has nothing left to protect, and a person with nothing left to protect reaches for comfort, and the comfort they reach for is the very thing they were trying to stop. That is the wheel. You have been whipping the animal that turns it and calling it discipline.

There is another law available to you, and it is written down. Paul says it plainly, and he names the Spirit inside the sentence itself, because a law with no life in it is only one more rule spoken at a mirror.

For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.Romans 8:2

Two laws, and they are not two moods. They are two engines. One runs on condemnation and produces death, and it is remarkably efficient, and you have had it under your hood for years. The other runs on life and produces freedom, and it does not need your self-hatred to work. It never asked for it. It has never once been fed by it.

I have spent enough nights on my knees over people to tell you what shame does to a person's prayers, and it is the cruelest part of the whole business. It does not stop you praying. It changes who you think you are praying to. You start approaching Him the way you would approach a creditor. You lead with the apology, you keep the visit short, you do not ask for anything, and you leave before He can bring it up. Months of that, and you are still praying, technically, and you have not been anywhere near His face. That is what the machine costs you, and it is a far greater loss than the nine days. And the creditor posture is the one thing keeping you from noticing the Spirit already standing in the room, who has never once totted up the nine days and has never once asked you to.

And notice the tense in that verse. Has set you free. Not is thinking about it. Not once you have a clean quarter behind you. It is done language, spoken over people who were still very much in the middle of their own mess when it was written to them.

Now let me carry you across two things without arguing, because arguments have never freed anybody.

The first: God still breaks things off people, today, in ordinary rooms like the one you are in. The chain is not a metaphor He has retired. He has not moved on to gentler work. He still walks into hallways at eleven at night and ends what has been running for twenty years. The same Spirit who was moving when that verse was written is moving in the room where you are sitting now.

The second, which is the one you are stuck on: this is for you. Not for the first timer. Not for someone with a shorter list. You believe you have used up whatever there was, that the well ran dry for you somewhere around the fifth or the fiftieth time, and that you are now surviving on the fumes of a patience that has quietly run out. That is not true, and I am not going to debate it with you. I am simply going to tell you that the One who has watched every hallway sentencing has never once flinched, has never once agreed with the word you used about yourself, and has been waiting in the corridor the whole time with the lamp on.

And this too: this is not a message about trying harder. It is a message about what you have been trying with. Nothing here says you failed because you did not believe enough. That sentence has done enough damage in your life already, and it does not get to be repeated here by me. What stands over you instead is one written line about a law of life, and His Spirit speaks it in the present tense while you read.
