Healing & HealthMatthew 8:17

Say the Word Over Your Own Body

This message is for the diagnosis that was read to you in a room with the door shut

The door was already closed when he sat down. That is the part nobody warns you about. Not the word itself. The door. Somebody shuts it before the sentence is said, because the room is built for sentences that need a shut door, and the small click of the latch tells you what kind of sentence is coming before anyone across the desk has opened their mouth.

Then the folder. Then the pause while a good and tired person finds the line they are looking for. Then the word, said kindly, said carefully, said in the level voice people use when they have said it many times and are trying not to sound like it. Chronic. Progressive. Stage. Degenerative. Manage.

He walked out into a corridor where a vending machine was humming and a child was drawing on the back of a leaflet and nothing whatsoever had changed for anybody else in that building. He drove home. He made dinner. And within a week the word had done what words do when they are said behind a shut door. It had moved in. It stopped being information and became structure. Every plan he made from that day forward was built on top of it, and he never once caught himself doing it, because you do not notice a wall you have started leaning on.

Now put the folder in your own hands, because I think you know this room better than I do.

I want to be plain with you, and plain is the only way I know how to be. That word was true. I will not insult you by pretending it was not. Someone with training and care read your body honestly and told you what they saw, and they were not lying to you.

It is simply not the only word that has been spoken over you. And it is nowhere near the oldest.

Say the Word Over Your Own Body

Which word is carrying the weight

I spend my days on the fabric of a house. Footings, load paths, water, power, the parts nobody photographs. And the first question on any structure I walk into is never how it looks. It is which member is carrying the weight. Find that, and you understand the whole building. Get it wrong, and you can redecorate for twenty years while the thing quietly settles.

So let me ask it about you, gently, and then let me sit down beside you while you answer.

I know what that word has cost you, and I am not going to hurry past it. It cost you the ordinary future you used to make plans inside without thinking about it. It cost you sleep, and then it cost you the honesty to tell anyone how little you are sleeping. It has you searching at one in the morning for a phrase you already know the meaning of, hoping the internet has changed its mind since the last time you looked. It has you telling people who love you that everything is fine, because the full answer takes forty minutes and their faces have gone tired before. And somewhere in the middle of all that, hoping started to feel dangerous. Because hoping is what you did before the appointment, and you remember exactly how far you fell.

That is not weakness. That is a person carrying an unreasonable load with no relief in the rota. I have watched strong people fold under less. You are not being assessed while you carry it. His Spirit already knows the exact weight of it at one in the morning, without the forty minute explanation, and Psalm 103:14 is written plainly enough: He remembers we are dust.

Here is what I want to put underneath you.

That word was a report on the material. It was never a rating on the Builder.

And there is an older word, spoken over that same body of yours, and it was not read out behind a shut door. It was said in the open, in front of witnesses, and it was written down so that you could find it thousands of years later at one in the morning when you needed it.

Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.Matthew 8:17

Read that again slowly, because Matthew is not being poetic. He is quoting Isaiah and applying it to Jesus on purpose, in the middle of an evening where sick people were being brought to Him in the street and were going home well. Took. Bare. Both past tense. Both finished. The weight was lifted off the material and put onto Someone who could carry it, and it was carried all the way to a cross and left there.

Which means the load path has already been redrawn. Not proposed. Redrawn.

Now, two things get in the way here, and I am going to name them both instead of arguing with you about either, because nobody was ever argued into healing.

The first is the quiet idea that this belonged to a particular century and the doors have since closed. But God did not hold an office He has since resigned from. Compassion is not a season He passed through. The same Jesus who touched people is not a historical figure who used to do that; He is alive, and mercy is what He is made of, and He has never once turned to someone who was hurting and told them the era for that had ended.

The second gets closer to the bone. You can believe it happens and still believe it happens somewhere else, to someone with a cleaner life, a stronger faith, a better week. I want to take that one apart with my hands.

God does not work at the level of populations. He works at the level of the one. The shepherd in the story did not run the numbers and conclude that ninety-nine was an acceptable result. He left the ninety-nine standing there and went out into the dark for one. Whatever you think of yourself this evening, you are the one He goes out for, and He is not weighing whether you have earned the walk. His Spirit does not hand anybody a percentage. Luke 15:4 has the shepherd leaving the ninety-nine standing in the wilderness and going out into the dark after one, and that was written down as a story about a person, never about a proportion.

And hear this next part carefully, because it matters more than anything else on this page. If you have prayed and nothing has shifted yet, that is not a verdict on your faith. It never was. It is our work to bring you into a place where you can receive, and it is never your fault that you have not yet. Nobody here is grading you. I am not going to hand a hurting person a bill for their own healing. Romans 8:26 is written for exactly this room: the Spirit helps our weakness and prays where the words have run out.

One more thing, and then we go on. Nothing in this message asks you to put down the care that God has placed into human hands. Keep the appointment. Take what has been put into your hands. Tell your doctor the truth. Skilled hands are one of the ways heaven has always reached bodies, and honoring them takes nothing away from what we are about to do.

The breakthrough

So here we are, in whatever room you are actually sitting in, and there is a word waiting to be said over your body. Not by the person with the folder. By you.

You have heard that other sentence hundreds of times. You have repeated it to family, to employers, to forms. You have said it so often that it has worn a groove. Tonight something older gets said out loud in the same voice, over the same body, and it goes on the record. That older word was written down in the open precisely so it could be read back in a kitchen two thousand years later. What gives it authority in the mouth of the person it was written for is the Holy Spirit, not the volume you manage.

This is not positive thinking. I have no interest in it. Positive thinking asks you to generate something out of yourself, and you are far too tired for that and it would not hold anyway. This is the opposite motion. You are not manufacturing anything. You are agreeing with what has already been finished and receiving what has already been paid for.

You do not have to feel anything. Feeling is weather. What is under your feet right now is climate, and it does not move when the weather does.

Just say it. Out loud, in your own voice, over your own body.

Declare this over yourself

A word was spoken over you behind a shut door. Now speak one over yourself, in a room you chose, out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so this is not a private opinion, it is an ambassador saying back what the King has already said. None of the weight rests on how well you say it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a spoken word carry rather than echo, and the centurion asked Him to speak the word only. Say it, and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Diagnosis, you were read to me and you do not get the last word over me. The Word of God says Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses, and what He bore I do not carry alone.
  2. Room with the door shut, you do not hold the last word, and I say so in the name of Jesus. The centurion said speak the word only, and the word spoken over me outranks the word spoken to me.
  3. Jesus, You took my infirmities and bore my sicknesses, and I say Your word over my own body today. I thank You, because You are not waiting on my paperwork to be Lord of my flesh.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
