Family & Loved Ones2 Timothy 2:13

The One Beside You Who Stopped Believing

This message is for the husband or wife beside you who says they do not believe any of it now

Twenty to nine on a Sunday, and there are two cups on the counter.

She still makes both. That is the part she has not been able to explain to anyone, including herself. She fills his the way he takes it, sets it on the left, near the window, where it has gone for nineteen years, and then she gets her coat.

He is not asleep. He is in the front room with the football preview on low and the sound of a man being careful. He says have a good one, love, and he means it, and that is somehow the worst of it, because there is no fight to have. Nothing is wrong between them. He is kind to her. He asks about the sermon sometimes and listens to the answer.

He simply does not believe it anymore.

He told her in the car after his brother's funeral, both of them still in their coats on the driveway, engine off. He was not angry and he was not cruel about it. He said he had been pretending for about four years, and that he did not want to keep saying words in a building that he did not think were true, and that he was sorry, and that he loved her.

She has replayed that driveway about a thousand times.

His Bible is still on the shelf in the hall. Cracked spine, his name in gold gone dull, a bus ticket somewhere in the middle. He has not thrown it out and she cannot decide whether that is a small mercy or a small cruelty.

So on Sundays she drives in alone and sits in a row where everyone knows and nobody asks, and she is fine right up until the moment in the singing when the room lifts, and she reaches sideways with the part of her that is not thinking, for a hand that has been on the other end of that reach since she was twenty three.

You know the reach.

Maybe yours is not a Sunday. Maybe it is grace at the table, or the moment the news is bad and you say let us pray and hear yourself say it into a silence. It is the specific loneliness of being married to somebody good, somebody you would choose again tomorrow, who no longer stands on the one thing that holds you up.

And you have made everything worse at least once. Everybody does. You left an article open on his side of the bed. You brought up something the pastor said and put a little too much weight on it. You had one conversation late at night that ended with both of you being colder than you meant, and after that you decided you would never do it again, and now you say nothing at all and the nothing has its own weight.

Under all of it is the question you carry to the car park and never say out loud. If God is real, and I am asking, and I have been asking for four years, why is the person nearest to me the one who is not being reached.

The One Beside You Who Stopped Believing

What He is like when nobody is holding on

I want to be careful with you, because there is a version of this message that would hand you a technique for changing your husband, and I am not going to write it. Nobody in Scripture was ever converted by a strategy operated on them by somebody who loved them. Your marriage will not survive being turned into a campaign, and you are already tired of feeling like his last remaining supporter. And the Spirit is not waiting on your technique. He has been in that front room every Sunday morning while the football preview murmured on low.

So let us not talk about him. Let us talk about God, which is a much better place to stand.

Paul is at the end of his life and he writes down a saying that the early believers evidently already sang, and it goes through the worst possibilities one by one. If we died with him, we will live with him. If we endure, we will reign with him. And then, in the middle, the line you need:

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13

Sit with the last clause, because it is the load-bearing one.

His faithfulness is not a response. It is not something he does when we do our part. It is what he is, in himself, all the way down. To stop being faithful he would have to stop being himself, and he cannot, and so he does not.

Now hear what that means in your house.

God's posture toward the man in your front room does not currently depend on the man in your front room. He has not withdrawn. He is not offended, waiting for an apology before he comes near again. He has not filed your husband under a different heading. The One who cannot deny himself is being exactly himself toward a man who has stopped believing he is there.

That is not a promise about what happens next. I want to say that plainly, because you have been handed enough promises that nobody had the authority to make, and I will not add to them. This verse does not give you a date. It does not tell you how the story ends. It does not hand you his will, and thank God for that, because a love that could be operated by remote control would not be love and you would not want it from him either.

What it gives you is much better than a prediction. It tells you what God is like right now, today, toward the person asleep beside you. Faithful. Unchanged. Not because your husband is holding on, but because God is, and because holding on is what he is. 2 Timothy 2:13 was written down long before either of you was born, and it did not expire on a driveway after a funeral, and His Spirit has not gone quiet in a house where only one person still prays.

And it takes something enormous off you. You are not his last chance. You were never the mechanism. You have been carrying a weight that was never assigned to you, quietly, for four years, and the weight has been making you strange with him.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn. You do not have to hold the door open for God. He is not outside your house waiting to be let in by your persuasiveness.

Which means you get to put down the two things that have been crushing you. You put down the responsibility for his soul, which was never yours and which you were never strong enough to carry, and you put down the daily audit of whether anything is changing. Neither of them was ever yours. The word nowhere makes one soul the property of the person who loves it best, and the Spirit of God has been working on that man in hours you were not even awake for.

And then you stand.

Not stand over him. Stand beside him, which is where you have always been, and where you actually want to be. You keep loving the man himself, not the version of him you are waiting for. You keep asking God for him, out loud, in the car, every week for as long as it takes, because asking is not campaigning and God has never once been tired of you bringing his name.

You are not losing. You are married to a man God has not walked away from, and you are held by a God who cannot stop being what he is, and neither of those depends on what happens next Sunday. That is not sentiment. It is written, and the Spirit of God carries it into the row where everybody knows and nobody asks, at the exact moment in the singing when you reach sideways.

Set the second cup out. Not as a signal, not as a hint. As a small, stubborn, unpushy declaration that you have not written anybody off, and neither has God.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud about yourself and about God, and not about what they ought to do. That is the line, and it is the guardrail. In Christ you have standing over the panic in you; the believing belongs between them and Him. Speak to the fear, love without conditions, and leave the outcome to Him. 2 Timothy 2:13 is the ground under your feet while you say them, and His Spirit reaches the front room without ever needing you to be persuasive.

  1. Words they said about not believing, you are not the end of their story. The Word of God says if we believe not, yet He abideth faithful, He cannot deny Himself.
  2. Panic in me, get out in the name of Jesus. God's faithfulness is not propped up by anybody's belief, and He abides faithful whether or not the person beside me does.
  3. Lord, You abide faithful and You cannot deny Yourself. I love the one beside me without conditions, and I leave the believing between them and You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
