Chosen Is Not a Compliment

This message is for the feeling that being chosen was a mistake in the paperwork

For six years he had set up the chairs. He came early, he stacked them after, he ran the vacuum when nobody asked him to, and he made the coffee badly and everyone drank it anyway. He was not on any list. He was not asked to speak and would have said no. He was the man who was simply there, every week, in the same seat at the back with his jacket over the chair beside him.

Then one Thursday the pastor caught him on the way out, put a ring of keys in his palm, folded his fingers over them, and said, would you open up for us on Sunday. Nothing more than that. Then he walked off to talk to somebody else, the way people do when a thing is settled.

He drove home with those keys on the passenger seat like they were a live animal. He did not put them on his own key ring. That night he lay awake building the sentence he would use to give them back, and the sentence had a lot of versions and they all came down to the same thing. You have the wrong man. Somebody wrote my name where they meant to write someone else's. If you knew what my week has actually looked like, if you knew what I think about when the house is quiet, you would want those keys back and you would not know how to ask.

And here is the thing, friend, and this is where you and I are talking about you. You have felt exactly that about God. Not about church keys. About the whole thing. Somewhere along the way it landed on you that you were let in on a technicality, that the paperwork went through before anybody checked properly, and you have been waiting a long time now for the correction to come through.

Chosen Is Not a Compliment

The word is not a grade

We have got the word chosen wrong, and it has cost people like you more than we know.

We hear it as a compliment. We hear it the way it sounded when the teams were being picked in the schoolyard, where being chosen meant somebody looked at what you could do and rated it highly enough. So when the word turns up in Scripture with your name near it, everything in you does the same arithmetic. It compares your inside with what a chosen person ought to be. And it comes back short, every time, because you know exactly what four in the afternoon on a bad Tuesday does to you.

But that is not what the word is doing. Watch what it actually says.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.John 1:12

Gave he power. The word underneath that is the word for authority, for a right that is conferred. It is not a word about ability and it is not a word about merit. It is the sort of word that belongs on a document. Somebody with the standing to grant it has granted it, and the person receiving it does not manufacture one gram of it. It is given. It is handed over. It is signed.

That is the difference, and it is everything. A compliment is an opinion about you, and opinions can be revised the moment new information comes in, which is why you have been bracing for the revision. A legal act is not an opinion. It does not get quietly reversed when somebody finds out what you are like. It stands because of the standing of the One who did it, not because of the quality of the one it was done for. John 1:12 is the document, and Romans 8:16 says His Spirit bears witness with your spirit that the name on it is genuinely yours.

And now let me say the part nobody says out loud to you, so you are not sitting there alone with it.

You have felt like a clerical error in the family of God. You clap along in the room and you mean it and you also feel like an impostor while you do it. You have watched other people receive things easily and assumed the difference is that they are the genuine article and you are a near miss. You have read a verse about being loved and put it down because it obviously means someone else, someone with a cleaner history, someone whose thoughts do not go where yours go. And you have never told anybody any of this, because saying it out loud might make it true.

I am not going to argue you out of that. I would only lose, because you have been arguing with yourself about it for years and you know all your own moves. So let me do something else instead. The written record is not on your side of that argument, and the Spirit did not keep it so that you could read yourself out of it. Let me tell you who He keeps picking.

He picked a man threshing wheat in a winepress because he was hiding from the enemy, and the angel opened with, mighty man of valor, while he was still crouched down in there. He picked the youngest son who was not even called in from the sheep for the interview, because nobody in that house thought to include him. He picked a tax collector at his table, a man his whole town considered a traitor, and He said follow me in front of everybody. He picked fishermen. He picked a man who had spent his best years hunting believers down.

Look at that list. Not one of them looks right on paper. That is not God making do with what was available. That is the pattern. It has been the pattern since the beginning, and if you have been searching your own record for the flaw that will finally disqualify you, you have been auditing the wrong document entirely. The document is His.

There is one more thing in that verse worth standing on for a second. It says become the sons of God, and Scripture keeps reaching for the language of adoption when it wants to describe what happened to you. That is a deliberate choice of words, and if you have ever known an adopted child you already understand why it matters. An adopted child is not on probation. They did not audition. They cannot be sent back for behavior, and the paperwork does not have a clause in it about how the first year goes. The whole weight of the thing rests on the parent who went and got them, and it was never in the child's hands for one minute. Romans 8:15 calls Him the Spirit of adoption, and that is the Spirit in you on the day the word Father gets past your teeth without you checking the paperwork first.

That is what was done for you. Not a trial arrangement. Not a provisional listing pending review. A father went and got you, deliberately, and put his name on you.

And this is not history. He is still doing it. He is still walking into ordinary rooms and putting the keys into the hands of the person at the back who came early to set up the chairs. Not a metaphor, not a story about people who lived a long time ago. This morning, in your house, about you.

The breakthrough

So stop waiting for the correction to come through. It is not coming.

There is no letter in the post explaining that a mistake was made. There is no second look, no quiet review, no moment where He gets the full file and His face changes. He had the full file before He signed. He knew the Tuesday afternoons. He knew the thing you have never said to anyone. He folded your fingers over the keys anyway, and He walked off to talk to somebody else, the way people do when a thing is settled.

You are not on trial today. You are home. Receive it here, in this chair, while nothing about you has changed. That verdict is not mine to hand you. Ephesians 1:5 says the adoption was decided before you drew a breath, and His Spirit is sitting in the passenger seat with the keys, saying so.

And I want you to notice something that just happened, because it is worth catching. You did not have to fix anything to get to this paragraph. You did not clean up first. The thing you were most sure disqualified you is still sitting there, and He has not moved, and neither has the word over you. That is not because it does not matter. It is because He dealt with it Himself, at His own cost, before you ever got here.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, as facts rather than compliments you are fishing for. You are in Christ, and God does not make clerical errors about His own children. Every one of these lines is somebody else's word, written and signed long before you ever doubted it, and His Spirit is what brings it into the room you are standing in. Speak to the doubt, believing and not doubting, the way an ambassador states what the King has already decided. What He does with your feelings about it is His to decide; the fact is settled.

  1. Feeling of a mistake in the paperwork, get out. The Word of God says as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, and God does not make clerical errors about His own children.
  2. Doubt about my adoption, you are answered in the name of Jesus. He gave the power and He did the giving, and what God hands over is not a form I filled in wrongly.
  3. Father, You call me Your child and You are not being polite. I receive the name You gave me, because chosen is a fact and not a compliment.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
