Breaking FreeIsaiah 61:1

The Promise You Made at Nine

This message is for the vow you made as a child that is still running your adult life

The loft smells of cold dust and old newspaper, and the light through the small window has gone the color of weak tea, which means she has been up here an hour and a half and the dinner is not started.

She is kneeling. Bad knees, hard boards, and she has not noticed either, because she is holding a school exercise book with a sugar paper cover and her own name on the front in a hand that has not existed for thirty one years.

Halfway through, between a page of long division and a drawing of a horse, there is a page with a title on it. Underlined twice, with a ruler.

Rules.

There are six. Four of them are the kind of thing a nine year old writes, be nice to Susan, do not chew your sleeve. Number five has been crossed out so hard the paper has gone furry.

Number four says: never let anyone see you need anything.

She sits back on her heels in the dust.

Because she remembers the night. Of course she does, she has just never joined it to anything. The landing carpet. The particular pitch of her mother's voice through a closed door, the one that made her stomach go liquid. A suitcase on the hall floor with the handle up. And a small girl in pajamas working out, with the whole force of her small clever mind, that the way to survive this house was to be no trouble at all. To be the one who is fine. To never, ever, be another thing anybody had to deal with.

And it worked. That is what nobody ever says about these. It worked beautifully.

She is forty now and she is the capable one. She is the one people ring. She organized her father's funeral, both children's weddings and the office move, and she has never once in her adult life said the sentence, I am struggling, could somebody help me. She has been ill on her own. She has driven herself home from hospital. Her husband, who loves her, told her last spring that living with her is sometimes like living next door to somebody, and she said sorry, and then she made the tea, and then she went and stood in the garden in the dark for a while.

Never let anyone see you need anything.

She is still holding the book. Downstairs a door goes and somebody calls up to ask if she is all right, and she hears her own voice say, absolutely fine, coming down now.

And now I am going to stop calling her she.

Because you have a number four. Maybe not in a sugar paper book, but you know the wording, and you probably know the room and the hour it was written in. And the thing nobody has ever said to you is that it was a good rule.

Stay here in the dust with me a minute. I want you to meet the child who wrote it.

The Promise You Made at Nine

A nine year old built you a shelter, and it held

Let me say the honest thing first, and then the freeing thing, and I am not going to reverse the order.

That rule has cost you a marriage's worth of nearness. It has cost you friendships that never got past the second layer, because the questions were always coming from your side of the table. It has cost you help that was owed to you and would have been given gladly. And it has cost you the specific loneliness of being surrounded by people who love you and having none of them know a single true thing about how it actually is.

There. That is the bill and I am not going to pretend it is smaller than it is.

Now here is what I will not do. I will not call this clinging. I will not suggest that a braver or healthier or further along version of you would have put it down years ago. That is not what happened and it would be a lie dressed as insight.

What happened is that a frightened child in pajamas, on a landing, with a suitcase in the hall, did the most intelligent thing available to a nine year old. She built a shelter out of the only material she had, which was herself, and she got under it, and it held. It held through that year and the next one and the one after that. She is not a fool and she is not the villain of this story. She is the reason you are still standing.

You do not owe her an eviction. You owe her a thank you. Psalm 27:10 was written about a child exactly that size on exactly that landing, and His Spirit is why it is not a historical remark but something being done this afternoon, on bad knees, in a loft full of cold dust.

But a shelter built by a child is a shelter built to a child's measurements, and you are a grown woman living under a roof that was designed for someone four feet tall. That is not a moral failure. It is a mismatch, and it is precisely the kind of thing God comes for.

The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and the opening of the prison for those who are bound.Isaiah 61:1

Slow down on that last clause, because it is the one nobody reads properly.

The opening of the prison for those who are bound.

Notice what is not there. He does not send someone to teach the prisoners lock picking. He does not stand outside and shout instructions through the door about how they should have been trying harder to get out. The prison is opened. From the outside. By Someone else. Which means the whole reason you never got yourself out of this is not that you were weak, it is that this door has never once had a handle on your side. Isaiah 61 says opening, and it leaves that verb in the passive on purpose. The Spirit who was upon Him when He read it is the same Spirit standing in the dust up here with you.

And when Jesus stood up in the synagogue in Nazareth and read those exact words off the scroll, He rolled it up, and handed it back, and sat down while the whole room stared at Him, and said that this was fulfilled today, in their hearing. Today. Not as a poem about the far future. As a thing happening in the room where the words were being read.

I want you to notice who He is anointed for. The broken-hearted and the bound. Not the ones who managed. Not the ones who dismantled their own rules through sheer character. He came for people still living under something, and He came with good news and not with a report on their progress.

Freedom is His word for this. Not improvement. Not coping better. Freedom, which is a door standing open and a room you are allowed to walk out of at forty in your own time, with the exercise book still in your hand if you want it, because nothing here has to be thrown away in order for you to be free of it. His Spirit does not ask you to burn the exercise book. He walks you out of the room and lets you carry it down the ladder.

The breakthrough

So here is the moment, and it is not a moment of effort.

You are not going to break that rule tonight. You are going to find out it has already been opened, from the outside, by the One who was anointed for exactly this and who has been standing at that door since before you could read. The word He used in Luke 4:21 was today, and He was not being poetic with it. The hand already on the hinge is His Spirit, and it has been resting there a long time.

Say the rule out loud. That is all. In the child's words, not in grown up therapy language, in the actual sentence with the actual wording, because a thing said out loud in the light stops being the air you breathe and becomes an object in the room that you can look at.

And then look at who is standing beside it. He is not embarrassed by it. He is not going to ask why it took you so long. He is not comparing your forty years to anybody's. He is opening a door.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud on behalf of a nine year old who made a rule in the dark and has kept it ever since. That child could not speak then; in Christ you can now, and the standing is His given to you. What you are standing on is written rather than felt: Isaiah 61 is not rewritten by a reflex, so if number four says itself in your head halfway down the ladder tomorrow, that is habit talking and not law. His Spirit lifts a sentence clean up off a loft floor, and the Spirit who opened this door is not the one who would close it behind you. Address the vow, not the people around it, and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Vow I made at nine years old, you are released today. The Word of God says He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, and a child's promise was never a life sentence.
  2. Child's rule still running my adult life, get out in the name of Jesus. God came to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the youngest captive inside me is included in that.
  3. Lord, You bind up the brokenhearted, and You are binding up the nine year old who made that promise. I release the vow and I receive Your liberty.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
