Healing & HealthPsalm 103:3

The Report Is Not the Verdict

This message is for the scan result you have been carrying in your pocket for a week

The paper has gone soft at the crease. That is what a week does. Folded, unfolded, folded again, until the fiber gives up along the line and the fold stops being a fold and starts being a scar in the page. It lives in a jacket pocket now. Not the good jacket, the one by the door, the one a man grabs without thinking, which means the paper goes everywhere he goes. To the shop. To work. To the school gate at half past three. It weighs nothing at all and it weighs everything.

Seven days. He has read it maybe forty times. There are three words in it he cannot say out loud yet, so he says nothing, and when someone asks what the doctor said he answers that they are still looking into it, which is true, and which is also the smallest sentence he has ever built with his mouth.

He is fine at work. He laughs in the right places, he holds an entire conversation about a delivery schedule, and the whole time the page sits over his ribs like a cold hand. Then at eleven at night, in the car in the driveway, engine off, dome light on, he takes it out one more time. He reads it the way people read a thing when they are secretly hoping the letters have moved.

They have not moved.

And now I am going to stop calling him he.

Because you know which pocket. You know the exact crease. You know the hour of the night when you take it out and those words are still sitting there, patient, in that flat clinical typeface that never once asks how you are holding up. You have been carrying a scan result around for a week like a stone in your shoe, telling nobody, because the second you say it out loud to a person who loves you, it becomes real in the room, and right now it is only real on paper.

I know. Come here. Sit down. Let me tell you what you are actually holding.

The Report Is Not the Verdict

A description is not a sentence

First, the honest part, because I will not skip past your week to get to the good news.

That page cost you something. It cost you sleep. It cost you the ordinary pleasure of a Tuesday. It took a normal appointment and turned your own body into a stranger you now watch out of the corner of your eye, listening to it, interpreting every twinge, running numbers you never wanted to learn. You have already lived out three futures this week that have not happened. You have already had the conversation with your family in your head, more than once, and you cried in it, and then you got up and made dinner.

And nobody knows. That is the part that hollows a person out. Not the news. The carrying of it alone. Psalm 103 was written by a man talking to his own soul because there was nobody else in the room, and the Spirit of God has been in every one of those three futures with you.

So before anything else: you are not dramatic, you are not weak, and you are not failing at faith because your hands shake when you unfold that paper. Fear is what a body does when it loves being alive. It is not a sin to be afraid. It is not a crack in your trust. It is evidence that you were made for life and something has threatened it, and your soul is objecting.

Now hear me on what that page is.

A scan is a description. Somebody pointed an instrument at one region of your body on one particular morning and wrote down what the instrument saw. That is real information and it matters and you should take it seriously. But a description is not a sentence. A sentence comes from a bench. It comes from someone holding authority to decide how a story ends, and I want you to notice, tonight, in your kitchen, that the person who typed that page was never handed that authority. They did their job, honourably, and their job was to describe.

There is only one voice in this universe with the standing to say how your story ends.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,Psalm 103:2 and 3

Read what David set beside what. Forgiving and healing, in the same breath, in the same list of benefits, out of the same heart. We have somehow decided that the first half of that sentence is for now and the second half is for later. David did not divide them. He piled them up together, because they come from one place, and that place is the character of God rather than the calendar of history.

That is the first thing I need you to walk across, and I am not going to argue you across it. I am going to point at it. The healing of bodies was never a temporary program that ran for a generation and closed. It is not a museum exhibit. Jesus healed because of who He is, not because of when it was, and He has not changed occupation since. If compassion moved Him then, compassion moves Him now, and He is looking at you with the same face He turned toward every person who came to Him holding something they could not fix.

And here is the second thing, the harder one, the one you will try to slide out from under.

This is for you. Personally. Not for the general category of sick people, not for the abstract congregation, for you, the one holding a soft-creased page in a jacket pocket. Look at the word all in that verse. It is not a crowd word. It is an inventory word. He heals all your diseases, plural, itemized, one by one, including the one on that page whose name you cannot yet say out loud. He is not scanning past you toward someone more deserving. There is no queue and you are not at the back of it. The Spirit put that word in front of you tonight and not in front of a crowd.

You have been treating that paper as the verdict. It is the report. The verdict belongs to Jesus, and He is not silent, and He is not slow.

I want to give you one more picture, because I think your fear has a shape and I think it is a courtroom.

You have been sitting in that room for seven days waiting for a sentence. You have already been standing when the judge came in. You have already braced for the words. And the thing about a courtroom in the mind is that it runs on a schedule you invented, with a judge you invented, reading from a page that was never a sentencing document in the first place. Meanwhile the actual Judge of all the earth has come down off the bench, walked the length of the room, and sat next to you. That is what the whole gospel is. The One with the authority to sentence you chose instead to carry what you had coming, and He did it with His own body, and the marks are still in His hands.

A person who has done that for your soul is not going to be careless with your bones. That is not my opinion. David set forgiving and healing side by side in the same written list, and His Spirit is what carries that list out of an old song and into a courtroom you invented.

So the question is not whether He is able. You already know He is able, or you would not have opened this page tonight. The question is whether He is willing, and there was a man who asked Him exactly that, straight out, kneeling in the road with a disease everybody had already written him off for. If you are willing, you can make me clean. And Jesus did not lecture him. He reached out and touched a man nobody had touched in years and He said, I am willing. Then and there. The willingness came first and the healing came second, and the touch came before either.

Whatever else you doubt at eleven at night in a parked car, do not doubt His willingness. It is the most settled fact about Him.

Let me say the practical thing too, because love is practical. Keep your appointment. Ring the number they gave you. Take the page to the doctor and take it to God, and do not let anyone tell you those are rivals. God has put good people in that hospital with skilled hands and He works through them constantly. Faith is not the refusal of care. Faith is who you believe is standing behind the care.

The breakthrough

So put the pocket down. Right now, wherever you are.

You have been holding that page the way you hold something you are guarding. Nobody can help you with a thing you are guarding. Something happens the moment a carried thing becomes a given thing, and that is what this hour is for. Not a decision to make later. A transfer, now, in this room, with the lamp on and the house quiet. The transfer is not something you generate. Psalm 103:3 was written down long before this week so that you would have somewhere to set it, and the Holy Spirit does the carrying while your part stays as small as an opening hand.

You are not being asked to feel brave. You are being asked to stop carrying it by yourself. There is a difference and the difference is everything.

Declare this over yourself

Take it out of your pocket and say these over it, out loud, with the paper in your hand. A report describes; a declaration answers. Your standing to answer is Christ in you and not confidence in yourself. The words are David's, written long before your scan existed. His Spirit came with them. Speak to the mountain, believing and not doubting, and the outcome is His, where it has always been.

  1. Report in my pocket, you are information and you are not a verdict. The Word of God says who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases, and He is the only One who passes verdicts on me.
  2. Dread I have carried for a week, you are set down in the name of Jesus. A report describes what is, and my God decides what is done about it.
  3. Lord, You forgive all and You heal all, and all is a word You chose Yourself. Your Spirit is in this kitchen and Psalm 103 is written down, so this is not my own nerve. I bring You this piece of paper and I stand on Your word over it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
