When Being Sick Became Your Name

This message is for the years of being called the sick one until it became your name

The introductions happen in the hallway, where the coats are, and each one takes about four seconds.

"This is my cousin Ana. She has the pain thing, so she might not stay long."

Nobody in that hallway means a single unkind word by it. The woman saying it loves her. She is being helpful. She is clearing a path so that nobody hands Ana a tray, so that nobody is hurt when she leaves at eight, so the evening can be soft for her. It is real kindness, and it is done at the door, in front of every new face, and it has been done that way for eleven years.

Here is what eleven years of four seconds does. It does not stay in the hallway. It gets into the pharmacy, where the woman behind the counter knows her by the prescription. It gets into the forms, where she is a list of dates. It gets into the ordinary question, how are you, which used to mean how are you and now means only one thing, so that answering honestly turns a conversation into a report and answering brightly turns it into a lie. And then, quietly, it gets in the last door, the one nobody sees her open, where she thinks about herself in the third person on the bad afternoons: she is the one who cannot. She is the one who cancels. She is the sick one.

That is the part I want to say slowly, because it happened to you and I do not think anybody has ever named it out loud. You did not choose that name. You were not asked. It was handed to you a syllable at a time by people who were trying to be gentle, and by a body that kept giving them evidence, and by year after year of your own quiet arithmetic. You have carried it so long that you have stopped noticing you are carrying it. You just answer to it now, the way anyone answers to their name.

When Being Sick Became Your Name

The name they gave you was never the one He wrote

I want to sit here for a minute before I say anything hopeful, because you have been rushed past this place a hundred times and I am not going to do it to you again.

It is not only the pain. If it were only the pain you would have found a way to hold it by now, and honestly, you mostly have. It is what the years took while you were busy managing the pain. It took the version of you that made plans without a contingency. It took the friendships that thinned out, not from cruelty, just from the slow attrition of being the one who cancels. It took the sentence you used to be able to say, I would love to, without doing three days of maths in your head first. It took your face in photographs, where you can see exactly which year it changed. And it took your name, which is the theft nobody reported, because nobody knew a theft had happened. It was reported. Jeremiah 30:17 is the report, and the Holy Spirit has been holding it open since the year your face changed in the photographs.

And then there is the loneliest part, the part you have not said even to the person who loves you most. Somewhere in there you began to suspect that the illness is not something happening to you. That it is simply what you are now. That there is no you underneath it waiting to come back out, and that the healthy person in your memory was a draft, and this is the final version.

That is a lie, and I am not going to argue you out of it. I am going to show you where God stands on the matter, because He has already spoken about it, and He spoke about it with startling precision.

For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.Jeremiah 30:17

Read the second half of that verse again. God gives the reason for the healing, and the reason is not the wound. The reason is the name. Because they called thee an Outcast. Because a label got fastened to somebody He loved, and because it stuck, and because it was said so often that it stopped sounding like an insult and started sounding like a description.

He noticed the name. He was not neutral about it. He answered it with restoration, in the same breath.

So here is the first thing, and it is for anyone who has quietly decided that this kind of thing belonged to another century. The God who spoke that sentence over a whole city has not changed His mind about bodies since. Jesus never once met a sick person and taught them acceptance instead of touching them. Not once. He touched the woman who had bled for twelve years, and by then twelve years had almost certainly become her name too, and He would not let her disappear back into the crowd unnamed. He turned around and called her daughter in front of everybody. He gave her a family word to replace a diagnosis. That is not a story about the past. That is His nature, and His nature is not a season. Scripture holds that scene word for word, and it is His Spirit who keeps it from being a thing that only ever happened once.

And notice what He did with the detail. He did not heal her privately and let her slip away, which is what she was trying to do, and which is what you have learned to do at parties. He stopped a moving crowd for one woman and made everybody stand still while she said the whole thing out loud. Twelve years, and all of it, in front of people. It reads as an unkindness until you understand what He was doing. He was refusing to let her keep the name in secret. She had come for a body and He gave her a body and a name and a public place to stand in, and she left with all three.

And here is the second thing, which is harder, because you can believe He heals in general and still be certain He is scrolling past you. You have prayed. You have been prayed for. Someone laid hands on you in a car park once and you cried the whole way home and nothing changed, and you have been careful ever since about hoping in front of witnesses.

Then hear this plainly. Not one of those prayers failed for lack of faith on your part. That is not how any of this works, and if anyone has ever hinted otherwise to you, they were wrong, and I am sorry it was said in His name. You are not the reason. You have never been the reason. He is not standing at a distance waiting for you to produce a better grade of belief before He comes near. He is nearer to you at this exact moment than the person in the next room. That is not my reassurance to hand out. The Holy Spirit is the reason that verse is standing up in this room instead of lying flat in a book, and Jeremiah 30:17 is where it was written down.

The breakthrough

So put the label down. Not the treatment, not the appointments, not the medication in the drawer. Keep every one of those, take what you have been given, and never let anyone tell you that receiving care is a failure of trust, because it is not, and God is in that care as surely as He is in this page. Put down the name. That is the thing that was never yours.

Say your own name out loud, right now, the way it was said over you before any of this began. That is who is reading this. That is who God is looking at. His Spirit is saying that same name over you while you say it, and Jeremiah 30:17 is where He showed His hand: He answers a name with restoration, never with silence.

I know it feels like a small thing to do while your body still aches. It is not small. Every hard season has a moment where the thing you are agreeing with changes, and the agreement always changes before the circumstance does. For eleven years you have been agreeing with a description. You are allowed to stop. Not by pretending, not by refusing to say the true word for what you live with, but by taking that true word out of the place where your name belongs and putting it back where it was always meant to sit, which is in your medical notes and not in your soul.

And now receive what He has already spoken over the body you are sitting in. Not later. Here, in this room, at this hour, while the tea goes cold and the house is quiet. Healing is not a prize at the end of a long enough wait. It is His hand, moving now, over the exact place that hurts. That is written and not wished: Jeremiah 30:17 has Him restoring a people whose name strangers had already changed, and the same Spirit is in this room with the medication still in the drawer and the house still quiet.

Declare this over yourself

Say them until you hear a different name in your own mouth. Names change when somebody with standing speaks over them, and your standing is Christ in you. Speak to the label, believing and not doubting. Whatever He does about the illness, He has already settled what you are called. That is not mine to settle. Jeremiah 30:17 settled it, and the Holy Spirit is what puts an old sentence into your own voice, at your own table, in the hour you are actually in.

  1. Name they gave me, you are not my name. The Word of God says they called thee an outcast, saying, this is Zion whom no man seeketh after, and God answered that sentence by seeking.
  2. Label, get off me in the name of Jesus. I will restore health unto thee and heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord, and He said it to people the whole town had already renamed.
  3. Lord, You call me sought after, and that is my name now. I answer to what You call me and I stop answering to what the illness called me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
