Family & Loved OnesLuke 15:20

The Father Ran While He Was Still Far Off

This message is for the son or daughter who is still a long way off

She still buys the cereal.

Nobody in that house eats it. It sits on the second shelf where it has always sat, and every few months it goes out of date and she puts it in the bin and buys another box on the same shop run, and she has never once said out loud why. It costs almost nothing. It is the cheapest thing in the trolley. It is also the most expensive thing she does all week.

There are other habits. The porch light, which she leaves on now even in summer. The spare key, still where it always was, under the second pot, because what if. The way she checks her phone first thing, before the kettle, before anything, and the small drop in her chest when there is nothing.

Two Christmases now. Fourteen months since a proper conversation, if you can count the one that ended the way it ended. She has apologized for things she did and for two things she did not do, and she has stopped sending those messages because they were starting to feel like pressure, and pressure is the one thing that pushes him further out.

So she keeps the light on and buys the cereal and says almost nothing to anybody, because after a while people stop asking, and when they do ask she can hear herself giving the short answer.

You know this. That is why you are still reading.

You are carrying somebody. Not a situation of your own, a person, and it is the particular exhaustion of a love that has nowhere to put itself down. You would take the whole thing off them and put it on yourself right now if there were a way to do that, and there is not, and that is the wound underneath all the others. You have run out of things to try. Every conversation is a door you might close for good. So you keep small habits alive in an empty room and you tell yourself it is not much, and I want to tell you what it actually is.

It is a road being watched. And you are not the only one watching it.

The Father Ran While He Was Still Far Off

Someone else is already on that road

First let me say the true thing about the weight, because people keep trying to make it lighter than it is.

This is heavier than carrying something for yourself. When it is your own trouble, at least you have a say in it. This one you cannot fix by being stronger, praying earlier, or trying harder, because it is happening inside a person who has their own will and their own life and their own reasons, and no amount of your love reaches inside another human being and turns something.

And it has probably come with a private accusation. The night list. What you missed. What you said in the year everything was hard. The version of you they got compared to the version of you their brother or sister got. Let me tell you plainly, as someone who is not going to flatter you and has no interest in scolding you either: a person's road is not the sum of their parent's mistakes. You are not that powerful, and neither is anyone else's mother or father. Your child is a whole person, walking a road with their own feet, and the story is not finished. That is not me being soft with you. Scripture is full of people whose story turned long after everybody had stopped expecting it to, and the Spirit of God has never once read your night list back to you at four in the morning. He did not write it.

Now open the door of the most famous story Jesus ever told, and look at what the father is doing when the son first appears.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him.Luke 15:20

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him.

Stop there for a second. He saw him from a distance. Do you know what that means? It means he was looking. Not that morning. Every morning. You do not spot a figure on the horizon unless you have made a habit out of the horizon, and that is what the father had been doing the entire time the son was gone. All those months of nothing, the father was out at the end of the road looking at the place where it bends out of sight. Luke 15 gives one verb to all those empty months, and the verb is saw. His Spirit has been holding your own eyes on that same bend, which is why the porch light is still on in the middle of summer.

And when he saw him, an elderly man in that culture, a man with standing, did the least dignified thing available to him. He hitched up his robe and ran. In front of the whole village. Toward a son who was returning in disgrace with nothing to show, who had not yet said one word of the speech he had rehearsed on the way. The father did not wait on the porch to see whether the apology was any good. He was already moving.

Notice the order. Compassion, then running, then the embrace, and only after all that does the son get any of his prepared sentence out, and the father talks over most of it.

But here is the part I need you to hold, because it is where your hope and your guardrail live in the same sentence.

The father watched the road. The father did not go to the far country and drag the boy home.

He could not, and neither can you, and that is not a failure of love, it is the shape of love when it is aimed at a person rather than a problem. Nobody comes home in handcuffs. The road has to be walked from their side. What the father did, faithfully, for as long as it took, was keep the house a place worth coming back to and keep his eyes on the bend.

That is your assignment, and it is enough, and you have been doing it with a box of cereal. That assignment is written into the story Jesus told about His own Father, and the Spirit is the reason a box on the second shelf is intercession and not just a habit you cannot explain.

And now the other conviction, the one you need for the hours when the road stays empty.

You may have quietly decided that your child has gone somewhere out of reach. Not out of God's ability in theory, but out of practical range. Too far now, too long now, too much said now. So hear what David wrote about the geography of the far country: If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me.

There is no address outside His reach. Not the flat you have never seen. Not the phone that stays quiet. Not the country, the crowd, the habit, the anger. God is not waiting at your porch for news. He is out on that road, in the dark, further along it than you have ever been able to walk, and He was there before you started praying. Psalm 139 was written down for somebody standing exactly where you are standing, and His Spirit is at the far end of that road tonight, doing what no message from you was ever going to do.

You are not the only one keeping watch. You are the second one.

There is one more detail in that story that I think was put there for you specifically, and almost nobody notices it.

The son does not come to his senses in the father's house. He comes to his senses in a field, at the lowest point of the whole account, hungry, filthy, working a job no Jewish boy should ever have been doing, and the text says he came to himself. Nobody preached at him. No letter arrived. No relative tracked him down to deliver a word. Something woke up in him a long way from home, in a place his father could not see and had no control over whatsoever.

That is the part I want you to sleep on tonight. God works in the field. He works in the places you are not allowed into, in the hours you do not know about, in conversations you were not part of, and He is entirely unhindered by your absence from the room. The distance that torments you is not an obstacle to Him. It is simply where He is working at the moment.

So when you have said everything you know how to say and it has all been said, you have not run out of options. You have arrived at the part that was always His. Nowhere in Scripture is the field out of bounds to Him, and it is His Spirit at work in it, in hours nobody is ever going to tell you about.

The breakthrough

So set the weight down where it belongs.

Not down as in giving up. Down as in transferred. You have been carrying a person on shoulders that were never built for the load, and tonight the watch changes hands. You keep the light on, you keep the door open, you keep the love unconditional and the pressure off, and you hand the road itself to the Father who has been running toward the lost since the beginning of the world. That handover is not a feeling you have to manufacture. It is written into the story He told about Himself, and His Spirit takes the weight the moment it leaves your mouth.

You are not going to talk them home. You are going to be a house they can come back to, and let God do what only He can do inside a person.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud with the light still on. That father saw his son while he was yet a great way off, which means he had been looking at an empty road a long time. In Christ you have standing to speak to the fear, never to command a return. Bless them, and however He answers, He is already moving. The lines below are only Luke 15:20 said back, and it is His Spirit who takes them further down that road than your voice goes.

  1. Distance my son has gone, you are not too far for the Father to run. The Word of God says when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran.
  2. Fear that they are past coming back, get out in the name of Jesus. That father ran while his boy was still a long way off, and God has never once waited to be convinced.
  3. Lord, You see them a great way off and You are already moving. I stop measuring the distance, because You are the One who closes it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
