Fear & AnxietyIsaiah 26:3

Peace Is a Person, Not a Mood

This message is for the peace you cannot manufacture no matter how hard you try

The fridge hums. That is the first thing she hears every night, and by now she hates that hum with a personal hatred, because it is the sound of the hour when the house has gone quiet and her head has not.

Three eleven. She checked. She always checks, then regrets checking, then does the arithmetic anyway: four hours and nineteen minutes until the alarm, minus however long it takes to fall asleep, and now the counting itself is keeping her awake, which she knows, which does not help.

So she gets up. Kettle on, because there is a ritual, and the ritual is supposed to work. Four counts in, seven counts hold, eight counts out. The app with the rain sounds. The lavender thing from the shop. The list on the back of an envelope, because writing it down is meant to empty the head, except tonight the writing produced two more items she had not thought of yet. She sits at the kitchen table with both hands around a mug that has already gone cold, and she does the honest maths of her life at three in the morning, which is the worst possible hour to do it, and she reaches the same conclusion she reaches every night.

I am doing everything right and I still cannot feel calm.

Now put the mug down, because I am talking to you.

You have tried. Nobody can say you have not tried. You have breathed, journalled, prayed the verse, taped the verse to the mirror, made the boundary, deleted the app, taken the walk, and you have done it faithfully, and somewhere around the fourth week you started to suspect that everybody else got issued something at birth that you did not get. A setting. A dial. Some internal thermostat that other people can adjust and yours is painted shut.

You are trying to manufacture peace. That is the whole trouble, and it is not your fault that nobody told you.

Peace Is a Person, Not a Mood

You cannot make what was only ever given

Let me say the low part first, because I am not going to lift you off a floor I refuse to stand on with you.

Anxiety is exhausting in a way nobody sees. It is a full-time job with no wages. You are running a threat-detection system at maximum output around the clock, scanning a room for danger while holding a normal conversation about somebody's holiday plans. You are tired in a way that sleep does not fix, because it is not your body that is tired, it is the part of you that never gets to stand down.

And on top of the tiredness sits the shame, which is heavier than the fear. You are a person of faith. You know the verses. You have read them out loud at three in the morning in a voice you did not believe, and then you lay there wondering what is wrong with you that the words did not work, and whether God is disappointed in the state of your nerves. He is not. Scripture never once records God recoiling from a frightened person, and the Spirit He sent has a job title, which is Comforter. He was not sent to inspect your nerves at three in the morning. He was sent to sit with them.

Hear me carefully, because this next sentence is load bearing.

Your anxiety is not a verdict on your faith. It is not evidence of anything except that you are a human being in a world that has given you real reasons. Jesus sweat in a garden. The Psalms are full of people saying how long into a dark ceiling. If a nervous system disqualified anyone, half of Scripture would be missing. And the Spirit did not withdraw from that garden while Jesus sweat in it. He does not withdraw from your kitchen either.

So no, this is not your failure. But there is something in the machinery I want you to see, because I think it has been the trouble the whole time.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Isaiah 26:3

Read the verbs. Not one of them is yours.

You keep him. The keeping is God's activity. In the Hebrew, the word behind stayed carries the sense of being propped up, leaned on, held in place by something outside yourself, the way a beam is supported rather than the way a muscle strains. And the phrase we translate perfect peace is not one word in the Hebrew at all. It is the word peace, said twice. Shalom shalom. Peace peace. Like a hand on your back, and then the same hand again.

You have been trying to be the beam and the support at the same time. No wonder your arms hurt. The propping was always His. His Spirit is the beam under you at three eleven, and He has been carrying that weight through every night you thought you were holding it up on your own.

Here is the turn, and I want you to take it slowly, because everything else in this message rests on it. Peace, in the Bible, is not primarily a feeling. It is a Person, and He has a name.

For he himself is our peace. That is what Paul wrote about Jesus. Not He gives peace, though He does. Not He teaches peace, though He does. He himself is our peace. And on the last night before everything came apart, He said this to men whose hearts were about to break: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you.

Notice how the world gives. Conditionally, temporarily, and only when circumstances cooperate. The world can hand you calm on a good day and takes it straight back when the phone rings. That is a mood. Moods are weather, and you cannot make weather, and you have been standing in a field trying to make weather with your bare hands. What Christ leaves is written down as a gift and never as a technique, and His Spirit is how a gift left in an upper room reaches a cold mug on your own kitchen table.

Christ does not give the way the world gives. He gives Himself, and He is not a mood, and He does not evaporate at three in the morning when the fridge starts humming.

Which brings me to the second thing you need to walk across, and it is the one your mind will resist, because your mind is tired.

This is for you. Personally. Not for stable people with tidy heads and good sleep hygiene. The peace of Christ was handed to a room of frightened men on the worst night of their lives, and He did not wait for them to calm down first. He gave it to them anxious. He gave it to them mid-panic. He knew that within hours every one of them would run, and He still said my peace I give to you, present tense, already done.

He is not waiting for you to get better at this before He gives you Himself. That is the whole point of Him.

There is a picture I cannot get away from, and it is the boat. A storm big enough to frighten professional fishermen, water coming over the sides, grown men bailing with their hands, and Jesus asleep on a cushion in the stern. Read that again slowly. He was not asleep because the storm was small. He was asleep because peace is what He is, and it does not check the forecast first. Then they woke Him, terrified and slightly rude about it, and He stood up in a rocking boat and spoke three words at the weather, and the wind stopped.

Here is what I want you to notice. The peace was in the boat the entire time. It was lying down in the back while they panicked. They were not waiting for peace to arrive. They were waiting to notice what had been on board since they pushed off from shore.

Your kitchen at three in the morning is a boat, and He did not stay on the beach.

And let me say one plain thing, because love is practical. If the nights have gone somewhere darker than fear, past worry and into somewhere you do not want to say out loud, tell one human being today, and tell your doctor. That is not small faith. That is wisdom, and God is fully in it. He put people in your life with hands and ears on purpose, and He is not offended by any door you walk through toward help.

The breakthrough

So stop making it.

That is the whole instruction. Not try harder, not breathe better, not believe more convincingly. Stop trying to generate a feeling and turn instead toward the Person who is already in the room, and receive Him rather than reach for a mood.

Peace is not a thing you achieve at the end of a technique. It is a Person who walks in and sits down. You do not have to be calm to receive Him. You do not have to be quiet first. Right now, with your shoulders up around your ears and your list on the back of an envelope, you can turn your face and open your hands, and He is already nearer than the hum of the fridge.

The night is not going to be a battle you win. It is going to be a room you are not alone in. Not because a technique finally worked. Because the Spirit of Christ is in it, keeping what Isaiah 26:3 put in writing centuries before this week of your life.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud and stop waiting to feel peaceful first. That order never worked and was never the order. You are in Christ, so you speak as one representing the King rather than one hoping for a mood. He put the speaking before the seeing on purpose. Say it, and let peace arrive in His own way. None of it rests on how you feel while you say it. The word does the keeping and His Spirit does the carrying, and your part is only the voice.

  1. Peace, you are not a mood I have to manufacture, you are a Person I get to receive. The Word of God says He keeps him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him, and my mind finally has somewhere to stay.
  2. Striving, your work here is finished in the name of Jesus. I stop building peace and I start staying on the One who keeps it, because perfect peace is kept and never manufactured.
  3. Lord, You are my peace and You are keeping me right now. I trust You, and the trusting is the staying.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
