What Has You Does Not Own You

This message is for the habit that answers before you have decided anything

Nine forty at night, and his hand is already on the cupboard door.

That is the part he cannot explain to anyone. Not the thing itself. The fact that he was in the other room, and then he was standing here, and somewhere in between there was supposed to be a decision, and there was not one. Six steps from the chair to the counter. He has never once counted them on the way there. He counts them afterward, every time, lying awake, as though the number will tell him something.

He said last time was the last time. He meant it in a way that people who have never said it do not understand. He did not say it lightly, he said it with his whole chest, at three in the morning, with tears on his face and real repentance in him, and he was not performing and he was not lying and God was not fooled and God was not disappointed either. And then it was Thursday, and it was nine forty, and his hand was on the cupboard door before his mind had come into the room.

What frightens him is not the failure. He has a whole system for the failure. What frightens him is the arriving. The suspicion that the deciding part of him is not actually in charge, and has not been for a long time, and that the man who says never again on Sunday and the hand that moves on Thursday are not talking to each other at all.

You know that hand. It might be a screen, a bottle, a message you send to somebody you should have stopped messaging, a way of speaking to yourself so old you no longer hear it as speech. And you have made the promise. Many times, and honestly. And you have watched your own body arrive somewhere your will never sent it, and you have started to wonder, quietly, in the part of you that does not say things out loud, whether you are actually free at all.

What Has You Does Not Own You

What a trail is, and what a trail is not

I keep land. So let me tell you about a path.

Walk any hillside where the deer come down to water and you can see it from a long way off, a groove in the grass no wider than a boot, going exactly where it has always gone. Nobody surveyed it. Nobody chose it in a meeting. It exists because feet went that way, and then feet went that way again because feet had gone that way, and after a few seasons the slope itself is shaped to it. On a wet morning, if your mind is somewhere else, you will find yourself walking it without ever having decided to. The ground does the deciding by then.

That is what has happened in you. Not a moral collapse. A groove. Something went that way enough times that the slope of your life is now shaped to it, and at nine forty your feet find the trail on their own, and the deciding you keep waiting for happens far too late to matter, at the counter instead of at the chair.

Now hear the thing that will actually set you free, and hear it slowly, because everything turns on it.

A trail worn across a hillside says nothing whatsoever about who owns the hill.

Nothing. It says feet went there. It does not transfer a title, it does not carry authority, it cannot sign anything. Deer have been crossing that slope for forty years and they do not own one inch of it. And you have been walking that groove for years, and it has told you every single time that it owns you, and it has been lying, because a path has never once in the history of the world owned the ground it crosses. And I am not the one telling you that. The Holy Spirit has been saying it over the top of every Thursday you have ever had, and He said it in writing first.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.Romans 6:14

Dominion is an ownership word. It is not about frequency and it is not about how you feel at nine forty on a Thursday. Paul is making a legal statement about who has the deed. And look at the reason he gives, because it is not the one any of us would give. He does not say sin has no dominion over you because you have got stronger. He says it has no dominion because of where you now stand. You are not under law. You are under grace. The ownership changed hands somewhere that had nothing to do with your Thursday. And the Spirit who put that line into Paul's letter is standing at the cupboard door at nine forty holding the deed, entirely unbothered by how many times your feet have crossed that floor.

And I want to say the tender thing here before I go on, because there are people who will use a verse like that to hurt you. What has happened to you is not evidence that you did not believe hard enough. It never was. Nobody worn into a groove is there because their faith was thin. If the burden of your freedom has been sitting on your own shoulders all this time, put it down. It was never yours to carry, and the ones who told you it was, however kindly they meant it, handed you a load God did not make.

Here is what changes everything about tonight. The One who does own you is not a memory and not a doctrine. He is present, and he still does what he has always done, and what he has always done is walk into rooms where something else had established itself and simply take his ground back. He did it in front of crowds and he did it in quiet houses. He is not less able in your kitchen than he was on those roads.

A few verses before that one, Paul tells them to consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. The word he uses is an accounting word. It means to reckon, to count something as true because it is true, the way you write down a figure you have verified rather than one you are hoping for. He is not asking anybody to pretend. He is asking them to agree with a fact that was settled without their help. That is the difference between what I am asking of you tonight and every failed attempt you have made. You have been trying to make a thing true by force. You are being invited to agree with something that is already recorded. Romans 6:11 is where it is recorded, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a recorded fact into a dark kitchen at nine forty instead of leaving it in a letter posted to Rome.

And he is not doing this for people in general. He came to you. The Shepherd in his own story does not stand on the ridge counting what he still has. He leaves the ninety nine on the open hill and goes out after the one, and there is only ever one that story is about, and tonight, in this room, it is you.

The breakthrough

So we are not going to talk about willpower. You have brought more willpower to this than most people bring to anything in their lives, and it broke your heart, because willpower fights the trail and the trail is not the problem. The ownership is the problem, and the ownership is already settled. Settled in the written word, and settled in you by the Spirit who moved in when Christ did and has never once considered leaving over a Thursday.

Here is what is happening right now. You are going to say the name of the thing out loud, once, in a room where God is. Not as a confession that earns anything, and not as a report he needs. As a handover. You are naming what has been walking you, and you are saying out loud that it has no deed.

And then the ground gets new work on it. A groove closes when feet stop going that way and start going another way, and every new step is real ground being made. When nine forty comes, and it will come, you are not going back to zero. You are on new ground with an owner who has never once left the field. Falling on a new path is not the end of the new path. It is a stumble on ground that is yours. Scripture calls that ground grace, and the Spirit is out there turning it over in the dark, doing work on the slope that your willpower was never built to do.

Freedom is not the moment you stop wanting it. Freedom is who owns you while you walk it out, and that has already changed.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, ahead of the moment, while your answer is still yours to give. In Christ you are under grace, and sin shall not have dominion over you, which is a standing rather than a slogan. Speak to the habit that answers before you do, and the outcome is His. Grace was promised to you long before you ever wore that groove, and the Spirit is the breath in your mouth when you say so out loud to an empty room.

  1. Habit that answers before I decide, you do not own me. The Word of God says sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
  2. Automatic yes, get out in the name of Jesus. Having me is not the same thing as owning me, and dominion is a question God has already settled.
  3. Lord, You put me under grace, and grace is what breaks dominion. I answer to You today, and I answer before the habit does.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
