He wakes at 4:47, which is thirteen minutes before he has to, and it is the same thirteen minutes every morning. Nothing has happened. The house is dark and quiet and everyone in it is fine. But his chest is already tight, his jaw is already set, and somewhere behind his eyes a list has started reading itself out to him in order of severity.
He lies still so he does not wake her. He runs the list. The thing at work that has not gone wrong yet. The number in the account. The way his father sounded on the phone. The sentence he said at the table on Tuesday that came out harder than he meant it. He rehearses three conversations he is not going to have. By the time the alarm goes off he has already lived four hours of a day that has not started, and none of them were good ones.
Then he gets up, puts the coffee on, and tells the first person who sees him that he slept fine.
That is the part I want to reach for, because I think you know that man. You might be married to him. You might be him. There is a particular loneliness in a body that starts bracing before the light does, and it is not the fear itself that wears you down. It is the private, exhausting work of carrying it around all day with a normal face on. And I want to say this before I say anything else, so it is not sitting between us: that tightness in your chest is not a report card on your faith. It is not evidence that you love God badly. It is a body that has been on watch too long, and I am not going to add one ounce to what you are already holding.

The night He said it
Most people have heard the sentence. Very few people know what room He was standing in when He said it, and the room is the whole thing.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.John 14:27
This is not a sunny afternoon on a hillside. This is the last night. Supper is over. One of the men at that table has already gone out into the dark to sell Him. Within a few hours He will be in a garden praying so hard that Luke says His sweat came like great drops of blood, asking His Father if the cup could pass. Before the next sundown He is dead.
And in that room, on that night, He is making arrangements. Listen to the verb. Peace I leave with you. That is the language of a man writing a will. It is what you say when you are settling what belongs to whom before you go. He is not offering a mood. He is bequeathing a possession, and He is naming the recipients out loud while there is still time. John 14:27 is that will and it is still in force, and His Spirit is why it is being read out in your kitchen this morning rather than filed away in a drawer somewhere.
Then He does something almost nobody notices. He puts a fence around it. Not as the world giveth. The world's peace is a payout on conditions. It arrives when the results come back clean, when the account clears, when the person you love finally texts you back, and it leaves again the second the conditions change. That is not peace. That is the gap between bad news, and you have learned to hear the clock ticking inside it. It is why the quiet mornings frighten you as much as the loud ones.
His is a different kind entirely, because of where it came from. He was not calm that night because His circumstances were good. His circumstances were the worst any human being has ever faced. He was calm because of who His Father was to Him, and that had not moved, and it did not move in the garden, and it did not move on the cross. That is the peace He is handing over. It was carried through Gethsemane before it was ever handed to you, and it was paid for in full on the other side of that weekend.
There is one more word in that sentence worth slowing down for. Let not your heart be troubled. He does not say your heart is wrong for being troubled. He does not scold the men in front of Him, and every one of them was afraid that night and He knew it. He speaks to the trouble itself, over their heads, the way a man speaks to weather. That is a very different thing from being told to pull yourself together, and if you have been hearing His voice as the voice that is disappointed in you, that is not Him. He knows exactly what your nervous system has been through. He built it, He has worn one, and He sweat through His own on a Thursday night. That was written for you and not at you, and the Spirit does not deliver it in the disappointed voice you have been hearing it in at 4:47.
Now let me say the low place plainly, because you deserve to be seen in it before you are lifted out of it.
You are tired. Not sleepy, tired. You have been the one holding it together for so long that nobody thinks to ask if you are. You have prayed about this. You have prayed about it hundreds of times, in the dark, in the truck, in the parking lot before going in, and you have gotten up with the same tightness still sitting on your sternum, and somewhere in there a small voice started suggesting that maybe this is just how you are made and maybe it is not going to lift.
I do not believe that, and I am not saying so to be encouraging. I am saying it because miracles did not stop. God still walks into rooms and takes things off people, in this decade, in ordinary houses, at four in the morning. I have no interest in a faith that files healing under history. And I am not asking you to believe that in general. In general is easy. I am asking you to let it be about you specifically, this morning, in your kitchen, in the chest that is tight right now. That is not my optimism. It is what He promised on the last night He had, and His Spirit brought that promise all the way down the years into a kitchen with the light not on yet.
And hear this too, because I will not skip it: peace from God has never meant going it alone. Tell a real human being what your mornings are like. Keep the appointment, keep taking what you were given to take. There is no medal for carrying this by yourself, and He has never once asked you to.
So here is the turn, and it happens now, not later.
You have been waking up and taking the day's fear on as though it were yours to carry. It is not yours. It never was assigned to you. There is something in that will with your name on it, and it has been sitting there unclaimed while you white knuckle your way through morning after morning. It was written long before you were born, and the Spirit has been holding it out at 4:47 every morning while you reached for the list instead.
You do not have to work up to this. An inheritance is not earned on the day it is received, and nobody in that room earned what He left them. They ran. He left it to them anyway, knowing exactly what they were about to do.
And notice what He did not say. He did not say the storm was canceled. Peter still denied Him before the roosters were up. The rest of them still scattered. The night still went the way the night went. Peace was not a promise that the day would be gentle with them. It was a promise about who would be standing with them inside it, and that promise held through the worst weekend in human history, and it has held every weekend since.
So stop bracing. Right now, in this chair, before the day gets up and starts making its demands. The One who kept His peace in Gethsemane is in the room with you, and He is not holding it back to see how you handle today first.
Declare this over yourself
Say them with your hand flat on your chest, before the day starts. The tightness gets there first every morning, so let your voice get there second rather than never. You are in Christ, so you are not generating peace, you are receiving what He already bought and saying so out loud. However He answers, the price was paid before you woke. John 14:27 is the will you are reading from, and the Holy Spirit is standing beside a tight chest at 4:47 to see that it gets said.
- Tightness, let go of my chest. The Word of God says peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you, and what Jesus left me He did not leave for me to earn.
- Heart of mine, do not be troubled and do not be afraid, in the name of Jesus. The peace in me was bought and not brewed, and the price was paid in full before I woke up.
- Jesus, Your peace is mine right now and it is not as the world gives. I receive the peace that cost You everything and costs me nothing.
