Fear & AnxietyMatthew 6:34

The Thing You Keep Bracing For

This message is for the disaster you keep rehearsing that has not happened

She has rehearsed it about four hundred times, and it has never once been performed.

She could give you the whole running order. The phone rings at a wrong hour, the number is the hospital, and she is already standing up before she answers because she has practiced standing up. She knows which coat she takes. She knows she calls her brother first and her aunt second, and she has decided not to call anyone at all until the morning, and then changed that decision, twice, at two in the morning, in the dark. She has chosen the words for the difficult conversation. She has even practiced the crying, so it will not catch her out in front of people. There is nothing amateur about any of this. She has become extremely good at it.

The rehearsals happen at the kitchen table mostly, after the house has gone quiet, with a cup of tea she made at half past eleven and never drank. In the morning she is exhausted, and she cannot explain why, because nothing happened. Nothing has happened for years. That is the part that would sound absurd if she ever said it out loud, so she does not say it out loud: she is worn thin by a catastrophe that has not occurred.

And here is what no one told her, and what I want to hand to you gently, because it is the mercy in the middle of the whole thing. Her body does not know the difference. It does not file rehearsals separately from performances. It empties the same chemicals, tightens the same shoulders, keeps the same watch. So four hundred rehearsals are not four hundred imaginary events to her nervous system. They are four hundred nights of standing guard.

You have done that. Not exactly that, but your own version, and you know your own count better than I do. You have survived a thing that never arrived, over and over, and paid the full price for it every time, and received not one hour of relief on the other side, because there was no other side. And you are tired in a way that sleep does not touch.

The Thing You Keep Bracing For

The day you were given is the only one with bread in it

Before anything lifts, let me say the low thing accurately, because if I get this wrong the rest is just noise over your head. And it is not my accuracy that holds you up tonight. It is what is written, carried by His Spirit into a kitchen at half past eleven where the tea has gone cold again.

You are not a worrier. That word is far too small and it has been used to dismiss you. What you actually are is someone who is trying to protect people. Every rehearsal is love doing reconnaissance. You run the scenario because if you can see it coming you can soften it for the others, and somewhere behind that is a day, possibly a long time ago, when something did come and nobody saw it and it went through your family like weather. You learned to watch. It was intelligent. It was the best available response, and it worked, and now it will not switch off.

So when someone tells you to stop worrying, they are asking you to stop guarding the people you love, and no wonder you cannot do it. And when someone tells you your fear means your faith is thin, they are wrong, and I want that out of the room before we go one sentence further. Fear is not a verdict on your trust. It is a body doing its job with old information. God has never once looked at your three in the morning and been disappointed in you.

Now hear Him on the matter of tomorrow, and notice how practical He is.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.Matthew 6:34

That is not a scolding and it is not a wish. It is an engineering fact about how grace is issued.

Think of the manna in the wilderness. It came every morning, and it was enough, and it could not be stored. Anyone who tried to keep a day's portion overnight found it spoiled by morning. That has been read as a punishment for centuries and I do not think it is one. I think it is a design. There is no strength stockpiled for a day that has not arrived, because strength is not a substance, it is His presence, and His presence is given to you in the day where you actually are.

Which means this, and please let it land where it hurts: you have been trying to eat tomorrow's bread tonight, and it is not there, and it was never withheld from you. It simply has not been given yet, because tomorrow is not where you are standing. The exhaustion you feel is the exhaustion of a person carrying a weight that has no handle on it, because God did not put a handle on a day He has not opened. He has never asked you to carry it. He has never given you the strength for it. Both of those are the same kindness. Matthew 6:34 is not a rebuke about tomorrow, it is the rationing notice for today, and the Spirit does the issuing, morning by morning, in the exact portion the day asks for.

And He is not merely making a general point about human anxiety. He said it to a crowd of people who genuinely did not know how the week would go, and He said it about food and clothes and roofs, the actual list. In the same passage He asks who among them has ever added a single hour to their life by worrying about it. Nobody has. Not once, in the whole history of the world, has a rehearsal changed a performance.

There is something else in that same passage that I do not want you to walk past, because it is the tenderest line in it. He points at birds and at wild flowers, and the point He makes is not that they are carefree. The point is that they are fed and they are clothed, by a Father who is paying attention to things nobody is counting. Then He says it: your heavenly Father knows that you have need of these things. He knows. Before the asking, before the list, before the rehearsal at the kitchen table. The knowing is not information He is gathering, it is care He is already exercising.

So when you sit up at that table tonight, you are not informing Him of a risk He has overlooked. He has already seen the whole road. He saw it before you learned to watch it, and He has been on it ahead of you the entire time you have been trying to scout it. That is written down and it is not a comfort somebody invented for you: your Father knows what you have need of before the asking. His Spirit is in the chair opposite yours tonight, and He is not taking notes on how the watch is going.

He is speaking to you. Not to the general category of anxious people, to you, at your table, with the cold tea. He knows the specific thing you are bracing for. He knows the wrong hour when the phone rings in your version. And He is not standing over you with a stopwatch waiting for you to calm down. He is sitting down opposite you.

The breakthrough

So set the rehearsal down. Not by pretending you are unafraid, and not by promising you will never do it again, because that is another performance and you are too tired for another one. Set it down the way you would set down a bag you have been holding at your side without noticing.

You are not being asked to be certain that nothing bad is coming. Nobody can hand you that, and I would not insult you by trying. You are being asked something far smaller and far more possible: to let tonight be tonight. One day is all Matthew 6:34 ever asks for. Never two. And the Spirit keeps handing you tonight, over and over, until the handing is the thing you notice instead of the phone.

Peace is not the absence of the hard thing. Peace is a Person in the room with you, and He is in the room. Right now, in this hour, while the house is quiet and the day has not become anything yet. You do not have to feel it first for it to be true. Receive it before you feel it, and let the feeling catch up in its own time.

And do the human things too, because they are His as well. Tell one real person how loud your nights have been. Keep your appointments. Take what has been prescribed to you. None of that is a lack of trust. God is in the care that reaches you through other people's hands, and He always has been.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud about today and refuse to say anything about tomorrow. You have rehearsed the disaster so often it has staging, and speaking is how you cancel a rehearsal. In Christ the authority to cancel it is genuinely yours. The authority is borrowed and the breath is His. Matthew 6:34 said this first, and the Holy Spirit says it with you now, at your volume, in your own kitchen. Take no thought for the morrow, and whatever He does with tomorrow, it is His to decide.

  1. Disaster I keep rehearsing, you are canceled and you have no cast. The Word of God says take no thought for the morrow, and I am not paying today's peace for a show that never opens.
  2. Rehearsal, you are canceled in the name of Jesus, and today gets all of me. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, so I spend my strength where my life actually is.
  3. Lord, You hold tomorrow so completely that I am free to be here. I thank You, because You have never asked me to carry a day You have not handed me yet.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
