A Report From Thirty Years Ago

This message is for the line on a school report from thirty years ago that you still believe

She had gone up into the loft for the Christmas box and she was not supposed to be up there longer than four minutes.

The bulb up there is bare and it swings if you knock the joist, which she did, so the whole space was moving slowly in and out of shadow while she worked along the row. Christmas box. Camping box. A bag of curtains nobody has hung since the last house. And then a brown cardboard box with the flaps folded over each other in that way that means nobody has opened it in a long time, and her mother's writing on the side in marker pen: SCHOOL.

She sat down on the boards. Her knees do not like the boards.

Swimming certificates, laminated and gone slightly yellow. A photograph of a class of twenty nine children in maroon jumpers, and she found herself instantly, second row, not smiling. And under that, in a stiff folder, the reports. Autumn term. Spring term. Summer term. Someone had kept every single one.

She read four of them and they were fine, they were what reports are, mostly kind and mostly nothing.

Then the fifth one. Third line down. Blue biro, a tidy sloping hand, from a woman whose face she cannot recall at all.

Capable enough, but takes the easy road. Will not see anything difficult through.

She is forty three years old. She runs a department of eleven people. She rebuilt a service that everyone said could not be rebuilt, and she did it in eighteen months while her father was ill. And she sat on a loft floor in the dust with her hands gone cold, and she was nine.

Because here is the thing, and this is where it stops being about her.

You have one of these. It may not be on paper. It may have been said across a kitchen table, or in a corridor, or once, lightly, by somebody who meant nothing by it and forgot the same afternoon. But there is a sentence about you from a very long time ago that you have never actually stopped believing, and you know the exact wording.

And you have built around it. Quietly. Sensibly. You over prepare for everything, because you cannot be caught out. You do not start things in public. You leave at about the eighteen month mark, before anyone can find out. You take the smaller role, and you tell yourself it is because you are realistic about yourself, and you have said that sentence so many times you no longer hear whose voice it is in.

Thirty years. That woman has almost certainly forgotten your name. And you have been living inside her handwriting.

A Report From Thirty Years Ago

I am not going to argue with the report

Let me tell you straight away what I am not going to do, so you can stop bracing for it.

I am not going to build you a case against that teacher. I am not going to list your achievements back to you, or measure out the distance traveled since, or point at the department of eleven and the eighteen months and the service everyone said was finished. I could. It would sound wonderful. And you would nod, and thank me, and go home, and at about half past eleven tonight the sentence would still be there, exactly where it was.

Because that has already been tried. The evidence in your hands is better than mine, thirty years of it, filed and dated, and it has never once moved that line by so much as a millimetre.

An old verdict is not undone by a better argument. It is undone by being seen by someone whose look actually counts.

So let me show you a sentence that is not an argument.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, a new creation! The old things have passed away; look, new things have come.2 Corinthians 5:17

Read what it does not say. It does not say the record has been reviewed. It does not say the report was unfair, or that there were mitigating circumstances, or that the teacher was tired and had ninety of these to write before Friday, though she almost certainly was and almost certainly did. There is no appeal in this verse. There is no amended paperwork.

There is a new creation.

That is a different category of answer altogether, and it is the reason the verse can afford not to argue. Nobody amends a file when the person the file was about no longer exists in that form. Paul does not tidy the old thing up. He says it has passed away, the way a season passes, and then he does something you can miss in a hurry.

He says look.

That is the instruction. Not prove. Not defend. Not build the case, list the evidence, win the room. Look. The whole weight of that verse rests on a person lifting their eyes and seeing what is actually there now. And what is there now is you, new, already, before one thing has been proved to anybody. That is written in 2 Corinthians 5:17 as a finished piece of work, and the Spirit of God brings an ancient sentence into a loft in the present tense.

And a verse earlier, Paul had already said the thing that undoes a report card. From now on, he says, we regard no one according to the flesh. Nobody is read by their file anymore. Not by their record, not by their category, not by twenty minutes of a tired adult's attention in a staff room in October.

Which means the reading of you that matters was never taken in that classroom. You are read off Scripture now and off nothing else, and His Spirit takes that line off the shelf and into a loft with a swinging bulb.

It was taken by the One who was in the room the whole time. Who saw the nine year old who was not smiling in the second row, and knew exactly why. Who has watched every hour since, including all the ones nobody graded, the ones with no certificate and no witness, the eighteen months with your father, the night you did the difficult thing precisely because it was difficult and never told a living soul.

He is not impressed by your evidence and He never needed it. He has simply been looking at you the whole time, and He calls you His.

You are His. That was written down long before the maroon jumpers and the tidy sloping hand, and the Holy Spirit speaks it over you now with nothing added to it and nothing asked of you first.

The breakthrough

So stop presenting.

You have been standing at the front of a courtroom for thirty years, holding up exhibits, waiting for a verdict that was handed down long before you got there and went the other way from the one you were expecting.

The old thing has passed away. Not been overturned. Passed away. And the One who says so is not weighing your submissions, He is looking at you, and He has been looking the entire time, and there has never been a moment when His reading of you agreed with the blue biro. That verdict stands written in 2 Corinthians 5:17 and has never been amended, and His Spirit keeps lifting your face up out of the paperwork.

You are not the easy road. You are not the child who would not see it through. You are new, and it is not an opinion, and it does not require your defense.

Put the exhibits down and let yourself be looked at.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud over a sentence somebody wrote about you in biro thirty years ago. It has been quoted in your head ever since and never once answered. In Christ you have standing to answer it now, because a new creature is not bound to an old verdict. Speak, and however He answers, He has already closed that file. Not one of these lines is mine. Scripture wrote them over you first, and the Holy Spirit brings them down the loft ladder with you when you climb back out.

  1. Line on a school report, you are thirty years old and you are not my verdict. The Word of God says if any man be in Christ he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.
  2. Old things, you are passed away in the name of Jesus. I stop quoting a teacher who never met the person Christ made, and I start quoting the One who did.
  3. Lord, You made me new and You did not do it by halves. I receive the new and I release the file, because You have already closed it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
