He sat in the car for four minutes with the engine off.
The house was ten steps away. The kitchen light was on and somebody in there had made dinner and somebody in there was going to ask him how his day was, and he needed four minutes to become the man who could answer that. He checked what needed checking. He cleared what needed clearing. He ran the story once in his head, start to finish, the way an actor runs lines, and then he tested a face in the mirror on the back of the sun visor until it looked like the face of a man who has nothing on his mind.
Then he went in, and he was good. He was so good. He asked about the day and he listened to the answer, and he laughed in the right place, and he put the plates away, and not one person in that warm kitchen had the slightest idea that the man drying the dishes was doing the hardest work of his entire day right there at the sink.
He had said last time was the last time. He had meant it in a way that people who have never meant it do not understand. He had prayed it with his whole chest at two in the morning, out loud, with tears, and he had meant every syllable. And then it happened again, and the four minutes in the driveway got a little longer, and the story got a little more detailed, and somewhere in there he quietly stopped believing that anything was ever going to change, and just got better at the driveway.
You know how many minutes yours takes. You know the exact route you take through the house when you come in. You know which questions you steer away from and which face you put on and how much of your mind is permanently reserved for the maintenance. And you are not reading this because you are wicked. You are reading it because you are tired. God help you, you are so tired.

The second job nobody ever paid for
Let us be honest about what is actually wearing you out, because I do not think it is the thing itself.
It is the running of the second life. Nobody warns you that a secret is not an event, it is an institution. It needs staffing. It needs a calendar. It needs a filing system in your head, and a story that stays consistent across months, and an alibi bank, and a set of reflexes fast enough to change a subject before anyone notices the subject changed. You are the sole employee of an organization whose only product is the appearance of an ordinary life, and you have been working there without a day off for years.
That is why you are exhausted in a way that rest does not touch. You are not carrying a sin. You are carrying a payroll. And the wage on that payroll is settled already, not by anything you filed this month: Luke 4:18 was read out over captives rather than over candidates, and the Spirit who was upon the man reading it is the reason that sentence still finds a driveway with the engine off.
And it takes the best of you. It takes the part of you that used to be spontaneous, because spontaneity is dangerous when you have things to keep track of. It takes your prayers, or rather it changes them, because you cannot pray freely in front of someone you are managing. It takes your affection for the people closest to you and puts a pane of glass in front of it, so that you love them from behind something, and they can feel the glass even though they could not tell you what it is. And it takes the small ordinary joy of being known, which is the thing every human being was made for, and which you have not tasted in a long time.
Then, at the very bottom, it takes your name. You stopped a while ago being a person who does a thing and started being, in your own private estimation, that. You would never say it out loud. But it is the sentence you use on yourself at three in the morning, and it has become the reason you do not stop, because a person who is that has nothing to walk back toward.
So hear who walked into a synagogue and read this out loud about himself.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.Luke 4:18
He read it, and he rolled up the scroll, and he handed it back, and he sat down, and he told the room that it had just been fulfilled in their hearing. Not scheduled. Fulfilled. The prisoners were not put on a list that day. The doors came off their hinges.
And notice something about that sentence, because you have been reading yourself into the wrong part of it. He was not sent to lecture the captives. He was not sent to assess whether the captives had earned an opening. He was sent to set them at liberty, and he came in person, and he came to the ones already in there. You have been waiting until you have improved enough to be a candidate for freedom. Freedom does not work like that and never has. It arrives at the cell.
Two things I need you to have before we go further, and I will not soften either one. You are standing inside both of them before you read another line. Both were written down long before you owned a car to sit in, and the Holy Spirit is what keeps them from being good news about somebody else.
The first is that this is not history. Whatever you were taught about how God used to move, the man who read that scroll is alive, and he has not amended the job description, and he is doing this today in houses exactly as ordinary as yours.
The second is that the length of your struggle is not a verdict on your faith. Not once, in any of it. You have prayed real prayers and they were heard, every single one, and the fact that you are still here does not mean you asked wrong, believed wrong or wanted it insufficiently. Anyone who told you otherwise handed you a weight that heaven never issued. We carry this. You do not. Nowhere in the word is liberty priced as a reward for a clean record, and the same Spirit who carried that scroll into the synagogue is standing at the sink beside you while you dry the plates.
Here is what actually breaks it, and it is smaller and harder than you think. Not more willpower. Light.
The thing that has kept its grip on you is not primarily the appetite. It is the hiding. Secrets grow in the dark for the same reason mold does, and the moment a thing is said out loud to one safe human being, it loses the part of its power that came from being unspeakable. That is why the enemy of your soul does not mind you struggling half as much as he minds you telling. He is not fighting for the behavior. He is fighting for the four minutes in the driveway.
So this is the morning you do not have to hide.
Say it to God first, right now, plainly, with no theological packaging. He is not learning anything. He has been in every one of those four minutes with you and he has not once left, and there is no version of you he has not already seen and stayed for. Psalm 139:1 puts it in writing centuries before your first driveway: you are searched and you are known, all the way down, and the Spirit of God is what turns that from an old line into the reason your voice is safe in this car.
And then, this week, say it to one human being who is safe: a pastor, a counselor, a friend with a closed mouth and an open face. Not the whole world. One person. If what you carry has a physical or medical hold on you, tell someone qualified to help you carry it, and let them. Reaching for help is not the opposite of being set free. It is very often the shape freedom takes on a Tuesday.
You are about to find out how much of you was being spent on maintenance. You are going to get that back.
Declare this over yourself
Say them as one person, out loud, in the driveway, before the changeover happens. God only ever made one of you, and in Christ that one has standing to speak. Say unto this mountain, remove hence, over the maintaining of two lives, and however He answers, Luke 4:18 stands where it has always stood: He came to set the bruised at liberty, and His Spirit is in the car with you while you say so.
- Double life, you are exhausting and you are ending. The Word of God says the Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He hath anointed Me to preach deliverance to the captives.
- Hiding, get out of my mornings in the name of Jesus. He was anointed to set at liberty them that are bruised, and I stop maintaining two versions of a person God only ever made one of.
- Lord, You came to set the bruised at liberty, and I bring You the whole of it. I wake up as one person today, because one person is who You made.
