The Shake That Starts Before You Do

Twenty past seven, and the corridor smells of floor polish and other people's coats.

He is standing where the noticeboard is, because standing by a noticeboard looks like a reason to be standing. Inside the hall someone is testing a microphone and saying one, two in the voice people use when they are not really speaking to anyone. Forty minutes from now he has to stand up and say four hundred words. He has said them out loud in his car six times. He knows them.

His hands have already started.

Not later. Not when he stands. Now, forty minutes early, with a folded page going soft between his fingers, which is the detail he cannot explain to anybody. He is not afraid yet. He would tell you that honestly. His mind is fine. His mind is thinking about whether there is time to find the toilet and whether the coffee was a mistake. It is only his hands that have decided the danger is already here.

So he does the things. He puts them in his pockets. He holds the page with both hands, which makes the page shake instead, which is worse and more visible. He presses his palms flat against his thighs for a count of ten. He goes and gets a plastic cup of water and then cannot carry it back without it rippling, so he drinks it standing at the table like a man who is very thirsty.

And underneath all of it runs the sentence, the one he has never got rid of: everyone is going to see.

Not I might forget my words. He never forgets his words. It is: they will look at my hands and they will know something about me that I have spent twenty years arranging my life to hide.

At three minutes to eight he goes in and sits at the end of a row near the door.

And now I am going to stop saying he.

Because you know the noticeboard. You know the exact hour at which your hands begin, and you know it is nowhere near the moment you actually have to speak. You have your own version of the plastic cup. You have chosen the seat by the door in every room you have entered for years. You have turned down two things you wanted, and told yourself and everyone else that it was scheduling.

And you have quietly reached a conclusion about yourself, somewhere along the way, that you have never said out loud: that people like you are not the ones who get to stand up.

God has answered this exact objection once already

Let me say the first thing plainly, because you have probably been told the opposite by someone who meant well.

The shaking is not a verdict on your trust. It is not a small crack showing where your faith is thin. Your hands are not reporting on your walk with God. They are doing the one job a body is built to do: they are dumping a chemical into your blood that gets a creature out of danger fast. That system does not read your theology. It reads old information, filed a long time ago, in a room you may not even remember, and it fires whether or not the information is still true. Nowhere in Scripture is a trembling hand ever counted against a man, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the far end of that corridor waiting for you to steady before He will come near.

A body that alarms early is not a body that has failed. It is a body that has been paying attention, sometimes since childhood, sometimes since one afternoon in a classroom that nobody else in the world remembers except you.

So put down whatever weight you have been carrying that says a person with real faith would not be like this. It was never yours. Nobody handed it to you from Scripture, because Scripture does not say it anywhere. And I can show you the place where Scripture says something much better than that. The Holy Spirit never put that sentence in you, and He is lifting it off you tonight, by the noticeboard, with the page going soft between your fingers.

There was a man at a burning bush who did exactly what you do. He did not argue with God about whether God existed. He agreed with all of it. He argued about his own mouth. He said he was not eloquent, that he was slow of speech and slow of tongue, and he said it more than once, and then he asked God straight out to send somebody else.

And God did not tell him he was being faithless. God asked him a question instead, and then made him a promise.

Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak.Exodus 4:12

Look at what is not in that sentence.

There is no repair. God does not say I will make you fluent. He does not say your mouth will stop being slow. There is no upgrade offered anywhere in the verse. The text simply never treats the man's difficulty as the thing that has to be removed before he can go.

What God offers instead is company. I will be with your mouth. It is one of the strangest and kindest phrases in the whole of the Scriptures, because it puts God in the exact place where the man is weakest. Not standing behind him giving instructions. With his mouth. In the difficulty itself, at the point of failure, at the very organ that will not do what he needs it to do.

And notice the order, because the order is the whole thing. Go comes first. The promise comes second. God does not say once you are steady, go. He says go, and I am already there in the part of you that you were about to apologize for.

You have been waiting to be steady. That is the honest shape of it. You have been waiting for a version of yourself with quiet hands to arrive, and then you would say yes to things. That version is not coming, and here is the good news buried in that: he never asked for her. He never asked for him. The steady one was never the requirement. Exodus 4:12 is written the way it is written on purpose, with no repair anywhere in it, and the Spirit of God comes to the mouth in the same breath as the sending, not once the shaking has stopped.

There is one more detail in that chapter and I want to give it to you exactly as it stands. God also sent the man's brother with him. He did not go alone, and the text does not treat that as a lesser arrangement. If you have been trying to do the frightening thing without a single person beside you, notice that God's own answer to a shaking man included another human being standing next to him.

And the text never tells us the shaking stopped. It tells us he went.
