Family & Loved OnesIsaiah 54:13

He Loves Them More Than You Do

This message is for the person you love more than they will let you show

He still sets the extra place. Not every night. On the nights when something in him will not let him do otherwise, which turns out to be most Sundays.

Plate, fork, the glass from the back of the cupboard, the one with the chip on the rim that nobody else is allowed to use. It takes eleven seconds. His wife has stopped commenting on it, not because she disapproves but because there is nothing left to say that has not been said in a kitchen at some point over the last four years.

He knows how this looks. He has heard himself explain it to a friend and heard how it sounded coming out. He is not confused. He is not waiting by the window. He does the shopping, he laughs at things, he is fine, mostly. It is only that at a certain moment in the evening his hands go to the cupboard and take down four plates, and he has decided to let them.

Once a fortnight there is a message. Sometimes it is a single word. He reads it eleven times looking for temperature in it, then writes back something warm and short, and then spends twenty minutes deleting the parts that would be too much, because too much is what closed the door the last time.

You know that plate. Maybe yours is a chair, or a birthday card you buy and do not post, or a name you have stopped saying at the table because of how the room goes when you say it. So sit down here with me, in the light, with the food going cold. I am not going to tell you how this ends. I want to tell you where all that love has been going.

He Loves Them More Than You Do

Where your reach ends is not where His does

Say the honest thing first, and then we will go up together.

The hardest part of loving someone who will not let you show it is not the missing. It is the constant, exhausting editing. Every message you send is drafted four times. You take out the question that would sound like pressure. You take out the memory that would sound like guilt. You take out the I love you, or you leave it in and then stare at the screen for an hour. You have become a diplomat in your own family and you never applied for the post.

And then there is the inventory you take at three in the morning, going back through the years looking for the moment it turned. You have found nineteen possible ones. You have apologized for some of them, into silence. You have replayed a sentence you said in a car in a year that no longer matters, and you cannot put it down. So let it be lifted off you here: you are not the hinge that life turned on, and you never were. The teaching of your children was handed to the LORD Himself in Isaiah 54:13. On every one of the nights you spent auditing yourself at three in the morning, the Spirit was at work in them.

And underneath, the thing you have not said to anyone, because it is not respectable: you are angry. You love them and you are angry, both at once, and the anger makes you feel like a bad parent or a bad friend or a bad sibling, so you keep it under something. Let me say plainly that two weathers at once is not a failure of love. It is what love does when it has nowhere to land. You are allowed to feel both, in the same hour, without one of them canceling the other.

I am not going to tell you that they are coming back. I do not know that, nobody knows that, and anybody who promises it to you is promising something that is not theirs to give. What I can tell you is what is true regardless of what they do next, and it is the only thing that has ever actually held anyone in this position.

There is a promise given to a woman in Isaiah who had been left desolate, given to her about children, and it does not say what you might expect.

All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.Isaiah 54:13

Taught by the LORD. Not taught by you. And that is not a demotion, it is the release you have been trying to give yourself for four years and have not managed, because you cannot hand a thing over to nobody. You have been carrying a job you were never given: being the only voice that could reach them. You are not their teacher of last resort. There is Somebody with access you do not have, who does not need permission, who is not blocked, whose messages do not arrive at a bad moment, and who has been at work in that life every single day that you were not allowed near it. That is not a comfort I invented to soften the four years. That is the Spirit's ordinary work, and it has never once required a door to be open first.

Look at how the father does it in the story Jesus told, because the details are astonishing and people rush past them.

The son asks for his share and leaves. The father lets him go. He does not follow him, does not send a servant to argue, does not use the leverage he certainly had. He lets a person he loves walk out of the house with his own money, into a decision he knows will hurt him.

And then, later, the line that undoes me every time: while he was still a long way off, his father saw him. Which means the father was looking. All that time, at a distance, without contacting him, without controlling him, without a single guarantee, he was looking. And when he saw him he ran, which was not a dignified thing for a man of his age and standing to do, and he did not care.

That is the whole shape of it. He did not control the outcome and he did not stop loving. Those are not opposites, though everything in you says they are.

Two convictions have to move here, and I will move them both gently.

The first is a suspicion that God does not really involve Himself in this sort of thing any more. That He parted seas and now leaves families to their own devices. But the reaching into a closed life is His signature work, and He is doing it tonight, in ordinary ways nobody will attribute to Him: through a stranger's kindness at exactly the right hour, through a song in a car, through something that will not leave them alone at four in the morning. That is the Holy Spirit doing exactly what Scripture says He does, going where no message of yours is permitted to go. You are not the only one working on this. You are simply the only one you can see.

The second is closer to the bone. You believe He works in families. You are not sure He is doing anything at all in yours, because you have prayed about this for years and the plate is still empty, and something in you has quietly concluded that either He is not listening or you are not being heard properly.

So hear this, and hear it as from someone kneeling down beside you and not standing over you. The silence is not the verdict. Nothing about this is a judgement on how you prayed, or how much faith you managed on the bad years, or whether you said the right words. You have not failed a test. The delay is not a message about you, and I will not let anyone tell you it is. The Spirit did not go quiet just because the room did, and what is written stands over that house whatever the plate looks like this Sunday.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not a technique for getting them back. It is the laying down of something you were never built to carry.

You have been trying to be their salvation. Not out of arrogance, out of love, and because you were the one who was there. And it is crushing you, because it is a weight sized for God. Nowhere in Scripture was that weight handed to you, and the Spirit who does carry it has been carrying it the whole time, without ever needing you to hold the other end.

Put them into hands bigger than yours. Not letting go of them, never that. Letting go of the outcome, which was never yours in the first place. There is a difference and your whole body knows it.

And keep loving them the way the father did: with the door open, without conditions, without leverage, without a running total. If your love has nowhere to land at the moment, it does not evaporate. It goes upward. Every unsent message and every set plate becomes intercession, and intercession is not love wasted. It is love delivered by another route.

You do not stop setting the plate. You simply stop believing you are the only one who has ever thought of them today. Somebody else was thinking of them at four this morning. It reaches them in rooms you have never seen, carried by the Spirit, and Isaiah 54:13 calls it peace, and great peace.

Declare this over yourself

Say them over somebody who will not let you show them very much, out loud, by name, in an empty room if that is the only room available. In Christ you may speak across a wall you are not allowed past. Speak to the helplessness, bless the person, and the outcome is His, who teaches them directly. The wall is not an obstacle to the word you are about to speak. It was written for a woman with an empty house. Past every place you are not allowed to go, the Spirit carries it.

  1. Helplessness at how little they will let me show, get out. The Word of God says all thy children shall be taught of the Lord, and great shall be the peace of thy children.
  2. Fear that my love is not reaching, you are outranked in the name of Jesus. God teaches directly, and He needs neither my permission nor their invitation to begin.
  3. Lord, You love them more than I do, and that is the best news in this whole situation. I keep loving them my way and I trust You with Yours.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
