The Dressing You Change Again Tonight

This message is for the wound that will not close and has to be dressed again tonight

Half past ten, and the extractor fan comes on with the light the way it always does, with that rattle it has had since March. By now the rattle is part of the hour. On the closed lid of the cistern sits a shoebox with its lid off: saline pods, gauze squares in their paper sleeves, a roll of tape, and a small pair of scissors that live in the box and are never, ever allowed into the kitchen drawer.

She sits down on the edge of the bath. She has learned to do this sitting down. The first weeks she stood, and standing made her hands shake by the end of it, so now she sits, and she lays a folded towel across her knees, and she works.

The old dressing comes off slowly. That is the part nobody warns anyone about, the slowness. There is a way of lifting it that hurts less and it takes about ninety seconds and none of it can be hurried. She breathes out through her mouth while she does it, the way she was taught in a different life for a different pain.

And then she looks.

That is the moment. Not the sting. The looking. Because she memorized the shape of it weeks ago, the whole small geography, the edge that is pink and the part that is not, and every single night she leans in under the mirror light and asks it the same question, which is: are you any smaller than you were.

Tonight it is the same size it was.

So she cleans it the way she was shown. She dries the skin around it. She lays the new gauze on, and she cuts four strips of tape, and the tape does not tear straight, it never tears straight, and she says something under her breath that is not quite a prayer and not quite a complaint, and it goes up into the ceiling and stays there.

Then the box goes back on the shelf. The light goes off. The fan rattles down into silence. And she stands in the dark hallway for two seconds longer than she needs to, for no reason she could explain to anybody.

And now I am going to stop saying she.

Because you know that shoebox. You know the ninety seconds. You know the exact shape of the thing you look at under that light, and you know what week you are on, and you stopped telling people the number a while ago because of the face they make when they hear it. Somebody asked how it was going and you said, getting there, and you were not lying, you were only too tired to open the whole file in a doorway.

And you are going to do it again tonight. That is the weight of it. Not that it happened. That it is happening again, tonight, at half past ten, in that small room, with that rattling fan, and no one on this earth is going to see it but you.

Sit down a minute. I want to tell you what God sees when He looks at that room.

The Dressing You Change Again Tonight

He named the thing nobody else was naming

I am not going to tell you this is a season, or that it is building something in you, or any of the other sentences people reach for when they cannot bear the silence. Those have all been said to you already. They cost the speaker nothing and they cost you a little more each time.

Here is what is actually true, and I want to say the hard half first, because that is what somebody in your position deserves to hear first.

A wound that does not close does something to a person that the wound itself is not responsible for. It starts quietly. You stop expecting the change. Then you stop looking for it. Then, somewhere in there, you start to suspect that somebody set you down and left, that the ones who prayed hard at the beginning have moved on to newer emergencies, and that God, who is very busy and very kind, has a list, and your name is no longer near the top of it.

Nobody says that out loud. It is not a thought you would defend in daylight. It just sits there under the tiredness, and it does more damage than the wound.

Now hear what God said, and pay attention to the order He says it in.

For I will bring up healing for you, and I will heal you of your wounds, declares the LORD; because they called you an outcast, saying, "This is Zion, no one cares for her."Jeremiah 30:17

Read the word because.

He does not give the reason you expect. He does not say, because the wound is deep, or because the treatment failed, or because the suffering has gone on long enough. He says: because they called you an outcast. Because somebody looked at this and decided that no one cares for her.

God heard that sentence. The one nobody said out loud. The one the situation itself was saying, night after night, in a small bathroom with a rattling fan. And He answered it, in His own voice, on His own authority, and He answered it before He said one word about the wound.

That is the order. First He takes the name off you. Then He speaks about your body. So take it tonight in the order He gave it: you are named and you are cared for before one word is said about the skin, because that is how Jeremiah 30:17 is built, and the Spirit is why it arrives as a voice and not as a quotation.

Which means the thing He is most concerned about tonight is not the measurement. It is what the measurement has been telling you about how He feels. You are not an outcast. Nobody has moved on. There is not a list with your name on the wrong end of it. Jeremiah 30:17 says that in His own voice, and His Spirit brings it in over the rattle of the fan and sets it down beside the shoebox. He is nearest to the thing that hurts, always has been, and He was in that room every one of those nights, watching hands that were tired do careful work.

And let me say this plainly, once, because somebody put it in your head and it needs taking out. Keeping the appointments, taking what you have been prescribed, dressing this exactly the way you were shown: none of that is a lack of faith. Not one bit of it. Care is not the opposite of trust. God gave you hands and He gave you people who know things, and using both is obedience, not compromise.

The breakthrough

So here is where we are, you and me, at the end of a long day.

God is not standing at the far end of this holding the good news until the day the skin closes over. He is in the room. He is in tonight. He is nearer to that bathroom at half past ten than He is to any pulpit anywhere, because that is where you are, and He goes where His people are.

He has already said the sentence over you that matters most. Not outcast. Not forgotten. Not left. Cared for, by name, out loud, on the record, and it does not depend on what the mirror shows you tonight. The Spirit does not wait outside a bathroom door while you work. He is in there, and Jeremiah 30:17 is the sentence He is saying over you while the tape refuses to tear straight.

Take that in. Not the outcome. Him. He is here, and you are His, and you may stop earning the right to be tired.

Declare this over yourself

Say them while you do the dressing, with your hands busy and the thing still open. God speaks about restoring in the same breath as He speaks about wounds. In Christ you have standing to say His word over this, so say it, however He answers and whenever. The lines are His before they are yours, out of Jeremiah 30:17, and the breath behind them is His Spirit rather than your own resolve.

  1. Wound, you are dressed again tonight and you are not forgotten. The Word of God says I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord.
  2. Weariness of doing this one more night, get out in the name of Jesus. The Lord speaks of my wounds in the plural and of Himself in the singular, and one God is more than enough for all of them.
  3. Lord, You call Yourself the God who heals, and You said it to people everybody else had written off. I change this dressing as somebody You are speaking over.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
