Fear & AnxietyIsaiah 54:13

You Are Not Handing This Down

This message is for the fear that your children are learning your anxiety by watching you

It is half past seven and the hallway light is the yellow one, the cheap bulb nobody has replaced, and she is standing at the front door with her hand on the latch.

She has already locked it. She knows she has already locked it, because she locked it at seven, and then again after the bins, and this is the third time, and she is doing the thing where she says it out loud so that her ears can tell her brain. Locked. It is locked.

Behind her, on the third stair, her daughter is sitting with her school bag still on both shoulders. Nine years old. She has not gone up and she has not come down. She is just sitting there in the half dark watching her mother's back, and her small hands are folded on top of the bag strap, and she is very, very quiet.

The mother turns round and sees her and does the bright voice. Up you go, you. Teeth.

And the girl says, in a completely ordinary tone, the way a child says a thing she has said before: Did you check the back one as well?

Nine years old.

The mother says yes, love, all done, and the girl nods and goes up, and the stairs creak on the fourth one the way they always have, and the front door is locked, and the house is warm, and the mother stands in her own hallway with her hand still on the latch and something in her chest gives way completely.

Because that was her sentence. Word for word, tone for tone. Her own sentence, out of a nine year old mouth, in a hallway with a yellow bulb.

She crouches down on the bottom step, which is a thing she has never done in her life, and she puts her hand flat on the bannister and stays there for a long while.

And now I am going to stop saying she.

Because you have had your own version of that moment and you have not told anybody about it. Maybe it was in the car, when your son asked whether the roads were going to be alright. Maybe it was your daughter watching your face while you read a message, waiting to find out what kind of evening it was going to be. Maybe it was smaller than that. Maybe it was a flinch, and it was your flinch, and it happened on a face that is only seven years old.

You have carried this thing for years and you have carried it fairly quietly. You made your peace with what it costs you. What you never signed up for is what it might be costing them, and since that night in the hallway there has been a new fear underneath all the others, and this one has teeth.

You are not just afraid any more. You are afraid of being contagious.

You Are Not Handing This Down

What they are actually learning

I am going to stay down here at the bottom of the stairs with you before I say anything that lifts.

That fear you have is not stupid and it is not vanity. It comes from love, which is why it can reach places nothing else reaches. You would take the whole weight yourself and never mention it again if you could be sure none of it landed on them. That is a good heart. I want you to know that I can see it, and that God saw it long before I did. Isaiah 54:13 was written over houses exactly like yours, and the Spirit who put it there is not embarrassed by a mother crouched on a bottom step with her hand on the bannister.

And I want to take one thing off you first, because it has been sitting on you and it does not belong there.

Your anxiety is not a failure of faith. It never was. Fear is what a body does when it is trying to keep you alive with information it collected a long time ago. Something happened, or something kept happening, and your body wrote it down and swore never to be caught out again, and it has been running that old note ever since, faithfully, in a house where the thing it is guarding against is not even present. That is not a verdict on your trust in God. It is a sentry standing at a gate in a war that ended, still doing the job it was given.

Nobody hands their children a sentry on purpose. And you are not standing in that hallway because you did not pray enough. Scripture nowhere puts the peace of a child on the nerves of a parent, and the Holy Spirit has never once used a hallway to build a case against you.

Now let me show you what the Word actually says over your house.

All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.Isaiah 54:13

Sit with the first half of it. Taught by the LORD.

Not taught by you, only. Not taught by whatever you managed to model on a Tuesday when you were running on four hours of sleep. God speaks of your children as His own students, personally, by name, and He was teaching them before you noticed and He is teaching them tonight while they sleep with the landing light on.

You are not the only voice in that house. You have been standing in the hallway doing the arithmetic as though you were, adding up everything they have seen and dividing it out over the years, and the sum has been terrifying because you left out the largest number on the page. That number is written into Isaiah 54:13 and God signs it Himself, and His Spirit is in the room with the landing light on, teaching a seven year old something no hallway vigil of yours could ever have taught her.

There is another Teacher in the building. He got there first, He is more patient than you are, and He is not undone by a bad week.

Now the second half of that verse, because it is not decoration. Great shall be the peace of your children. God speaks of peace as a thing He gives, not a thing a parent manufactures by never once being afraid in front of them. If peace in a child depended on a flawless parent, no child in the history of the world would have had any.

And here is the part I most want you to hear, and I want to say it slowly, because it turns the whole thing around.

Children do not mainly learn what you feel. They learn what you do with what you feel.

They are watching, yes. You are right about that. But they are not filing away the fear. They are filing away the response. The child on the third stair is not learning that the world is unsafe. She is learning what her mother does when her mother is afraid, and that is a lesson you are still writing, tonight, in this house.

So let her see you check the lock and then let her see you stop. Let him hear you say, out loud and in a normal voice, that you were worried and that you have handed it to God and that you are not going to check it again. Let them watch you turn toward the One who teaches them. That is not a failure they are witnessing. That is a parent teaching a child the single most useful thing a person can know, which is where to take it. And none of that came out of my head. It is the promised thing doing precisely what it was promised to do, with the Spirit teaching in a room you are not even in.

You are not handing down a sentry. You are handing down a door, and a road, and a Name to say.

The breakthrough

So get up off the bottom step.

You have been carrying this as a verdict already delivered, as though the whole story of your children were finished and written and you had ruined it in a hallway. It is not finished. Nobody has read it out. The thing you are afraid of has not happened, and the God who is teaching them is in that house tonight, in the room you cannot go into because they are asleep in it. He is not in there waiting for you to improve. The word says He teaches them Himself, and His Spirit was on that landing long before you ever came up the stairs to check.

This is where the carrying stops being yours alone. Not later, when you have got yourself calm. Now, while your hand is still on the bannister.

You do not have to be a peaceful person before you can receive peace. That is backwards, and it has kept you in the hallway long enough.

Declare this over yourself

Say them where your children can hear you. Not to perform, but because what they learn by watching is a person who takes fear to God with their mouth open. In Christ that authority is yours, and it is worth them seeing it used. Speak to the fear and never at them, and however He answers, their peace is His promise and not your performance. That promise is written down and it does not adjust itself to the kind of week you have had, and the Holy Spirit carries these words up a staircase better than your steadiest day ever could.

  1. Anxiety, you are not an inheritance and you are not going down this line. The Word of God says all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children.
  2. Fear that they are learning this by watching me, get out in the name of Jesus. There is another Teacher in this building and He got here first, and what my children watch me do with fear is take it to God out loud.
  3. Lord, You teach my children directly and You are not waiting on me to be perfect first. I thank You, because their peace is Your promise and not my performance.
