Identity in ChristRomans 8:1

The Thing You Lead With in Your Own Head

This message is for the failure you introduce yourself by inside your own head

The urn has been ticking for twenty minutes and it is still not ready, which is the way of those urns. Wednesday night, the fellowship hall in the basement, the low ceiling with the pipe running across it that everybody over six foot has learned to duck. Folding chairs set out in a ring. Somebody has put a plate of store bought cookies on the side table and covered it with a paper towel.

By the door there is a card table with a sheet of blank name tags on it and a marker tied to the leg with string, because the markers kept walking.

A man is standing at that table. Mid fifties, work jacket, hands that have done something for a living. He picks up the marker and writes his first name on the tag.

Four letters. It takes him longer than four letters ought to take.

Because the name goes down on the sticker, but in his head it does not go down alone. It never has. He writes those four letters and the rest of the sentence comes with them the way it always comes, the second half he did not write and cannot stop, the one that starts with and and ends with the thing this whole town already knows about him.

He peels the tag off the backing. He presses it flat on his jacket with his thumb, twice, harder than he needs to. He goes and sits in the ring.

And when it comes around and it is his turn, he says his first name out loud, four letters, and everybody nods, and the woman next to him smiles, and inside his head the full sentence went out with it. The whole thing. Every word. It has never once not gone out with it, not in eleven years, not one single time.

He is not being dramatic. If you asked him he would tell you he is fine. He is fine.

And I am going to stop calling him he.

Because you have a second half.

You know the exact wording of it. You have never written it on anything and you have never said it out loud in a room with people in it, and it goes with your name everywhere your name goes. Into the appointment. Into the interview. Into the pew. You cannot introduce yourself to a stranger in a hardware store without it running underneath, and the awful smallness of it is that the stranger has no idea, and you are the only person in the entire building who is hearing it.

You have not said your own name plainly in years. Not plainly. Not by itself.

Come here and sit down. Not to be talked out of anything. Just sit.

The Thing You Lead With in Your Own Head

The second half of the sentence

I want to be straight with you about what I am not going to do.

I am not going to take your second half line by line and show you why it is unfair. I could. It would be true, most of it. And it would not hold, and you already know it would not hold, because you have done exactly that for yourself at two in the morning more times than you can count, and by breakfast the sentence was back and it had not lost a word.

An argument you win with yourself has to be won again tomorrow. That is the trouble with arguments. You are the judge, and you are also the one being judged, and you have never once believed yourself. Which is why the answer here is not a better argument. Romans 8:1 is a verdict already entered, and the Spirit reads it into a basement with a ticking urn, somewhere your own reasoning at two in the morning has never once been able to reach.

So I am not going to build you a case. What I am going to do is tell you who has already read the file.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.Romans 8:1

Sit still in that word now.

Not later, when you have made up the ground. Not when the town forgets. Not when you have gone a full year without the second half running. Now, tonight, in the basement with the urn ticking, with the sentence still perfectly intact in your head, with you not one bit further along than you were this morning.

And notice something about the shape of it. That is not a sentence somebody is arguing for. Nobody is presenting evidence there. It is announced. It has the flatness of a thing already settled somewhere else and simply read out, the way a man in a courtroom finds out the matter was decided before he came in. It was written as a notice and not as a case, and it is the Spirit who walks it down the basement stairs to a man in a work jacket instead of leaving it in a letter to Rome.

Here is what I need you to hear, and it is the whole message.

He did not have to be told.

Whatever your second half is, He was there for it. He watched the whole of it, from the inside, in real time, and He has the details you have never given anybody, including the parts you have quietly softened in your own retelling because you could not carry the unsoftened version. He read the file. All of it. Not the summary you hand to people. The file.

And having read it, He came and stood next to you. Romans 8:1 puts that in writing, and it is not a feeling: the Spirit holds it steady on the nights you feel nothing at all.

That is not an argument. That is a look. You have been trying to fix this by getting your thinking straight, and it cannot be fixed there, because it was never a thinking problem. It is a being seen problem. A man does not stop bracing because somebody proved to him he is safe. He stops bracing when somebody who knows everything sits down beside him and does not move.

That is what the cross was. Not God being persuaded. God arriving.

The condemnation went somewhere. It did not evaporate and it was not overlooked, and He did not tell you it was nothing, because it was not nothing and you would never have believed Him. It went onto Him. He took the second half of your sentence and put it on His own back and He carried it out of the building.

So the sentence you have been introducing yourself by is not yours to carry any more. Not because it did not happen. Because it has already been carried. Isaiah 53:4 had Him bearing what was never His long before that marker was tied to the table leg with string, and the Spirit is not waiting for you to feel finished before He calls it finished.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is quieter than you expected.

You are not being asked to stop believing the second half. You are being asked to notice that Somebody read it first and stayed.

Everything in you wants the sentence to be untrue, because you think that is the only way you get to be free of it. It is not. Freedom on this one does not come from the sentence being false. It comes from the sentence being known, fully, by the One whose opinion is the only one with any standing, and Him deciding to keep you anyway. Romans 8:1 does not say the record was mislaid. It says there is no condemnation, which is a different and a far better thing, and the Spirit has been saying it over you in that basement the whole time the urn was ticking.

He knows. That is the good news. He knew before you walked into the basement, He knew when you were pressing that tag flat with your thumb, and there is not one thing left for you to confess that would change His face.

You do not have to introduce yourself by it any more. Not to Him. He never once heard it that way.

Declare this over yourself

Say them instead of the sentence you usually lead with, out loud, so a different introduction gets made today. There is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and that is your standing rather than your track record. Not one of these lines takes its weight from me. Romans 8:1 carries them, and the Spirit is in the room where you are standing, which is the whole difference between reading a verdict and hearing it read over you. Speak to the failure you keep quoting, and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Failure I introduce myself by, you are not my introduction. The Word of God says there is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, and now is the word that dates it.
  2. Condemnation, get out of my head in the name of Jesus. There is none, and none is a total, so there is nothing left over for me to keep quoting.
  3. Lord, You lead with grace whenever You speak about me. I lead with what You say, because You hold the only accurate account of who I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
