Identity in ChristPsalm 139:1

You Are Not Too Much for Him

This message is for the feeling that you are too much for people, and always have been

The indicator is ticking and the light is red and Priya is going back over the evening the way you rewind a tape.

She has the empty dish on the passenger seat with a tea towel over it, and she is nine minutes from home, and she is auditing.

The bit about her brother. She went on too long about her brother. She saw Mel glance at Dev, one of those small quick glances that means nothing and means everything, and she cut herself off mid-sentence and said anyway and laughed, and then the table moved on and she sat there with the rest of the sentence still in her mouth like something she was not allowed to swallow.

Then she laughed too loudly at the thing about the boiler. Then she asked Bea a question that was probably too direct. Then she filled a silence that maybe did not need filling, and she knew while she was doing it that she was filling it, and she did it anyway, because silences do something to her that she has never been able to explain.

Green light. She goes.

She is not upset with anyone at that table. That is the thing. They were lovely. Nobody did anything. There is no villain in this car. There is just the same arithmetic she has been running since she was eight years old, which goes: how much of me came out tonight, and was it more than the room could hold.

Her mother used to say it kindly. You are a lot, love. Kindly, and often, and it lodged.

So she made herself into someone who edits. She has an internal draft going at all times. She rounds herself down before anyone else has to.

And here is where you take the wheel, because you have driven this road.

You know the audit. You know the replay at eleven at night, the message you sent that you now cannot stop rereading, the way you laugh a half-second early to get ahead of it. You have shrunk your enthusiasm to a size you thought people could carry. You have swallowed the second half of sentences your whole life. You have watched people's faces for the exact moment they start to tire of you, and the worst part is you are usually right about the moment, and being right about it has never once made it hurt less.

You are so tired of being a lot.

You Are Not Too Much for Him

He did not want the shorter version

I am not going to argue with you about this.

I could. I could line up reasons why you are not too much, and you would nod, and you would find the exception before I finished, because you have been building the case against yourself for thirty years and I am not going to out-lawyer that in nine hundred words. Anyway, the moment this becomes a case being made, you have already lost, because a person who has to be argued into belonging does not belong. They have been permitted.

So let me do the other thing instead, the thing that actually works. I am going to read you what is written and let His Spirit put it where my reasoning cannot reach. Let me just show you where you are already standing.

O LORD, You have searched me and known me.Psalm 139:1

Sit in that first verb a moment. Searched. Not glanced at. Not formed a general impression of. Searched, the way you search a house, room by room, opening the cupboards, going up into the loft where the boxes are. David had it written down after the search and not before it, and the Spirit who moved his hand is not squeamish about what is in the loft.

He went through the whole of you. The volume. The intensity. The needing-to-know. The way you love people hard and fast and slightly too soon. The second half of the sentence you did not say tonight in the car. The eight-year-old doing the arithmetic. The parts you have never let anybody see because you were sure they would confirm the verdict.

He searched all of it.

And then, knowing all of it, He stayed.

That is the whole of it, and it is not an argument, and there is nothing for you to answer. The psalm does not say He examined me and found the ratio acceptable. It says searched, and known, and the next hundred and seventy lines of that psalm are a man discovering he cannot get away from a God who will not stop being interested in him.

You have never once been too much. You have been unseen by people who were doing their best with a smaller capacity than His. Those are not the same thing, and you have spent your life confusing them. Nothing in Psalm 139 asks the man to be less, not in a hundred and seventy lines of it, and His Spirit has been saying the same thing to you on that drive home for years.

The breakthrough

You do not need to become less. That has been the project and it was never the assignment.

Here is what changes today, and it is not your size. It is the room you are standing in. You have been living your whole life in rooms with a ceiling, and every one of those ceilings was a real person with a real limit, and none of them were cruel, and all of them were low. So you learned to duck. Of course you did. That is not a character flaw, that is intelligence.

But there is no ceiling in this room. That is Isaiah 40:28, written down long before anybody ever glanced at a clock on you: He does not faint, He is not weary, His understanding has no end to it. And His Spirit is in here with you, not checking the time either.

The God who searched you does not tire at minute forty. He is not managing His capacity while you talk. There is no moment coming where He glances at somebody else across the table. You cannot use Him up, and you cannot exhaust Him, and you have never in your entire life said one sentence that was longer than He wanted.

So stand up straight in here. Stop rounding yourself down. The volume, the depth, the intensity, the wanting to know people properly, all the things you have been apologizing for since you were eight: those were not the problem. Those were the design.

You are not too much. You are finally in a room big enough. Scripture never once asked you for the shorter version, and His Spirit is not editing you while you speak.

Declare this over yourself

Say them all the way through without editing, out loud, at full volume, without the careful trimming you do on the drive home. He searched you and knew you and stayed, and being in Him is the standing you speak from. Nobody here is measuring you, least of all me. It was written down long before you were born, and His Spirit does not hand it over in a smaller size. Address the habit of dimming, and however He answers, none of you has ever overwhelmed Him.

  1. Feeling of being too much, you are answered. The Word of God says O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me, and He searched the whole of me before ever He said He loved me.
  2. Habit of dimming myself, get out in the name of Jesus. He knows my downsitting and mine uprising and He understands my thought afar off, and not one bit of it has ever overwhelmed Him.
  3. Lord, You searched me and You stayed, and You are not tired of me today. I bring You all of me, because all of me is what You already know.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
