The wall outside the church hall is about knee height and it is wet, and he has been sitting on it for nineteen minutes with his keys closed inside his fist so hard that later there will be a mark.
Inside, through the glass panel in the door, he can see the urn and the biscuits on the trestle table and the backs of about fourteen heads. Somebody laughs. The light comes out across the puddles in a long yellow stripe and stops just short of his shoes.
Fourteen months ago the contract ended. They gave him a card and a plant.
He did not say. That was the whole of it, that first evening. He came home and his wife had made the good dinner because it was Thursday, and their daughter had a thing she needed signed, and there was a moment at about ten past eight when he could have said it in four words, and the moment went past the way a bus goes past, and he did not put his hand out.
So the next morning he left the house at ten past seven, the way he does. And the morning after that.
He knows the retail park now the way he used to know his own building. He knows the hour the cafe fills up and the hour it empties, and which corner has the socket, and the woman on the till knows how he takes it. He applies for things. He genuinely applies for things. Some days he gets to the second stage and his whole chest goes light and he thinks, it is going to end, I am going to walk in tonight and it is going to be a story we tell.
Then it does not end. And every month it does not end, the sentence he did not say gets heavier, because now it is not four words anymore. Now it is fourteen months of a man leaving the house at ten past seven, and there is no version of saying it that does not also mean saying that.
That is the part nobody tells you about, and this is where I stop talking about him.
Because yours may be nothing like his. Yours might be one thing you said about your qualifications at an interview eleven years ago. It might be what you told your mother about why you stopped going. It might be a whole second version of your week that you have been narrating to somebody who loves you.
But you know the shape of it. It started as one sentence, and it was almost certainly a small one, and there is a decent chance you said it to protect somebody. And then it needed a second sentence to hold it upright. And a third. And now you are not telling a lie anymore, you are running one, and it has an upkeep, and it does not take days off, and you cannot hand in your notice because handing in your notice is the confession.
And so you sit on a wet wall with the light nearly reaching your shoes, in the car park of a building full of people who like you, and you are not in a single room you walk into anymore.

The truth is not what it will cost you. It is what it is already costing you.
I want to say something to you before anything else, and I want you to let it in. It is not my kindness talking. John 8:32 has been holding this open for the whole nineteen minutes you have been sitting on that wall, and His Spirit carries it out past the glass panel to where you actually are.
You are not a liar in the way that word gets thrown around. You are a person who said one thing to get through one afternoon, and then had to keep that thing alive, and it grew, and by the time you understood what you were carrying it was already bigger than you were.
Nobody plans this. There is no evening where somebody sits down with a cup of tea and decides to spend fourteen months in a retail park. It happens one Thursday at ten past eight, in the space of about four seconds, and then arithmetic does the rest.
And the arithmetic is genuinely cruel, so let us name it out loud. Every day it stands, the cost of taking it back goes up. Which means every day of surviving makes tomorrow harder, and the surviving has been done extremely well, and that is exactly why a wet wall is where tonight finds you. It is not weakness. It is the shape of the thing itself.
And it is lonely in one very precise way. You are in the room and never in the room. Somebody asks you a warm and ordinary question and half of you is answering and the other half is checking the answer against the file. You laugh a beat late. You have stopped inviting people. You have become extremely good at moving a conversation, and nobody has any idea, and that is the loneliest sentence in your whole life.
Now hear what Jesus said, and hear who is doing the work in it. He said it to people who were quietly running versions of their own. It was written down, it stayed, and the Spirit has kept it current every single day since.
And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.John 8:32
Look at the grammar, because the grammar is the mercy.
The truth is the subject of that sentence. The truth does the setting free. You are not the one prising anything open. You are the object of the verb, and I want that to land on you, because for fourteen months you have been running the numbers on whether you are strong enough to do this, and the sentence never once asked you to be. That is Scripture's own grammar and not my kindness dressed up. The Spirit is what makes a grammar lesson land in the same chest that goes light at a second stage interview.
Jesus did not say, and you will confess, and your courage will set you free. He did not say, and you will find the right evening, and your timing will set you free. The truth is not a weight you have to lift. It is a person, standing in the room already, and He does the freeing.
And notice the word know. Not know the facts. You have never had a facts problem. You could recite every detail of this thing in the dark, forwards and backwards, which is precisely why you cannot sleep. The word there means to know something by being with it, the way you know a house you have lived in. What you have never had is the truth for company. You have had it as a threat.
Four verses on He says it again, and He says it wider: if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed. Not on probation. Not free with conditions attached. Free, and the word He uses for it is the one you use about a thing that is finished. The Spirit who was breathing on that page in John 8 is breathing on it here, in a car park, at nineteen minutes and counting.
So hear this, and take it slowly, because it is not the thing you have been bracing for.
God has known the whole story from the first four seconds. There has never been a single hour when He was working from the version you gave everybody else. You have not been hiding from Him. He has been sitting on the wet wall the entire time, in the dark, on the outside of the light, with you, and He has not once got up and gone in without you. That is not sentiment. The Spirit has been the company on those cold bricks for fourteen months, and John 8:32 is what He has been saying there the whole time.
Which means the truth is not something you are about to hand Him. It is something He has been holding, gently, at the other end, waiting for you to notice it was never only in your hands.
Freedom is not the reward for saying it well. Freedom is the truth doing what truth does the moment it gets any air at all.
There is more room in front of you than you think. Not an easy road. A wide one, with your own name on it, and nothing left to check.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, alone, before you say anything to anybody else. This is the rehearsal that matters. In Christ you have standing to speak the truth even where it costs, because your place with God is not what the truth threatens. Scripture is the ground under your feet while you say it, and you do not walk into the telling by yourself: the Spirit gets there first. Speak, and His timing for the rest of it is His own.
- Lie I have kept going, you have grown too big for me and you are not bigger than the truth. The Word of God says ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, and free is on the other side of said.
- Fear of what the telling costs, get out in the name of Jesus. The carrying is costing more, and the truth is the only thing in this that sets anybody free.
- Lord, You are the Truth and You are with me in the telling. I bring it into the light, because light is where You do Your best work.
