Fear & AnxietyIsaiah 41:10

Fear Told You a Future That Is Not Coming

This message is for the future your fear has already written for you

The tea went cold about an hour ago. He has not noticed, because he is not in the kitchen. He is in a meeting on Thursday that has not happened yet.

He has run it four times now. In the first version he stays calm and says the reasonable thing and they see sense. In the second version they have already decided before he walks in. In the third version his voice does that thing it does and he hears himself sounding desperate, and the fourth version is the worst one, so he keeps going back to it, the way your tongue keeps going back to the sore tooth. He has scripted their faces. He has scripted the walk to the car afterwards. He knows what he will say to his wife, and how she will look at him when he says it.

None of this has occurred. Thursday is three days away and the meeting may be moved and the man on the other side of the table may say something no version of this evening has imagined. It does not matter. He has already lived it four times, and he is exhausted, and the tea is cold, and the phone is face down because he is afraid of what it might say.

You know the chair he is sitting in. You have been sitting in it for a while now, at three in the morning or eleven at night or in a supermarket car park with the engine off. So let me sit down across from you, and let me say the first true thing: you are not weak, and this is not a character flaw. Something has been writing a future for you in enormous detail, and you have been reading it as though it were the news.

Fear Told You a Future That Is Not Coming

Fear writes in detail, and God speaks in the present tense

Before we go up, we go down, and we go down honestly, because I am not interested in handing you a bright sentence to hold over a pit I refused to look into.

Here is what it actually costs you, and nobody adds it up out loud.

You are tired in a way that sleeping does not fix, because you have not stopped working. Your body has been running the drill all night and it does not know that the emergency is imaginary. You have started avoiding things: the letter you have not opened, the appointment you keep rescheduling, the phone call from the number you recognize. You are short with people you love, and afterwards you feel ashamed, and the shame goes on the same pile. You have caught yourself managing everyone else's mood so nothing unpredictable can happen, and you have got very, very good at it, and it is wearing you out.

And there is the private part. Somewhere in the last year you began to suspect that this is just who you are now. That the version of you who slept, and made plans, and answered the phone without checking who it was, is a person you used to be. Hear the answer to that before the suspicion sets any harder: you are not a person who used to be. What is written over you did not change during the worst year of it, and the Spirit has been in that chair with you at three in the morning every single time, whether or not anything in the room felt like company.

I want to be careful and gentle here, so I will say it once and clearly. This is not a shortage of faith. There is no line I will draw in this whole message that ends with you being the reason. If somebody has already suggested to you that a stronger believer would not feel this way, put that down, because it is not from God and it is not true, and it has never once quieted anyone.

Now watch what fear actually does, because once you see the mechanism you cannot unsee it.

Fear does not deal in maybes. Fear writes in high definition. It gives you the room, the lighting, the exact sentence, the expression on their face. That level of detail is not evidence, it is a technique, and it is the reason the thing feels like foresight. But notice what fear never puts in the script. It never writes God into the scene. It never writes in the help that arrives, the person who unexpectedly stands up for you, the door that opens sideways, the thing you find you have the strength to survive. Fear's future is always fully furnished and always empty of grace.

And that is the tell, because grace is only ever issued for the day it is needed. Fear cannot write the Spirit into a scene, because the Spirit is not information, and Scripture keeps putting Him in the room at exactly the hour fear had scheduled the collapse.

Remember how God fed a nation in the desert. Bread on the ground every morning, enough for that day, and what they hoarded overnight spoiled. It was not stinginess. It was training. He was teaching a people who had lived on nothing that they could not stockpile Him, and that arriving at tomorrow with nothing in hand was not the same as arriving alone.

So when you visit Thursday tonight, you go with no supplies. Of course it is unbearable. You are standing in a day God has not yet stocked, without the grace that will be there when the day actually comes. You are not seeing the future. You are visiting an unfurnished room and calling it a forecast. The word God gave that nation in the desert was daily and it has not been amended since. What makes tomorrow's portion unnecessary tonight is the Spirit, here, in the hour you are actually standing in.

