He has given his testimony four times now, and it is a good one. People come up to him afterward. He tells it well, without theatrics, the way an honest man tells a hard story: where he was, how far down it went, what happened the night it turned, and where he is standing today. Nine minutes, roughly. It works every time, and every word of it is true.
And there are eleven months in the middle of it that he has never said out loud to a living soul.
They sit between minute four and minute five, and he crosses them with a phrase. That season. When things were at their worst. He built that phrase carefully, years ago, and it has held. Nobody has ever pushed on it, because why would they, and so the eleven months have stayed exactly where he put them, sealed, carried into every room he has ever walked into since.
He is not lying. That is what makes it so heavy. He is telling the truth with one door shut, and every time somebody thanks him for his honesty, the door gets a little heavier, because now there is a man they admire and there is a man who knows what is behind the door, and those are two different men living in one body, and only one of them ever gets to be loved.
You do the same thing, only maybe not from a platform. You do it at small group. You do it in your own prayers, which is the strangest part, because you go quiet at exactly that point of the story, with God, who was in the room for all of it. You have a phrase too. You have said it so often that it has gone smooth, like a stone in a river. And it works. And it costs you something every single time.

The thing you cannot argue yourself out of
I am not going to try to talk you out of your shame. I would lose, and you would be polite about it, and nothing would move.
Because you already know the arguments. You know that grace covers everything. You could preach it to somebody else this afternoon and it would land and they would be helped. That is the strangeness of this particular wound. It is not that you have bad theology. Your theology is fine. It is that your theology has a small square cut out of it, exactly the size and shape of that thing, and no amount of reasoning has ever filled it in, because the wound was never made by an argument and it does not answer to one. That is why the Spirit was given and not only the written page. What is written goes into the square that reasoning cannot fill, and He is the one who walks it in there.
So let me not argue. Let me tell you what I know about being seen.
Here is the weight, said plainly, so you know I am not talking around it. You believe that God loves you in general and would leave you in particular. You believe he is good to people, and that if he ever looked straight at the eleven months, straight at the thing you did or the thing that was done to you or the thing you wanted and nearly took, his face would change. That is the fear. Not hell. Not punishment. His face changing. You could survive being judged. What you do not think you could survive is being looked at with disappointment by the one Person whose look you actually need.
The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.Zephaniah 3:17
Sit with who that was written to. That was not spoken over a people at their best. Zephaniah spends most of his short book naming exactly what was wrong with them, in detail, without softening it. He does not get to chapter three and forget. It is the same people, the same record, the same God who has just finished saying what he has seen. And then he says he is in their midst, and that he rejoices over them, and that he quiets them by his love, and that he sings over them out loud.
He knew the worst of it. He stayed in the middle of them. He sang.
That is not a God who has not been told. That is a God who has been told everything and did not move.
And I want you to notice the direction of the singing, because most people read that verse and never catch it. You are not the one singing in that sentence. He is. Over you. Loudly. You have spent years trying to work up enough worship to cover the gap, and the whole time there has been a song going on above your head that you did not have to earn and could not have written. And the Spirit has been letting that reach you all evening, which is the only reason a man with a shut door can hear singing at all.
Now hear the second thing, and this is the one that has to land in your body and not just your head. That verse is not a nice ancient sentiment. It is how God is, and God does not have a former self. The same One who stood in the middle of a people who had failed and sang over them is the One in your room right now, and he is not on his way toward you and he is not deciding. He is in your midst, present tense, already.
And when he came in person, he made it unmistakable. He went to a well at noon to meet a woman who was there at noon precisely so nobody would see her, and he named her history out loud, all five marriages and the man she was with then, and she did not run. She ran to town to tell people. Do you understand what that means? He said the worst of it to her face, and it came out of his mouth as safety instead of exposure, and it set her free in one afternoon.
He knew her worst. He stayed at the well. That is the whole gospel in one conversation.
And there was Peter, who is in the Bible for you specifically. Jesus told him, to his face, in advance, that he was about to deny him three times before the rooster crowed. Sit with that. He knew the worst thing Peter would ever do before Peter did it, and he had already chosen him, and he did not withdraw the choosing. And after it happened, after Peter had done exactly what he swore he never would and had wept about it, Jesus came to a beach at dawn and made him breakfast. He did not open with the failure. He cooked, and he fed him, and then he asked him three times if he loved him, once for each denial, and each time gave him back the work.
That is what he does with the thing you are hiding. He knew it first. He chose you anyway. And what he wants to do with it is feed you and give you back your life. Peter's worst night is still in the book, on purpose, kept there by the Spirit who has never once thought a page like that should be quietly lost. John 21 leaves the denial in, and then serves breakfast anyway.
So I am not going to ask you to explain the eleven months to me, or to anybody. This is not about disclosure and you are not obligated to hand your history to a room. The Spirit did not come to march you onto a platform. He came to sit with you where the door is shut, in the part of the house that Psalm 139:12 calls not dark to Him at all.
I am asking you to stop hiding it from the One who was there.
Say it to him. Out loud, with the door shut if you need the door shut. Not the smooth phrase. The actual thing, in the actual words, the ones you have never let out of your mouth. He is not receiving new information. He has known since before you knew, and he did not leave, and the evidence that he did not leave is that you are reading this, still reaching, still wanting him after all this time. That wanting did not survive on its own. He kept it alive in you.
You are not two men. You are not two women. There is one of you, the whole of you, history and all, and the whole of you is who he is in the midst of, and the whole of you is who he sings over. Zephaniah 3:17 was written over a people whose record had just been read out loud, and the Spirit sings it over the whole of you tonight, eleven months included, with nothing crossed out first.
Something is going to come off you in the next few minutes. It has been carried a long way and it was never yours to carry.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud with the part you never tell still sitting in the room. Do not tidy it first. In Christ you have standing that your history cannot revoke, which is precisely why you can speak while it is in the open. Address the fear of being found out, and however He answers, He saw it all and stayed. The Holy Spirit does not wait outside the part you never tell. He is in there already, and what is written is written over the whole of you, eleven months and all.
- Part of my history I keep hidden, you are already known and He stayed anyway. The Word of God says the Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty, and He joys over me with singing.
- Fear of being found out, get out in the name of Jesus. He has seen the whole of it and He rests in His love, and a God who rests is a God who is not about to leave.
- Lord, You rejoice over me with singing, and You knew every part of it before the first note. I receive the joy of a God who stayed.
