The Night Before the Morning

This message is for the night before a surgery you cannot sleep through

At two in the morning a hospital does not sleep. It ticks, and whirrs, and breathes. Somewhere down the corridor a machine counts something out loud, a trolley wheel squeaks past a door, a pair of soft shoes makes that quiet double sound on the floor and fades. None of it is loud enough to be the reason anyone is awake.

A woman sits on the edge of the bed with her feet not quite reaching the floor. Her bag is packed on the chair. It has been packed since four in the afternoon and she has checked it three times, and there is nothing left in the world she can do about tomorrow. She has signed the paper. She has read the paper. She read the part they tell you not to dwell on, and she has been dwelling on it ever since.

It is not the operation, exactly. It is the hour before the operation. It is the moment the trolley starts moving and the ceiling tiles begin to slide past, and she has to hand herself over to people she met yesterday, and there is no version of tomorrow where she stays in charge of anything.

You know the plastic bracelet on her wrist. You know it because it is on yours. That is why you are reading at this hour with the light off, so that nobody looks in and asks whether you are all right, because you have not decided what you would say. So let me sit down here on the edge of the bed beside you. I am not going to tell you it will all be fine. I am going to tell you Who is already in this room.

The Night Before the Morning

The name He gave in the bitter place

You are not afraid of the wrong thing, and I will not let anyone tell you that you are. People mean well. They say the surgeon does twenty of these a month. They say their cousin had the same operation and was walking to the shop by Thursday. All of it is kind and none of it touches the actual thing, because the actual thing was never a statistic.

The actual thing is that at some hour tomorrow you stop being a person with plans and become a body on a table, and every single person in that room will know more about what is happening to you than you do. That is a real weight, and I am not going to shrink it so that it is easier for me to answer. Scripture never once asks a frightened person to be calmer before God will come near, and His Spirit is closer to this bed than the machines are.

So let me say it as it actually sits in your chest. You are carrying the fear of the operation. Underneath that, the fear of going under, of the exact second when you stop being able to feel yourself. Underneath that, the older one, the one you have never said out loud to a living soul: that you might not come back up. And some of you quietly put a few things in order last week and told nobody, and you have felt strange and guilty about it ever since. I see that too. It is not faithlessness. It is love, doing what love does.

And under all of it, the loneliest part of tonight. Everybody went home. They love you and they will be here at seven and they are not here now. There is you, and the machines counting, and the ceiling.

Now hear where God chose to tell His people what His name was.

Three days out of Egypt, in a desert, with no water. When they finally found water at a place called Marah, it was bitter and they could not drink it. A whole nation, rescued a week earlier, standing around a spring they could not use. That is where God gave Israel a name for Himself that He had not used before. Not at the sea. Not in the middle of the deliverance, with everybody singing.

I am the LORD, your healer.Exodus 15:26

Read the setting again, because the setting is the whole sermon. He did not announce Himself as healer on a good day. He announced it at bitter water, among frightened people who could not see how the next day was going to work. He gave that name in exactly the room you are sitting in tonight, and the Spirit has not changed the tense of it since.

Somebody along the way may have taught you, gently and sincerely, that the healing part of God belongs to another century. That He did it then to prove something, and having proved it, He moved on to other business. I understand where that teaching came from and I am not going to argue you out of it, because arguing has never healed anybody. I only want you to notice what kind of word "healer" is. It is not a policy. It is not a season. It is a name. Names do not expire. He did not say I heal from time to time. He said this is who I am, and He has not since become someone else.

And here is where you will quietly slide out from underneath it, and I would rather catch you now than let you fall through. You believe He heals. You do not doubt that at all. The doubt is only about whether He is paying attention to you specifically, in this bed, on this ward, with your particular chart and your particular fear. Big things, yes. You, at two in the morning, probably not.

Then look at how Jesus actually did it. Almost never a crowd all at once. A woman in a packed street who reached out and touched the edge of His clothing, and He stopped an entire moving procession to find out who it had been. He did not need to ask. He asked because she needed to be found, not just fixed. He would not let her have the healing anonymously. He turned around in a crush of people to give one frightened woman her face back.

That is not a God who processes cases. That is a God who stops.

And there was a blind man by a roadside who would not be quiet, and when they finally brought him over, Jesus asked him a question that has always undone me. What do you want Me to do for you. To a blind man. It was obvious. He asked anyway, because He would not treat a person as a condition with legs. He wanted the man to say it in his own words, in his own voice, out loud, in front of everybody.

So say yours. Not the polite version. Whatever it is you actually want from Him tonight, in the words you would use if nobody religious were listening. He is not going to be embarrassed by it.

There is one more thing I want you to have before the light comes up, and it is short.

There is a psalm that says the One who keeps you does not slumber. It says it twice, in two different ways, as though the writer knew that a person reading it would be reading it at an hour like this one. He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. Every other person who loves you is asleep right now. That is not neglect, it is just bodies. But the keeping of you did not stop when the visiting hours did, and it is not going to lapse at any point between now and the moment you open your eyes again.

You are not the only one awake in this building tonight, and you are not the only one awake in this room. Psalm 121 promised that watch, and the Spirit keeps it Himself.

And let me say the next part plainly, because it should come from the person praying for you and not from anyone else. The team who will work on you tomorrow are not the alternative to God's healing. Skill is a thing He hands out, and steady hands are a mercy He has been distributing for a very long time. Keep every appointment. Take what they give you. Ask your questions in the morning. Let them do their work, and let Him work through it, and around it, and past the edges of what they can reach.

The breakthrough

So here is what I would like to happen before you close your eyes, and it is not a technique and it will not take long.

You have been holding tomorrow all night. You have been carrying an hour that has not arrived, on your own, with no help, in the dark. Put it down. Not by pretending you are calm. By handing it to Someone who is already awake in this room and does not need the lights on to see you. That handing over is not my idea; Scripture calls it casting your care on Him, and the Spirit is the pair of hands already open under yours.

You do not have to feel anything for this to be real. Feelings are weather and you are in a storm; you would not measure the ocean from inside a wave. What is true right now is true whether or not your body has caught up: the God who named Himself healer at the bitter water is here, He is not hurried, and He does not need you to be brave first.

The night is not the verdict. The night is only the night. And He has been keeping people through nights like this one since long before there were hospitals to be frightened in.

Declare this over yourself

Say them tonight, since you are not sleeping anyway. Speaking is what the hours before a surgery are actually for. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so what you say is not a wish, it is an ambassador's word carrying the King's will. Exodus 15:26 is the name you are standing on, and the Spirit brings it up out of you at an hour when nothing else will come. Say it, and go in tomorrow knowing the outcome is His and you are His either way.

  1. Night before, you are not mine to solve. The Word of God says I am the Lord that healeth thee, and the God who heals does not clock off at midnight.
  2. Sleeplessness, you are not in charge of tomorrow, and I say it in the name of Jesus. Every hand in that theater is a hand the Lord can guide, and He is awake in this room right now.
  3. Lord, You are my Healer and You go into that room ahead of me. I thank You, because I do not go in alone and I do not come out alone.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
