It came on Tuesday, and it is Sunday now, and it has not moved.
Neil put it against the fruit bowl the day it arrived, because that is where post goes in this house, and then he went to work. That evening he came in, put the keys in the dish, saw it, and decided he was too tired. Wednesday he decided he would do it properly at the weekend, with a clear head. Thursday he did not decide anything. He just did not look at that part of the counter. It is remarkable how precisely a person can not look at eleven inches of laminate.
By Friday the envelope had changed. It was not a letter any more. It was a thing in the room. He could feel where it was from the hallway. He made coffee with his body turned slightly away from it, which is a strange way to make coffee, and he knew it was strange while he was doing it.
Saturday his wife said, gently, without any edge at all, do you want me to open it? And something in him went hard and fast and said no, sharper than he meant, and then he apologized for the tone and not for the no, and she let it go, because she is kind.
Sunday morning, ten past six, and here he is again. Kettle on. One mug. The house still dark behind him. And the envelope propped there with its little plastic window, patient as a stone.
He is not a coward. That is what makes it so confusing to him. He carried his father's coffin. He sat with a friend through the worst year of that friend's life and never once flinched. He has done hard things and he did not need talking into them.
But he cannot pick up this piece of paper.
And here is where I have to stop talking about Neil, because you already know how the kettle sounds in that silence.
You know what it is to walk a different route through your own kitchen. You know the low hum that starts in your chest when you come down the stairs and remember it is still there. You have made bargains with it. Not today. After the weekend. When work calms down. You have told yourself you are being sensible and you have known, the whole time, that you were not being sensible, and that has its own particular shame to it.
Six days. And the thing that frightens you is not really the letter.
It is that you have run out of reasons why you have not opened it.

Your fear is not a verdict on your faith
I want to take one weight off you before anything else, and I want to do it plainly, because it has been sitting on you for six days on top of everything else.
The not-opening is not a spiritual failure. It is not evidence about how much you trust God. Nobody in heaven has written it down in a column next to your name.
Fear is a body doing its job with old information. That is all it is. Something in you learned, somewhere, that a certain kind of news arrives in a certain kind of envelope, and now it stands guard at the counter and it will not stand down, and it does not care that you are forty-three and a believer and perfectly capable. It is not arguing with your theology. It is not even listening to your theology. It is doing the one job it knows, badly, with information it collected a long time ago. Nothing in the written word calls a frightened body a faithless one, and the Spirit is not standing off at the far end of the counter waiting for you to settle down before He comes over.
So the pit here is not the letter. The pit is that you have started to suspect there is something wrong with you.
There is not. There is something loud in you. Loud is not the same as true.
Now hear what God actually says to somebody who is frightened, because notice what He does not say. He does not say stop it. He does not say you should not be feeling this. He does not correct the fear at all.
Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not look around anxiously, for I am your God. I strengthen you; yes, I help you; yes, I uphold you with My right hand of victory.Isaiah 41:10
Every single reason He gives is about where He is standing.
Not one of them is about how you are doing. He does not say do not be afraid because it is probably good news. He does not say do not be afraid because you are strong enough. He says: I am with you. I am your God. I strengthen. I help. I uphold. Five statements, and all five of them are His side of the room.
You have been trying to generate enough courage to open a letter. He has been offering you company. That company is not a mood. It is Isaiah 41:10 standing in a kitchen at ten past six, and His Spirit is what keeps it there while the kettle boils.
You have been waiting to stop being afraid so that you can open it. That order was never going to work, and it is not the order God offers.
He does not remove the fear and then arrive. He arrives, and the fear is still in the room, and you do the thing with Him there. That is the whole of Isaiah 41 in one movement: not feel differently, but I am with you. The right hand that upholds you is not waiting for your hands to steady first. Neither is His Spirit, who was in that kitchen on the Tuesday it came and on every morning you have made coffee sideways since.
And whatever is inside that envelope, whatever the number is, whatever the date is, whatever the result is, it does not have the power to relocate you. You do not go somewhere God is not by reading a page. The worst version of the news arrives into a life where He is already standing, already strengthening, already helping, already holding you up on a side you cannot even see.
The letter can change your circumstances. It cannot change your company.
So you are not gathering courage this morning. You are noticing who is at the counter. He promised the with-you before He promised anything else, and the Spirit is why that is a present-tense sentence at ten past six on a Sunday rather than a nice line in an old book.
Declare this over yourself
Say them standing at the counter with the envelope in front of you, out loud, before you open it. Six days of walking past a thing has made it into a mountain, and in Christ the authority to speak to it has been given to you. Speak first, then reach for it, and whatever is inside, the outcome is His. The sentence underneath yours is Isaiah 41:10, and the Holy Spirit steadies a voice that has nothing of its own at ten past six.
- Envelope, you are paper and you are not my portion. The Word of God says fear thou not, for I am with thee, and I am not afraid of what is inside because I am not alone out here.
- Six days of walking past that counter, you end today in the name of Jesus. God strengthens me, He helps me, He upholds me, and the hand that upholds me is steady enough to open a letter.
- Lord, You are my God and You are with me right here. I open it held, and being held is not conditional on what it says.
