Money & Provision2 Corinthians 9:8

The Provision You Cannot Budget Into Being

This message is for the gap no budget you have written can close

One in the morning, and the mug beside her had gone cold two hours ago without her noticing it happen.

She was adding it up again. The notebook had columns in it, ruled with the edge of an envelope because she could not find a ruler and would not go looking for one at that hour. She had moved one figure out of one column and into another, and then moved it back. She had crossed out the food line and written a smaller one over it, the way you do when you are negotiating with yourself. She had thought about the shoes her daughter needs and decided that they can wait until they cannot wait anymore.

And the number at the bottom came out exactly as it had come out on every previous run through the page, because numbers are honest and they do not care what time it is.

She is not careless. That is the part that would break your heart if you were standing in the doorway. She is one of the most careful people you will ever meet. She knows what everything costs, to the coin. She has not bought anything for herself since spring. She works, and then she works the other job, and she is doing all of it with a competence that nobody in her life has ever thanked her for, and at one in the morning at a kitchen table she is sitting in front of a page that will not balance, and the feeling in her chest is not panic. It is shame. Because somewhere she picked up the idea that an adult who cannot make the numbers work has failed at being an adult.

You know the number. You did not have to look it up. It has been sitting behind your eyes for weeks, and you could say it out loud this second, and there is a date attached to it, and the date is coming.

The Provision You Cannot Budget Into Being

You are not bad at arithmetic

Let me start by saying the thing nobody has said to you, and it is not mine to soften. 2 Corinthians 9:8 was written to people who were short, and it is His Spirit who stops it reading like a sentence about somebody with more room in their month than you have in yours.

You have not mismanaged this. I do not know your whole story, but I know what a person looks like who has done the page four times, and it is not the look of someone who has been reckless. The page is not the problem. You have already squeezed everything a page can be squeezed of. There is no clever column left. The gap is not there because you were foolish. It is there because the gap is larger than the page.

And I want to name what it is doing to you, because the shortfall is only half of it.

It is stealing your sleep, and it is stealing it in the specific, awful way where you fall asleep fine and then come awake at four with the whole thing already running. It is making you short with people you love, and then you lie there afterward feeling like a bad person on top of everything else. It is making you dread perfectly ordinary things: a school letter, a phone call from an unknown number, a friend suggesting somewhere for lunch. It has made you a liar in small ways, saying you are not hungry, saying you have already eaten, saying you would rather stay in. And it has made you very, very quiet, because the last thing you can bear right now is anybody's pity or anybody's advice.

Hear me, and hear the whole sentence. Your bank balance is not a report card on your walk with God. There is nothing in Scripture that lets anyone read a person's standing with heaven off the bottom of a page, and every honest reading of the Bible has faithful people in tight seasons and unfaithful people with plenty. If somebody ever suggested to you that the gap is a measure of your faith, that word did not come from God, and you may set it down tonight and never pick it up again. The Holy Spirit has never once used a bank balance to tell somebody where they stand with heaven, and He is not starting at your kitchen table.

Now look at what Paul actually wrote.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.2 Corinthians 9:8

The load bearing word is able. It is written in the present tense, about God and not about you, and by His Spirit a present tense that old comes down onto a page ruled with the edge of an envelope.

You have spent weeks on the question of whether it is possible. That is what the four passes at the page were. You were trying to establish possibility, because you have been treating your own arithmetic as the boundary of what can happen. And Paul does not argue with your arithmetic at all. He simply says that the ability in question is not yours and never was. God is able. Your page is a description of your resources. It was never a description of his.

And notice the strange, generous phrasing. Not sufficiency in some things. All sufficiency in all things. Enough, in the whole of it, at the same time.

I want to take you somewhere older, because this is where I live and I would like you to stand here with me for a moment. There was a whole people in a desert with no fields, no market and no supply line of any kind, and every morning there was bread on the ground. It could not be manufactured. It could not be stockpiled, and the ones who tried found it spoiled by the next day. It simply arrived, daily, in a place where the arithmetic said nothing could arrive, from a direction nobody could point to.

That is the thing your page cannot contain. Provision is not the last column of a budget. It is the habit of a Person, and he has been feeding people off the edge of the map since the beginning, and he is not embarrassed by how short you are.

Notice how it came, as well, because this is where people get discouraged. It did not come as a year's supply on the first morning. It came as today, and then it came again. If you have been waiting for the whole gap to be answered in one movement before you will believe anything is happening, you may be standing right in the middle of an answer and calling it nothing, because it arrived in the size of a day. Watch for what turns up small. A shift nobody expected to be offered. A bill that was wrong. A neighbor at the door with too much food and an unconvincing reason. Heaven has a long history of arriving through the side entrance, and I do not want you to miss it because you were watching the front. That daily size is written into the manna on purpose, and His Spirit is what teaches a person to recognize an answer that arrives one morning at a time.

And this is not an ancient story about somebody else. The God who put bread on the ground in a wilderness is not a historical arrangement that has since been discontinued. He is not restricted to the channels you can see, and your visibility is not his limit. He is able today, in your currency, on your timeline, in your kitchen.

The breakthrough

So bring him the page.

Not a tidied version of it. The real one, with the crossings out and the smaller number written over the bigger one and the food line you edited at midnight. He is not going to be shocked, and he is not going to comment on your handwriting.

Something is shifting in this room right now, and I want you to notice what it is, because it is not the total on the page. It is the load. You came into this article carrying the gap as though closing it were your job and yours alone, and that is the weight that has been crushing you, more than the shortfall itself. That job was never yours. You are permitted to keep working, keep asking, keep being as wise as you have been, and to stop being the one responsible for the miracle. 2 Corinthians 9:8 puts the ability in God's column and leaves it there, and His Spirit lifts weight off a person rather than adding a duty to the page.

I am not going to hand you a promised date, and I would not insult you with one. I have sat with too many people at too many tables to talk that way, and the God I serve does not need me to overstate him. What I can tell you without a flicker of doubt is that he is able, that he is not distant from this, and that he has never in the history of the world regarded a person's shortfall as beneath his attention. The waiting is real, and you are not waiting by yourself, and the one sitting with you is not sitting there empty handed.

And do one more thing that has nothing to do with figures. Tell one trustworthy human being the truth this week. Not because they can fix it. Because carrying this in silence is doing more damage to you than the number is, and God very often moves through people who were simply told.

Declare this over yourself

Say them after you have done the sums honestly and got the same answer for the fourth time, not instead of the sums. In Christ you have standing to speak to a gap arithmetic cannot close. Say unto this mountain, remove hence, and however He answers, God is able and His ability is not limited to your spreadsheet. The authority is 2 Corinthians 9:8 and none of it is mine, and the Spirit of God is what carries three spoken lines off a kitchen table at one in the morning.

  1. Gap that no budget of mine can close, you are not a gap in God. The Word of God says God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that ye always having all sufficiency in all things may abound to every good work.
  2. Despair at the arithmetic, get out in the name of Jesus. All grace, all sufficiency, all things, always, is four alls inside one verse, and God wrote every one of them.
  3. Lord, You are able, and Your ability is not limited to my spreadsheet. I do my sums honestly and I trust the God who is able.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
