The Bread Is Daily on Purpose

This message is for the week you can already see the end of the food from

Four eggs. Half a loaf, the end nobody likes. Rice, most of a bag. Two tins, one of them beans. A bit of cheese wrapped in foil, going hard at the edge.

She has counted it three times, which is two times more than counting requires, and she is doing the thing she does every Sunday evening now, which is running the week backwards from what is in the house. Eggs stretch. Rice stretches further. If she does the beans on Tuesday and does not eat properly herself on Wednesday, and if the school does breakfast, then it reaches Thursday.

Thursday is not the end of the week.

She closes the fridge and the little light goes off and she stands in the dark kitchen with her hand still on the handle. In the next room somebody is laughing at something on a screen, that unguarded, snorting laugh a child does when they have forgotten to be self conscious, and it goes through her like a blade, because they do not know. That is the whole job now. Making sure they do not know. She has got very good at a particular face, the one she puts on before she walks back in there, and she puts it on now, and she goes in and asks who wants tea.

She has not told anyone. Not her sister, not the woman at church who asks how she is doing and means it. Because saying it out loud makes it real, and because underneath the arithmetic there is a sentence she cannot get out of her head, and the sentence is: everyone else seems to manage.

You can see the end of the food from where you are standing.

That is the difference between a hard week and this week. You are not worried about something that might happen. You have done the sums, and you know the day it runs out, and you have been carrying that day around in your chest since Sunday like a stone in a coat pocket.

The Bread Is Daily on Purpose

He gave a morning, not a storehouse

I want to take one thing off you before I say anything else, and I want to take it off completely, because it is the heaviest item on you and it is not even yours.

Being short is not a verdict on you. Not on your character, not on your effort, not on your faith, not on whether God is pleased with you. There are hardworking, generous, praying people in every city on earth who can see the end of the food from Sunday. Whatever anyone has implied to you, in a sermon or a family or a room, about how people who really trust God do not end up here, that was not the gospel and it was not true and I would like it out of your kitchen.

And now let me show you something about how God feeds people, because He has a pattern, and once you see it you will stop reading your week as abandonment.

He fed a nation in a desert for forty years, and He did it one day at a time on purpose.

Manna came in the morning. Enough for that day. They were told to gather what they needed for the day, and when some of them kept it overnight anyway, because who would not, it bred worms and spoiled. He was not being harsh. He was refusing to be replaced by a pantry. A full storehouse would have let them stop looking up by the second week, and He wanted them to have Himself and not merely His supplies.

Now count what that actually cost Him. Forty years is something like fourteen thousand six hundred mornings, and He did not miss one. Not the mornings they complained. Not the mornings they were sure it would not come. Not the morning after the golden calf. Every single day, before they woke, it was already on the ground.

That is the God who is arranging your Thursday.

Give us this day our daily bread.Matthew 6:11

Jesus taught us to ask like that, and He taught it right after saying that your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask Him. So the asking is not information. He already knows about the four eggs. He knew before you counted them the first time. The asking is contact. It is a child putting a hand up at a table where the food is already coming.

And here is the second thing that has to shift, because I know exactly where you are stuck. Matthew 6:11 was written in the plural and handed to ordinary people at ordinary tables. The Spirit does not thin out on the way to one particular kitchen.

You believe God provides. You have seen Him do it for other people and you were genuinely glad. What you cannot make yourself believe is that He is leaning toward your specific kitchen, this week, with your name and your children's names in His mouth. That is not a doctrinal problem. It is what happens to a person who has been coping alone for a long time. When you carry something without help for long enough, you slowly stop expecting help to be for you.

So hear it as directly as I can say it. This one is yours. Not the general truth, yours. He is not distributing at a distance. He is near you, in that kitchen, at the hour when the house is quiet and the arithmetic starts.

And let me name the rest of what you are carrying, since we are being honest and nobody else has said it to you out loud.

It is not only the food. It is the birthday coming, and what you are going to do about it. It is the school trip letter in the bag that you have not signed. It is the tiredness of thinking about the same six things in the same order all day while you are also being pleasant to people. It is the way a short week eats your attention until there is very little of you left over for anyone, and then the guilt about that, which arrives right on time. And it is the particular loneliness of holding a face together for children who must not find out, which is a job with no shift and no relief and no one to hand it to at ten at night. There is Someone to hand it to. The Spirit is awake in that kitchen at ten at night, and Matthew 6:11 was given to be said at exactly that hour.

I am not going to be brisk with any of that. It is heavy, and you have been strong in it far longer than anybody noticed, and being strong for that long leaves marks even when it works.

But strength was never what was holding your house up. He was. Through every short week you have already survived, including the ones you cannot explain and stopped mentioning, He was the reason there was a Friday at all. That is not sentiment. It is written into the way He fed a desert, and the same Spirit who kept fourteen thousand six hundred mornings without missing one has been keeping yours.

The breakthrough

So put the stone down. Right now, before the day starts, hand Him the day you have been carrying around in your chest.

You are not going to see next month tonight, and He has not asked you to. He has asked you for today, and today He has. Daily bread is not a smaller promise than a full pantry. It is a closer one. It means He is turning up at your house every single morning, which is a great deal more intimate than being sent a supply and left to it. Matthew 6:11 put the word daily in on purpose, and the Spirit does not deliver at a distance. He comes with what He brings.

And one more thing, and I say it as somebody who loves you enough to be blunt. Tell one person this week. Your sister, the woman at church who asks and means it, the pastor, the neighbor who keeps offering. God feeds people through people, and He always has, and the whole arrangement runs on somebody being willing to say the true thing out loud. It is not weakness and it is not failure. There is help in your town, and there are hands that would be glad, and letting them is part of how the bread arrives. Nothing is being asked of you first. There is no cost to standing in this, and there never was.

You are not a scrounger. You are a person in a short week, and you are being carried. Nothing written anywhere in the word makes that a shameful sentence, and the Spirit is not embarrassed to be seen carrying somebody into a Thursday.

Declare this over yourself

Say them about today. Only today. Jesus put daily into the prayer deliberately, and a week you can see the end of is exactly what He put it there for. In Christ you may ask as a child rather than a beggar. The lines are not strong because I wrote them well: Matthew 6:11 is underneath them, and the Spirit came into this kitchen before you did. Speak, and His timing is His own.

  1. End of the food I can already see, you are not the end of God. The Word of God says give us this day our daily bread, and Jesus made the bread daily on purpose.
  2. Fear of the empty cupboard, get out in the name of Jesus. Daily is not a shortage, it is an appointment, and God keeps it every single day.
  3. Father, You give bread this day, and this day is the one I am standing in. I ask You for today and I let You hold the rest of the week.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
