She counted eleven days once. Eleven. She remembers the number the way other people remember a birthday, and she has never got back to it, and the not getting back to it is worse than the eleven days were good.
Tonight is day two.
There is a whole choreography to it now and she could perform it in her sleep. The little rise of tension around nine o'clock. The reason, always a reason, and tonight's reason is genuinely quite good. The moment of deciding, which never actually feels like a decision, more like a decision being announced to her by somebody who has already made it. Then twenty minutes of something that is not even pleasure any more, it is just the absence of the tension. Then the flat, gray, ordinary shame that arrives before the thing is finished, sits down beside her, and stays.
And then the vow. She still makes the vow. That is the part she cannot forgive herself for, the fact that she still makes it, at one in the morning, with her whole chest: that was the last time.
She has said that sentence more times than she has said almost anything else in her life.
You know what I am going to do now, and you are already bracing.
So let me not do the thing you are bracing for. I am not going to ask you how many times. I am not going to ask you why you did not just stop, or tell you that you clearly did not want it enough, or point at your faith and ask whether you really believed. Everybody has already done that to you, and worse, you have done it to yourself every night for years, and it has never once worked, because shame has never freed a single human being from anything in the history of the world.
Here is all I want to know, and I want you to answer it honestly, in your own kitchen, where nobody can hear.
When was the last time you actually tried the door?
Not the vow. Not the resolution, not the sentence at one in the morning. The door. Somewhere in you there is a way out you stopped walking toward, a long time ago, because you assume it is locked and you cannot survive one more rattle of the handle. So you stopped putting your hand on it. And a door you never touch feels exactly like a locked one.

The chains were off before he believed it
I need to say the low thing first, and I need to say it accurately, because if I get this part wrong you will not trust me with the rest.
The worst part of this is not the thing itself. It is what the repetition has taught you about you. Every cycle deposits a sentence, and the sentences have been stacking up for years: I am the kind of person who does this. I have proven it. Everyone thinks I am better than I am. If they knew the actual number, they would look at me differently. You are not just carrying a habit. You are carrying a verdict you have passed on your own character, and you have been enforcing it faithfully. The verdict is yours. It is not in Scripture anywhere, it is not in the mouth of God, and the Holy Spirit did not come into your evenings to co-sign it.
And the loneliest part is that you cannot tell anybody, because the telling would require admitting how long it has been going on, and how many promises are already behind you. So you carry it alone, and carrying it alone is precisely the condition it needs to survive.
Now hear me, because this is the true thing and it is not a consolation prize.
You are not free because you are good at resisting. You are not un-free because you lost on a Wednesday. Freedom, in the way the Bible speaks of it, is not a score you are maintaining. It is a status somebody else purchased and put in your name. And the Spirit did not stand at the back of the room waiting for a clean streak before He would seal it. He sealed it, and He has never once reopened the file.
For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.Galatians 5:1
Read that first clause on its own. Christ has set us free. Finished, past, completed, done by Him. Then read what Paul asks you to do about it, because he does not say win your freedom. He says stand firm. You stand firm in something you already have. The yoke that comes afterwards is one Paul says people submit to again, which means the door of that pen is not bolted from the outside. It swings.
And that is the whole geography of your situation, so let me be very plain about it. The pull you feel is real, and I am not minimizing it, and some of it has hooks in your body and your history that will need real people and real help. But the pull is not the lock. The pull is loud and the lock is imaginary, and you have been treating the volume of the pull as evidence about the door. Galatians 5:1 never once says the pull goes quiet. It says stand fast, and the Spirit of God is the strength in your legs while you do, which is why standing is available to you on a loud night and not only on a calm one.
There is a night in Acts I want you to see, because it is exactly you.
Peter is in prison, chained between two soldiers, guards on the door, execution scheduled for the morning. An angel wakes him, and the chains fall off his wrists, and he is walked past the guards, and when they reach the iron gate into the city, the gate opens by itself. And here is my favorite sentence in the whole passage: Peter did not know that what was happening was real. He thought he was seeing a vision. He was already out of the chains, already through the gate, already standing in a street in the open air, and his own mind had not caught up with his own freedom.
He came to himself in the street. Free the whole time, and the last to know.
That is not a rebuke of Peter and it is not a rebuke of you. It is a description of what deliverance actually feels like from the inside, which is: unbelievable. You will very likely walk out of this before you feel free, not after. The feelings are the slowest passenger in the car and they always arrive last, and they are not driving.
So let me put the second conviction in front of you, the personal one, because you have quietly decided this is for other people. Other people get out. Other people have a testimony with a clean date on it. You have a spreadsheet of relapses.
Friend, Jesus did not come to the recovered. He walked into the exact rooms religious people would not enter and He sat down at the table and ate with the ones everybody had written off, and He was criticized for it constantly, and He never once defended Himself by claiming they had cleaned up first. He came for people mid-cycle. He came for people on day two. He is not standing at the end of your journey waiting for you to arrive with a good report. He is in the room tonight, with the reason and the tension and the flat gray shame, and He is not shocked and He is not leaving. That is not my reading of His personality, it is the written record of how He spent His time. His Spirit came into your room tonight for the same reason He sat down at those tables.
And say the practical thing with me, because love is practical: tell one safe human being this week. A doctor, a counselor, a group, a friend who will not flinch. Freedom nearly always comes with hands attached to it, and God is completely unembarrassed about using people. Reaching for help is not a failure of faith. It is what walking through the door usually looks like.
So put your hand on the handle.
Not tomorrow, not after a better week, not once you have strung together enough clean days to feel entitled to it. Now, tonight, at day two, with the shame still sitting in the chair beside you. Nowhere in Scripture does the door wait for a better week, and the Spirit already in your hallway is not standing there to watch you find courage. He is the courage, arriving.
You have spent years trying to break a lock. You do not have to break anything. You have to test an assumption, and the assumption is the only thing holding you in the room. Christ has already dealt with the lock. What is left is the walk, and the walk starts with one small physical act of disbelief in the door's power over you.
Declare this over yourself
Say them with your hand on the handle you have not tried, out loud, before you find out. Christ has already made you free, so the standing is settled and only the standing fast is yours to do. Speak to the assumption, and whatever He does next with the door, He is holding it. Galatians 5:1 is the written word sitting under every line, and the Holy Spirit is the breath in your chest that carries them out of your mouth.
- Door, you were never locked from the inside. The Word of God says stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
- Assumption that I am stuck, get out in the name of Jesus. Christ has already made me free, which means the standing is mine to do and the freeing was always His.
- Lord, You made me free and You are holding the door. I push and I walk out, because it opens from my side.
