The mug moved down a shelf about a year ago, and nobody in that house ever noticed.
It used to live on the top shelf with the good glasses. Then one ordinary morning she reached for it the way she had reached for it a thousand times, and something in the right shoulder caught and went white behind her eyes, and she stood at the counter with her hand still in the air, waiting for it to pass. It passed. It always passes. That afternoon she moved the mug down, and the cereal bowls, and the small saucepan, and she did all of it while the kettle boiled, so it would not look like an event.
That is how it goes. First you stop reaching. Then you stop sleeping on that side. Then you stop saying anything about it at all, because you have already said it twice, once to a doctor who was kind and once to a friend who asked, and then asked again three months later, and you could hear yourself turning into a person with a shoulder. So you learned the small version. It is a bit stiff. It is fine. It is just how I slept.
Let me stop talking about her, because I am not really talking about her.
You have a shelf like that. You have a whole quiet geography of adjustments: the way you get out of the car, the arm you carry the shopping with, the side of the bed you gave up without telling anybody you were giving it up. You did not decide any of it in one go. It arrived one small accommodation at a time until the pain stopped being an event and became the shape of your day. And somewhere in the middle of all that rearranging, you went silent about it. Not because it stopped. Because mentioning it had become one more thing to carry.

The thing you stopped saying out loud
Here is what I think it actually costs, and I want to say it plainly before I say anything hopeful, because hope handed to someone too early just bounces off.
It is not mainly the pain. By now there is an uneasy peace with the pain. It is the loneliness that grew up around it. It is lying awake at two in the morning on your good side, staring at the wall, doing the arithmetic of how many more years this arm has to work. It is the flicker of shame when someone offers to lift the box and you let them. It is having prayed about it, more than once, with real hope in your chest, and then having to get up off your knees and go on making dinner with the same shoulder you had before. Nobody tells you what to do with that particular disappointment. So you file it, and you get quieter, and quiet starts to feel like maturity.
It is not maturity. It is fatigue wearing maturity's coat.
And I want to take one thing off you right now, before we go any further, because I think you have been carrying it and it was never yours. Your silence is not unbelief. The fact that this has gone on for years is not a verdict on your faith. There is no scoreboard in heaven with your name and a column marked not enough. I have watched people conclude that the reason nothing has shifted is something defective in them, and it is one of the cruellest untruths in circulation, and it is not in the Word anywhere. Nowhere in Scripture is a sick person handed the bill for still being sick. And the Holy Spirit did not come to audit you: He has been with you at two in the morning, on the good side, staring at the wall, the whole time you thought you were doing that alone.
Look at how the New Testament actually handles a sick person. It does not send them off to work on their conviction. It tells them to send for help.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up.James 5:14 and 15
Read that again slowly and notice whose faith is doing the lifting. The sick person's one job is to make a phone call. The praying is done over them, not by them. The oil is put on them, not asked from them. The prayer of faith in that sentence belongs to the people who came, and the raising belongs to the Lord, and the person at the center of it is allowed to simply lie there and be prayed for.
That is not a loophole. That is the design. God built the receiving of healing so that the one who is weakest in the room contributes the least. If you have nothing left but the willingness to be prayed for, you are not on the edge of this. You are exactly the person it was written for. The same Spirit who moved the man who wrote that instruction is standing in the kitchen where the mug sits one shelf lower than it used to, and He is not there to inspect the arrangement.
Now the second thing, and I will not argue you into it, because nobody has ever been argued into being loved.
There is a habit of mind that files healing under history. Something God did then, in a dusty place, to people whose names we have. It is a comfortable place to file it, because a story cannot disappoint you. But the same hands that were reaching for people two thousand years ago have not been folded. Jesus is not a memory who used to be kind. He is alive, and He is the same, and kindness is not a phase He went through.
And He is not a general policy. That is the part that is hard to receive, so I will say it as concretely as I can. He does not heal illness. He heals people, one at a time, by touching the specific part that hurts. He asked a blind man what he wanted, when the answer was obvious to everyone standing there, because He wanted the man's own mouth to name his own need. He touched a leper who had not been touched by another human hand in years. He did not treat a category. He stopped for a person.
So He knows which shoulder. He knows which side of the bed you gave up and which shelf you emptied. He knows the sound you make when you get your coat on and you think nobody heard. None of that is a footnote to Him. It is the whole reason He came near.
I want you to bring it back into the room.
Not the tidy version. Not my shoulder has been a bit stiff. The real one. Say it out loud, right now, in whatever room you are in: this shoulder has not let me sleep on that side since the fall. Name the side. Name how long. If you know the date, say the date.
Something happens when the small version gets replaced by the true one. You have been managing this in miniature for so long that even your prayers had shrunk to fit. Let it be the size it actually is. God is not overwhelmed by the full size of it, and He was never going to be moved by the polite version. James 5:14 never asked for a summary. It asked for a call, and the Holy Spirit is already carrying the true version before you have finished saying the date out loud.
And then stop asking and start receiving, because those are two different postures and your body knows the difference. Asking leans forward. Receiving opens its hands. What was done for you was done on a cross, in a body, by someone who took the wounds into His own shoulders so that yours would not have the last word. That is finished work. You are not talking a reluctant God into something. You are opening your hands under something already poured.
Today. This hour. In this kitchen, this hallway, this chair.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, and then say something to somebody. Scripture puts the asking and the speaking inside the same instruction and never treats silence as strength. In Christ you have every right to speak over your own body. Speak, ask, and leave the outcome to Him. None of that right is mine to lend you. Scripture put it in your hands, and the Holy Spirit is the breath inside the words when you say them, never the volume you manage to find.
- Shoulder, you are mentioned out loud again today. The Word of God says is any sick among you, let him call for the elders of the church, and God built the asking right into the plan.
- Habit of not mentioning it, get out in the name of Jesus. Suffering quietly is not the same as being humble, and the prayer of faith was never meant to be prayed alone.
- Lord, You told us to call, so I am calling. I thank You, because You have never thought my shoulder too small a thing to bring to Your people.
