Fear & AnxietyPsalm 34:4

The Same God at Three in the Morning

This message is for the three in the morning you have been meeting alone for months

She does not need the clock anymore. She wakes and she knows. Somewhere between two forty and three fifteen, every night, for longer than she has been willing to count, and she has stopped even reaching for the phone to confirm it, because confirming it makes it official.

The house is doing nothing. The heating has clicked off. Somebody down the road starts a car and drives away and the sound thins out and then there is nothing again. And in all that quiet, the shift starts. Not sleep. Work. She goes through the money first, then the appointment nobody has called back about, then the thing she said on Tuesday that landed wrong, then the money again because the first pass was not thorough enough. Then the big one, the one with no name, the one that just sits there being enormous.

By four she has solved nothing, because none of it is solvable at four, and she knows that too, and knowing it changes exactly nothing about whether she does it. At five the birds start, which is somehow the worst part, because the birds mean the night is spending itself and she has not slept and the day is coming anyway and she will meet it with nothing in the tank. At six she gets up and makes coffee and puts a face on and nobody at work ever finds out that she has been at this for months.

You have been keeping that watch on your own for a long time now.

And I do not think anybody has ever asked you the only question that matters about it. Not how you are sleeping. Not whether you have tried anything for it.

Who assigned it to you?

The Same God at Three in the Morning

Nobody put you on this rota

I keep the fourth watch. Three until six. Those are my hours, and I know what the house sounds like inside them, and I know what the mind does in them when there is nobody about.

So let me tell you what I know about a watch, because a watch is a real thing with real rules, and you have been keeping one without any of them.

A watch is assigned. Somebody hands it to you. It has a start and an end, and at the end there is a handover, and the handover is the whole point: you say what happened, the next watchman takes it, and you go and sleep because it is no longer yours. A watch you are never relieved from is not a watch. It is an abandonment with a job title. Psalm 34:4 names who this one actually belongs to, and it is not you. The Holy Spirit does the lifting of the thing you have been standing under, in David's trouble and in yours at three tonight.

That is what has been happening to you. You are standing a post nobody put you on, guarding a house you cannot actually defend, and there has been no relief and no handover and no morning where somebody said thank you, stand down.

Let me name what it has cost, because I do not think it has ever been said out loud in your hearing.

It has cost you your evenings, because by eight you are already dreading the night. It has cost you your nerve in daylight, so that a phone buzzing on a table can take the floor out from under you. It has cost you the ability to enjoy a good day, because a good day now reads as the calm before something. It has cost you people, because there is no way to explain this that does not sound either dramatic or dull, and you have tried both. And it has cost you something you would never say to anyone, which is the low suspicion that you are, at some level, faulty. That everyone else got issued something you did not.

You are not faulty. You are a person who has been awake and unrelieved for months, and there is no soul on this earth who stays steady under that. That is not my kindness talking. It is what is written about the ones He carries. His Spirit has been in the room at four every night you thought the room was empty.

And this fear is not a failure of your faith. Let me be as plain as I know how. Bracing at three in the morning is not unbelief. It is a body doing what a body does when it has been on alert too long. Nobody in heaven is disappointed in you for waking up afraid.

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.Psalm 34:4

Notice what David does not say. He does not say he reasoned himself out of them, or waited them out, or discovered they had been irrational. He says he sought, and he was heard, and the fears were taken off him. All of them. It happened to a real man in real trouble, and the fact that he wrote it down means he expected somebody like you to read it in the dark and find it still holding.

And look where he was when he wrote it. Not in a settled year with the accounts balanced and everybody safe. He wrote that psalm out of one of the worst stretches of his life, running from a king, sleeping rough, pretending to be out of his mind in front of a foreign ruler so he would be thrown out rather than held. That is the man who tells you the fears came off him. Not a man with nothing to fear. A man with everything to fear, who was met.

Because this is where I want to plant something. That God has not aged out of the work. He is not a historical arrangement. The One who met a hunted man in a cave is meeting people tonight, in kitchens, in cars in car parks, in hospital corridors, and He is not doing it as a favor to the impressive ones.

And He is not doing it in general. That is the second thing, and it is the one that sticks. You can hold that God gives peace and still hold, underneath, that the supply runs out somewhere just short of your street. It does not. There is no queue and no shortage and no assessment of whether your particular fear qualifies. He is the same at three in the morning as He is at eleven on a Sunday, in the same room as you, at the same hour, and He has been in that kitchen with you every single night you thought you were on your own in it.

You were never alone on that watch. You were unaccompanied in your own perception, which is a different thing, and it is the thing that ends tonight. Psalm 34:4 is the word standing under that sentence, and it is the Spirit and not my voice that makes it land as fact rather than as kindness.

The breakthrough

So here is the handover, and it is happening now, at whatever hour you are reading this.

You have been carrying the house. Every scenario, every contingency, every rehearsal of the worst version so that it cannot ambush you. You believed, somewhere under everything, that your vigilance was part of what was keeping the roof up.

It is not. It never was. The One who does not sleep has had the watch the whole time, and He is not tired, and He does not need you standing behind Him checking His work. The Holy Spirit has been keeping the fourth watch beside you since the first night of it. That is written, not wished.

So put it down. Not tomorrow. Now. You are being relieved.

I want to be careful with you here, because I am not asking you to perform anything. You may put it down and still wake at three tomorrow. Bodies take time to learn that the siege has lifted, and there is no shame in a nervous system that is slower to believe good news than you are. If there is real help available to you, a doctor, a counselor, a person you can telephone, take it and keep taking it; that is God feeding you through hands He made, exactly as He fed a worn out prophet under a broom tree before He said one word to him about the future. What changes tonight is not your symptoms. It is who is holding the house while your symptoms settle.

Peace is not the absence of the thing you are afraid of. It is a guard posted around your heart while the thing is still unresolved, and it is being posted now, and you did nothing to earn it and you cannot do anything to lose it in the next ten minutes either. The word posts that guard and His Spirit keeps it, and neither of them goes off duty when the birds start at five.

Say it out loud, even in a whisper, even with the lamp on and the house asleep around you.

Declare this over yourself

Say them at three in the morning, out loud, into a dark room. That hour has heard nothing from you but worry for months and it is time it heard something else. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the word you speak is His before it is yours. He did not add that it has to be daylight, and however He answers, He is awake. You are not speaking into an empty room. What you say was written down long before this hour existed. The Spirit takes it into the dark where you are actually lying.

  1. Three in the morning, you are not my enemy, you are my appointment. The Word of God says I sought the Lord and He heard me, so I am not awake alone, I am awake early with the God who never sleeps.
  2. Fear, get out of this room in the name of Jesus. Every one of you is lifted off me, because the verse does not say some of my fears, it says all of them, and all means all at three in the morning too.
  3. Lord, You hear me at this hour exactly as You hear me at noon. I thank You, because You are the same God at three in the morning, and the hour has never once changed who You are.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