Hear what He says instead, and hear the tense of it.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.Isaiah 41:10

I am with you. Not I have a plan for the situation. Not I will explain later. The first gift is presence, in the present, right where your feet actually are.

Two things have to move for that to reach you, so let me move them.

The first is the quiet suspicion that God stopped doing this sort of thing. That He steadied people in ancient deserts and now leaves us to our own coping. But the peace He hands out was never a historical event; it is a Person, and He is not retired. Jesus was asleep in a boat that experienced sailors thought was sinking, and the peace was in the boat before the water was calm. He is still doing that. He does it in kitchens now.

The second is the one that will trip you at the last step. You accept that He gives peace, and you assume you are the exception, because your situation is genuinely uncertain and the danger is genuinely real. Here is the thing about Isaiah's words: they were not spoken to people whose troubles turned out to be imaginary. They were spoken to exiles. The threat was real and He did not begin by promising the threat away. He began by promising Himself. His Spirit still carries it into rooms where the danger is entirely real, and Isaiah 41:10 went to exiles rather than to people who were imagining things.

You do not have to be certain about tomorrow to have Him tonight.

And notice one more thing about how He speaks to frightened people, because it changes what you are listening for. He does not usually begin by explaining. He begins by drawing near. Fear wants information, and it will tell you that if you only knew the outcome you could rest, and that is not true and you have proved it. You have received good news before and been anxious again by the evening, because the anxiety was never actually about the information.

What settles a person is not a forecast. It is company. Scripture never once tried to settle a frightened person with information, which is why the promise opens with I am with you, and it is the Spirit, not a better set of facts, who makes that company something you feel in your own kitchen.

Jesus said something about this that gets quoted so often it has gone smooth, so let me turn it over for you. He said not to be anxious about tomorrow, because tomorrow will look after its own anxieties, and that today has enough trouble of its own. Read that last part again. He is not saying today is fine. He is saying today has enough. He fully expects there to be trouble in it. What He will not have you do is stack tomorrow's on top of a day that is already carrying its share, because that is a load nobody was built to lift and grace was never issued for it.

The breakthrough

So take the pen out of fear's hand. Not by arguing with it. You have tried that, at three in the morning, and you lost, because you cannot out think a thing that never sleeps.

Do it this way instead. Say out loud, or under your breath, the day you are actually in. Not Thursday. Tonight. This chair, this table, this cold cup, this hour. That is the only place where God says I am with you, because I am is a present tense word and He will not meet you in a day He has not made. I am is how He gave His own name in Scripture. Because the Spirit delivers it, a present tense word arrives as company rather than as grammar.

And then let Him be in it. Not later, when you have calmed down enough to deserve it. Now, shaking, with the phone still face down. The peace is not the reward for stopping the fear. The peace is what stops it.

If there is a real thing to be dealt with on Thursday, you will deal with it on Thursday, and He will be there when you arrive, with what you need for that day. Tell one human being you trust what tonight has been like. Keep whatever care you already have in place. And let tonight be tonight.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in the present tense, about the day you are actually in. Fear has narrated your future for months and you have listened without once answering. You are in Christ, so you have every right to answer it in your own voice. Speak to the mountain, and leave the outcome to Him, who holds the only future that is actually coming. The right to answer is not confidence, it is Scripture, and the Spirit is what puts a steady voice in a shaking body.

  1. Fear, you are not a prophet and I am not your congregation. The Word of God says fear thou not, for I am with thee, and the God who is with me holds the only future that is actually coming.
  2. Future that fear wrote for me, you are canceled in the name of Jesus. My tomorrow is written by the God who says be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and He signs it Himself.
  3. Lord, You uphold me with the right hand of Your righteousness right now. I am held today, so I am not renting tomorrow from fear.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
