Nothing You Owe Him Buys This

God, I know I have no right to ask You this, but.

That is where it stops. Every single time, at that same comma, like the sentence hits a wall it built itself. He sits at the kitchen table with the lamp on and the rest of the house asleep, and he cannot get past but.

The envelopes are in a stack at the edge of the table, pushed there earlier so he could eat, and never moved back. Two of them he has not opened. He knows roughly what they say and roughly is enough. The hours got cut in March and never came back, and the maths that used to work with twelve pounds of room in it now works with nothing in it, and last week it stopped working altogether.

And here is what is actually stopping the prayer, and it is not the money.

It is the ledger in his head. The months he was not in church. The prayer he prayed the last time it got bad, the one where he made a promise about what he would do differently if God got him out of it, and God did, and he did not. The giving he stopped. The temper. The thing from years ago that still gets up and walks around the room whenever he tries to talk to God about anything serious. It all adds up to one clear conclusion, and he has never once questioned the arithmetic.

I am behind with Him. People who are behind do not get to ask.

So he says but, and then he sits there, and then he goes to bed.

Come here, you. I have been waiting for you all evening.

You have a need with a date on it and you have not properly asked, because somewhere in you is a running account, and you believe you are in arrears, and you have quietly decided that people in arrears have to catch up before they are allowed to open their mouths.

Let me take that whole ledger off the table before we go a step further.

There is no account, so there are no arrears

The low part first, because you have been alone in it and I am not walking past it.

Money trouble is uniquely humiliating in a way people who have never had it do not understand. It is not just arithmetic. It is standing in a shop doing sums in your head. It is the particular way your stomach moves when the phone rings with a number you do not recognize. It is your children asking for something ordinary and you making your face do a normal expression while you say not this week. It is the tiredness of running a household on a number that does not reach, and doing it with a smile on, and telling everybody you are fine. None of that is hidden. The Spirit of God has been at that shop counter doing the same sums with you, and Isaiah 58:11 was written about scorched places for a reason.

And then on top of all that, the religious weight: the sense that this is somehow deserved. That if you had been better, more faithful, more disciplined, more grateful, you would not be sitting at this table with two envelopes you have not opened.

I want to be very clear, and I am not softening it. Your shortfall is not a bill God is presenting you with. He is not withholding to teach you a lesson about the months you were not in church. That is not who He is, and if you have been carrying that, you can put it down tonight and never pick it up again. That is not me being kind. It is what is written, and His Spirit does not agree with the voice that has been reading your file back to you.

Now the thing I actually came to say, and it is structural, and it changes everything if you see it.

You are treating your relationship with God as an account with a balance. Debits on one side, credits on the other, and access to Him depending on where the total sits. And that is a completely reasonable way to understand every other relationship you have with anybody who holds anything you need. It just happens to be the one arrangement Jesus came to abolish.

There is no account. Which means there are no arrears. That is not my accounting. It is written into the gospel itself, and the Spirit speaks straight across the balance without reading it.

You are trying to be current on a payment plan for something that was never for sale. Nothing you owe Him buys this, and here is the other half, which is the half you need tonight: nothing you owe Him blocks it either. You cannot fall behind on grace. There is no minimum standing. There is no eligibility check at the start of a prayer.

Jesus told a story about two men praying in the temple. One had his record in good order and he said so, out loud, in detail. The other stood a long way off, could not lift his eyes, beat his chest, and got out eight words: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. No plan, no promises, no proposal for how he intended to make it right. Just the debt, named, and a request.

And Jesus said it was that man who went home justified.

Read that again, slowly, because it is your whole situation. The man who was behind is the one who got heard. Not despite the honesty about the debt. Through it.

And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.Isaiah 58:11

I love that God picked a garden for this, because a garden is the most honest picture of provision there is.

A garden does not produce its own water. It cannot. It has no mechanism for rain and no way to pay for any. What a garden does is receive, and the whole of its life comes from outside itself, and this is not shameful, it is simply what a garden is. Notice every verb in the verse belongs to Him. He guides. He satisfies. He strengthens. You are the ground. Rain is not something ground negotiates. Isaiah 58:11 hands every verb to God, and the Spirit is the water, never the invoice.

And He does not water the deserving squares and skip the rest. That is not how rain has ever worked.

Which brings me to the second thing, and it is the personal one, and I know you have been holding it at arm's length the whole way down this page. You believe God provides. You have watched Him do it for other people and you were genuinely glad. You just do not quite believe it is coming to this address, because you know your file. Your file is not the document in question. Isaiah 58:11 is, and His Spirit brought it to this address tonight and not to a tidier one.

So listen to how Jesus argued it, because He did not argue upward from your worthiness. He argued downward from the Father's character. If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him. Look at what He assumed about the parent in that comparison. Not that the child had earned it. Not that the child was current on anything. Only that the child asked, and that a father is a father.

You are not petitioning a creditor. You are asking a Father, and He has never once checked a balance before answering a child. That is written down. The Spirit does the rest, which is the part where you actually open your mouth.

And notice how He taught us to ask for it. Give us this day our daily bread. Daily. Not the year's supply, not the guarantee, not the number in the account that would finally let you sleep. Bread for today, asked for today, by people who would have to come back tomorrow and ask again.

I used to think that was a small prayer. It is not small. It is the prayer of a people who were fed in a desert for forty years by a bread that arrived every morning and would not keep overnight, so that every single day of their lives they had to look up. That is not God being stingy. That is God refusing to let the relationship become an arrangement, because He did not want them fed and gone. He wanted them fed and near.

So if what you have tonight is enough for tonight and nothing beyond it, you have not been overlooked. You are being kept close. And you are allowed to say tomorrow's number out loud anyway, because a Father would much rather hear the whole worry than the polite version of it. Manna is in the written record as bread that would not keep, and His Spirit has never once treated a daily supply as a downgrade.
