Family & Loved OnesPsalm 121:3

The Friend Who Said They Cannot See a Reason

This message is for the friend who told you they cannot see a reason to stay

Twelve minutes past midnight, engine off, in a residents' bay outside a block of flats he has parked outside a hundred times.

The phone is face up on the passenger seat and the screen is still lit because he keeps touching it to stop it going dark. Two sentences sit at the bottom of the conversation. He has read them nine times. The first one is ordinary. The second one is the one where his friend said, plainly, without drama and without asking for anything, that he cannot see a reason to stay.

Third floor, second window from the left. The light is on.

He typed are you serious and deleted it. He typed I'm coming over and deleted that too, because he does not know if that is right, and there is nobody at midnight to ask. He does not know whether going up makes it worse. He does not know whether staying in the car makes him the person who sat outside.

What he keeps circling is the last time they spoke properly, three weeks ago, in the queue at a garden center, of all places, and he was talking about a work thing and his friend went quiet for a while, and he noticed it, and he did not ask.

That is the stone in his shoe now. He noticed and he did not ask.

He is a man who fixes things. It is what people say about him. And he has just discovered that he does not have a single tool for this, that all of it, every practical, capable thing about him, is standing outside a building at midnight with a lit phone and no idea what a person is supposed to type.

He looks up at the window again. The light is still on. It has been on the whole time.

And now I am going to stop saying he.

Because someone said it to you. Maybe in a message, maybe across a table, maybe half laughing so you could not tell. And ever since, you have been living in two places at once: the ordinary one where you have to answer emails and put the bins out, and this one, where you are running the sentence again and looking for what you should have seen.

You are frightened. You are out of your depth. And underneath both of those, you are carrying something you have not said to anyone: what if this is somehow on me.

The Friend Who Said They Cannot See a Reason

Ring the number tonight, and then hear the rest of this

Before anything else, and before any comfort, here is the practical part, because love is practical and this is the hour for it.

If you think your friend may be in danger right now, ring emergency services. In the United States and Canada that is 911. In the United Kingdom and much of Europe it is 999 or 112. Do not wait to be sure. Being wrong and embarrassed is a very small price, and it is a price you can afford.

If it is not that immediate but fear has hold of you anyway, there is a line for exactly this, and it is for you as well as for them. In the United States, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. They take calls from people worried about someone else, every day, and they will tell you what to say and what to do next. If your country is not on that list, search for its crisis line tonight and put the number in your phone before you need it. I do not know your local number, and I would rather say that plainly than have you take a guess from me.

And tell one more human being. Today. Someone who knows your friend, or someone who knows you. Not the whole world, not a broadcast, just one person, so that this is not yours alone to hold.

Now hear this, because it is the thing that stops people picking up the phone: calling for help is not a failure of faith. It is not a sign that you have run out of trust in God. It is not going behind His back. God has always worked through hands, through doors, through neighbors who came, through people who knew what to do and did it. Reaching for real help is what love looks like when love has a body. Anyone who tells you otherwise is asking you to gamble with a life that does not belong to either of you. Scripture never once set prayer against a neighbor's door. The Holy Spirit moves toward the phone at ten past midnight, never away from it.

Have you got the number? Good. Now let me tell you what you are actually carrying, because you have picked up two things and only one of them is yours.

He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.Psalm 121:3

Notice something about that psalm that people miss because they read it too fast.

It starts in the first person. I lift up my eyes. My help comes from the Lord. And then, at verse three, it turns. It stops saying I and starts saying you. From that line to the end of the psalm, it is one person speaking over another person. Somebody is standing beside somebody else, saying: He will not let your foot slip. He is not asleep over you.

That is what you are holding in your hands tonight. A psalm that a person says over their friend. It was written to be spoken rather than studied, and the Holy Spirit is what carries a sentence off a page and up to a third-floor window from a residents' bay.

And look at what it does and does not claim. It does not say the road is short. It does not say nothing hard is coming. It says the One keeping you does not sleep. Twice in that psalm it insists on it, as though the writer knew that the thing you need at midnight is not a forecast but a fact about who is awake.

You cannot be awake for them. You will fall asleep tonight, at some point, whether you mean to or not, and you will hate that. There is a Keeper who does not, and He is not taking a turn on the rota with you. He was there in that flat before you parked outside it.

And now the part I want you to hear most, so hear it slowly.

This is not on you.

Not the quiet in the garden center queue. Not the question you did not ask three weeks ago. Not the thing you said in April that you have been turning over since. What your friend is carrying is heavy and old and complicated, and it was not built by you and it does not run on your performance as a friend. You are not the load-bearing wall of another person's life. You were never given that job, and the fact that you have been trying to do it since midnight tells me exactly how much you love them. That is the verdict of the written word and not my reassurance, and His Spirit does not let it be argued down by the version of you that keeps replaying a queue in a garden center.

You can stand with someone without becoming responsible for their outcome. Those are different things, and the difference is the only reason anyone survives loving somebody through this.

The breakthrough

So put down the part that is not yours, and pick up the part that is.

What is not yours: the outcome. Their will. The years of whatever built this. The imaginary version of you who would have said the exact right thing in a garden center queue.

What is yours: to be present, to be honest, to keep the door open, and to bring in real human help tonight rather than carrying this like a secret. That is all of it. That is the whole job, and you can do it, and you are already doing it.

You are not their last line. There is a Keeper over that flat who does not sleep and does not blink and does not need you to hold the night together on your own. Stand under Him, not in front of Him. Psalm 121:3 says it twice because midnight needs it twice, and the Spirit of God is awake over that third-floor light whether you are parked outside it or asleep at home.

Ring the line. Tell one person. Go up, or go home and go again tomorrow. And let yourself be a friend rather than a wall.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud over your friend, by name. Then stay close, keep speaking life, and get them to the help that exists, because prayer has never been an alternative to picking up the phone. In Christ you have standing to speak; you do not have authority over their will. Leave the outcome to Him, and He does not sleep. None of this rests on your nerve: the standing is written, and His Spirit carries your friend's name further tonight than your voice could reach from a residents' bay.

  1. Words my friend said, you are heard and you are not the last word. The Word of God says He that keepeth thee will not slumber, and He does not suffer thy foot to be moved.
  2. Helplessness, get out in the name of Jesus. I am not their Keeper and God is, and He does not sleep over the ones I am afraid for.
  3. Lord, You keep my friend and You never sleep. I stay close and I keep speaking life, and I get them to the help that is there.
